One of the things that I never see enough of these days are tag-team sets. Lots of people do ridiculous sets, ostentatious work on the decks that gets the attention of the crowd, others do fun technical stuff like scratching, using 12 cdjs/turntables at the same time, and still more just press play and don’t do a damn thing. My favorite is when two people, friends or rivals, play back-to-back or tag-team. Two DJs doing some amazing work, watching each other’s backs and surprising each other with awesome tunes, sick transitions and surprises that you only get with two cooks in the kitchen. It seems the party Gods have heard my prayers, because next Friday, Entwined & Blackbird is coming together to throw one of the more creative events I’ve heard of in some time.
While the tag-team theme is done by many, I think this is the first event that’s happening with a series of match-ups tagged by BPM.. Additionally, there will be a place for massage/healing, transformational body painting, VJ Visuals by DoctorMoJo and a crapload of excellent talent. This in addition to EZ Almighty coming up all the way from Philly to bartend, it’s shaping up to be an event not to be missed. And I’ve gotta give it up to them, because the way they’ve set up the party, I can actually yell IN THE RED CORNER when it comes to listing off the DJ hotness without feeling like a tard. So then, IN THE RED CORNER:
EpicCloud Strife has made a name for himself at some of the Glow & Vinyl Fantasy parties thrown by NYCRavers, and this is one of the first times I’ve seen him on a burner bill. Seems he’s come a long way and I can’t wait to hear what he brings. DJ B3ar is one of those undiscovered gems in the scene and needs as much exposure and decks time as possible. His techy, groovy blend of house and deep bass is sure to get people swinging. DJ Shakey & Barney Iller are the King & Queen of beats and bass here in NYC. Barney’s encyclopedic knowledge of rhythms, hooks, samples and vocals is matched by Shakey’s record collection, which I hear is actually OVER NINE THOUSAND (Sorry, I don’t get to say that unironically very often). Elixir managed to close out GlamTech with a fun set and some really good track choices so he should be quite fun. Kanizzle first pushed into my mind when I saw him on the lineup for the 2012 Battleship party down in Philadelphia. Yes, in Philly they have parties on battleships but that’s a story for another time. His selection of dubstep, ghetto bass, drumstep and general massive beats should do quite nicely as this room’s heavy hitter.
IN THE BLUE CORNER! (This is way too much fun)
Orange Krush is at the helm for this event, not only dropping ridiculous beats but also keeping the art tight and the people flowing. She’s been spinning some of the hottest parties recently, even opening for Bunny from Rabbit in the Moon at Webster Hall a few weeks ago. Xander Phoenix has some fun when it comes to some bassy goodness without getting in your face, while Big Daddy keeps things up-beat, lively and just a bit weird as only burners can. The Blue corner is rounded out by two consumate professionals. The globe-trotting Coyoti will be gracing the decks with his eclectic & funky housey presence, while Tektite will pour on the breaks, bass with a gorgeous sense of timing and crowd awareness.
Looks to be a really good time so make sure to get out there.
