A Primer on Electro-Soul

http://whiteraverrafting.com/what-is-electro-soul/2013/09/24/

Electro-soul is the name of the sub-genre halfway between trip-hop and UK Garage with heaping spoonfuls of blues, funk, disco, dubstep and bass pushed into it. Pretty Lights is one of the pioneers of this style, and he can be seen describing it 10 seconds into his appearance at Counterpoint Festival here:

This style has started to make it’s way into the public consciousness slowly over the last several years, and White Raver Rafting does a great job discussing its roots and some of its more dedicated players such as GRiZ, Gramatik, Break Science and Artifakts.

Commissioner Pitts raves about TomorrowWorld during a BoC meeting in Fulton County, GA.

After the rousing success that was TomorrowWorld, the Board of Commissioners in Fulton County met, where one of them (Comm. Pitts) had some wonderful words to share about the event. Take a look and hear a Southern gentleman discuss a festival that had “no fights, no cursing, none of that stuff” and brought in $5mill in revenue for the greater Fulton county area. With TomorrowWorld planning on returning for the next 8 years, these kinds of laudatory words are music to the ears of any EDM fan here in the USA. Kudos all around again, and can’t wait to hear what’s in store for us come Memorial Day weekend in Woodstock. With Insomniac & Mysteryland both planning events there, I think the winners will be all of us.

Abandoned Nightclub Photos. Like Empty Club Photos, But Sadder.

White Raver Rafting has a gorgeous set of photos from clubs that had been destroyed or abandoned. There’s a lot of tragic & filthy gorgeous here. So I’ll stop talking and just post another picture or two. Show WRR some love, the compilation has links to moar and it’s a good time. And that HDR photo is totally real!

Photos of the Original CBGB’s Walls, Fresh Out of Storage.

The Gothamist checked out the original/archived walls from CBGB’s (the famed punk and hardcore club on the Bowery) and brought along a photographer. If you were into punk, rock, hardcore, metal or were just generally angry, you had at least one or two really good CBGB’s stories. Mine involved the Bloodhound Gang, Miller Lite and ambient hooliganism, with most of us cutting our teeth and seasoning our guitar & leather jacket palette in and around this place. Jim Kiernan (the photographer) was also a regular, so he’s created some great shots that need to get seen. Props to the Gothamist for making this happen.

All photos by Jim Kiernan.

What To Do if The Police Stop You at a Music Festival

Critical Information for your everyday life.

The Festival Lawyer's avatarShowbams

Festival-Lawyer

I know what you are thinking. What the heck’s a Festival Lawyer?

Is it a Public Defender who helps you out if you get arrested at a concert? No. (Although, to be honest, I wish I had thought of that as a job option after law school).

I’m a criminal defense attorney with a background as a former prosecutor. But I also have a background as a drummer, a DJ, and avid festivalgoer. The idea behind “The Festival Lawyer” column is to combine these backgrounds to give you legal and practical advice that will make you a safer, more responsible festivalgoer.

Advice like how to protect your rights if the police approach you at a concert. Or how to recognize the symptoms of a drug or alcohol overdose. We will talk about things like California’s Medical Marijuana laws or what to do if stopped for a DUI on your way…

Miley Cyrus drops some knowledge. Yea, you read that right.

Miley said quite a few smart things in her interview with Rolling Stone. Check it out if you want some insight into the pop star that knows way more than Bieber, doesn’t care what you think, and gets advice from Kanye West. She comes across way more intelligently than I expected, and I have a new found respect for her outlook and performance.
