Borgore gets kicked off the decks in Miami

For the record, I don’t care for Borgore most of the time. He’s a bit too buzz-saw’y for my tastes, but frankly, the fact that he’s the third Triple-A DJ to be kicked off the decks on South Beach is way more important than whatever he spins. 

EP of the Week: Flux Pavilion’s “Blow the Roof”

I have been a fan of this kid since someone bomped “Internet Connection” in their car for the first time and my head kind of got degaussed. His set at Starscape in 2011 was exactly what it needed to be and I am so glad that he was able to make a splash on this side of the pond.

“OneTwoThree” heralds the return of the massive, wobble-filled bass that we’ve come to expect from Flux. The bounce-y, vaguely gangsterish track leads into “The Scientist” which has more of that goodness but adds a fun vocal track and some triumphant chords which give it a glitchy but anthemic quality. “Blow the Roof” seems almost chip-tune’y in its liberal use of grimy bass and MC-enunciated vocals. It keeps up the energy of the EP while pushing into the even dirtier area of dubstep that seems almost rare these days in a lot of the larger EDM circles, as we are post-Skrillex. Is it welcome in this case however? Absolutely, and it’s an amazing reflection of what a banger should sound like these days.

Album Review for Old Hedgy Times (Vol. I, 1)

NNNNNNNNNN is a 24 years young chiptune producer that a friend put in my face a few weeks ago. His EP, Cosmic Lovely Lovely, is wonderful, in a misshapen-but-formless, heavy-but-delicate kind of way, if such a way to be wonderful exists. The EP drops right into it with some serious chops in “Johnny Mnemonic.” Besides reminding me of how hard I sucked at video games when I was a kid, is exceptionally well produced and has a rambling beat to it that I think chiptune peeps will love. The beat and the well-arranged chip lines give the track some depth that I didn’t expect, which is always welcome. The main melody is fun and smacks of an unforgiving level of an 8bit game I’ve not played in over adecade. I wish I could remember what it was and perhaps that’s the point.

Cirque Du Soleil teaming up with Skrillex to launch a trippy new Vegas nightclub/circle of Hell

Cirque du Soleil is getting into EDM…or Skrillex is running away with the circus? I’m not sure which, but it’s kind of amazing.  April 26th we’ll be seeing an opening of one of the first new offerings when it comes to luxury electronic dance music. Something’s going to happen but we’re not really sure what. Will it involve aerialists? Probably. Will there be bass? Bet on it. Confirmed residencies from Zedd, Sebastian Ingrosso and Baauer, with I’d imagine a laundry list of producers chomping at the bit to do crazy shit with Cirque du Soleil.

“America Fuck Yeah!” Tour: Boston comes out Swinging!

In an effort to ensure I don’t get fat, happy & fundamentalist by only looking at one city and it’s scenes, I’ve decided to start branching out and trying to hit places outside of Gotham where I can see how other cool people do cool things. This weekend, by way of a very dear friend, I was able to check out a sweet, underground electro-swing party in Boston. As I moved past the standard, fist-pumping, lite-beer-swilling, Avicii-spinning (that last one is new) Irish bar the front room of the bar contained, I pondered on eventual fist-fights between party-goers. Wherever my mind was going,by the time I’d checked my coat and paid my tab, It had gotten sidetracked by the Charleston and St. Germain cocktails by Macchu Pisco.

I’d like to say that there was something kitsch about what was happening, or that NYC does/did it better in the 90’s, but I can’t. It was an honest-to-God swing dance party with fun DJs and cool people. Vests, pocket watches, a liberal dollop of fedoras, shiny shoes, fast moving feet, girls spinning like tops and a respectable amount of martini glasses ensured there was no posing or biting in this crowd. The group wasn’t as cocky or flashy as what you’d find at a scene party in Gotham, but people also approached nervous others on the perimeter of the dance floor to ensure they shook their butts to the retro-amazing as well. Something I’ve never seen at a party in NYC, the varsity dancers approaching the JV with a confidence and warmth I didn’t think possible, and I’ve been checking out dance floors since the Clinton years. Digital Love Delivers.

I thought nothing of it until I looked up and saw Guncle, the St. Peter of Brooklyn’s pearliest & most ephemeral of gates, ushering me forward. As he is one of the most visible and delightful members of the underground, the line parted like the Nile, as we all know not to question the man when he wants something. After presenting my ticket, I received my wristband from Bob Bob-omb, the resident Techno Viking of Digital Native. In case you weren’t aware that East Coast burner camps had techno vikings, one would only need to look down to reconfirm this fact, as there were two large swords on the check-in desk, which were a wonderful way of reminding people coming in off the street not to screw with this party. Digital Native was here with The Love Muscle, and they weren’t getting pushed around by anyone while having a good time. After thanking my friends Guncle & Bob (it’s Mr. Bob-omb when you’ve done something wrong), I dropped off my outerwear & headed to the bar to take in the space. The BEX was there, performing, keeping the attention of the crowd on the dance-floor, DJ booth, and generally being the Mistress of Ceremonial Awesome that only she can be. The combination of sound, well-costumed staff, the alt-culture bus and the ridiculous art made me want to dust my costume off and take a sip from my camelbak if you know what I mean.
