Attend: Verboten & DiSORIENT Drop The New Year’s Afterparty

Instead of being like every other website and giving a scroll-fest/listicle about the clusterfuck that is New Year’s Eve, I’m only going to make one recommendation about what you should be doing on January 1st so get Tickets here. And it only applies if you’re still standing the next day. Verboten, the Great Bulwark Against EDM in Brooklyn is continuing the insanity from their New Year’s Eve event with some further quality. The all day drinking & brunch will be soundtracked by maestros Damian Lazarus, Hector & a posse of support. This party is going until 10 PM January 1st, so even if you sleep all New Year’s Eve, you’ll be rested for this, which isn’t the worst idea. Our friends at Talon&Claw will also be showcasing their finest, but a NYD whiteowljaguar set isn’t even the best part. They’re going to be closing out the main room (!!) but wait, there’s more! DiSORIENT, the premier Burning Man camp here in Gotham, is taking over their second room.

This sets a very interesting precedent, one I hope will be copied all over the place.  The idea that a burner camp/crowd will control a space inside of a permitted/retail venue is something that’s only happened a couple of times. The couple of times, are always the stuff of legend. Most L-train venues have to stay focused on making rent, generating revenue through door & bar and keeping the cops, community boards and people who moved to Brooklyn expecting quiet off their backs. This means that it’s hard to really cater to the high-art crowd that Burning Man draws. Which shifts crowd demographics ever so slightly. A small difference, but to some people that’s all that matters. This alliance will ensure that there are wacky people in Pornj costumes and a crazy side room, as opposed to just residents, vendors and a more relaxed bar. Additionally, they’re bringing their own squizzad of DJs, so you can be assured DiSORIENT’s singular take on “house + something else” issues forth all day, so really, Tickets here. Speaking of which, how dope is the music in both rooms? Check this stuff out, and know that there are half a dozen DJs I’m not even mentioning, because, you need to get there to hear it all:

Attend: Nora En Pure Delivers For InDeep 12.11.14!

Nora En Pure

My friends need to stop being awesome, cause all these Thursday night parties are killing me. InDeep has returned to NYC after the huge success of their debut event. Nora En Pure has been on the rise for a little while now and if you’re a fan of Indie Dance & Deep House, this is definitely going to be someone you need to catch. I’m always a fan of lady DJs that find their own unique sound away from what gets NERVO booked and all of that. She’s getting some backup from Alex English, a man who NYC would be noticeably less fun without. This night will be a definite surprise for the heads out in club land, so I hope you’re one of the people who gets to ask if you “were there” come Friday morning. Her latest podcast is fantastic, with superb track choices, flawless execution & really original transitions. Like, sometimes I want to hear a flute solo get me from one track to another in a deep house set.

Just in case you can’t wait, check out the latest InDeep Mix, ft. Vijay & Sofia Zlatko. These two have been killing it with their tracks getting picked up all over the EDM blogosphere. They’ve got another 80min of groovy, deep house for you, so between this & Nora’s mix, you’ve got almost your entire morning mapped out. Get tickets here & groove your Monday workday away, thanks to InDeep!

Attend: Verboten Brunch Has Dopeshoes & whiteowjaguar, Don’t Sleep On This.

As Verboten continues to kill it Thursday, Friday & Saturday nights, one of the big secrets about the spot is their surprisingly great brunch. In case you find yourself in the area after a hectic Friday night, or if you’re going to be up for a race, yoga or some other random non-hedonist purpose, check it out. Talon & Claw is a new production group & DJ collective based out of BK, doing some interesting work in art & design in addition to phat beats of course. If you missed their Wednesday night jam called Outre, check the latest mix from it and be jealz of people who don’t need to be “with it” come Thursday morning.

Dopeshoes is one of my favorite DJs that you haven’t heard enough about. I showcased her on Hometown Fire a while back, but she’s kept grinding away being awesome. Her addition to the Verboten day party means they know, as well as I do, how well her signature deep, sexy, sophisticated sound will do at Verboten. It’s seriously a match made in tasteful bass heaven.

Cooper James is the newest addition to the Talon & Claw collective, and for good reason it seems. His recent podcast for T&C showcases a tight, almost fidget’y style which will go far as the pendulum swings all the way back from Big Room.

Should be a fun, delicious time. Don’t get drunk off the mimosas, get drunk off the bass.

Attend: Vitamin B’s 6 Year Spectacular ft. Tony Quattro, Wavewhore & Gustolabs!

I am so proud of these people. Vitamin B has survived & prospered in NYC against all odds. Even though they throw parties in the House borough of a House city, on a House coast of a House country, they’ve been holding down the Breaks universe here in Gotham for what is an eternity in the NYC club scene. This institution has continued to showcase the finest talent they could get, with a following that grows every month. When I started this blog, Vitamin B was one of the first parties I covered, and I am so pleased they’ve weathered the venue closures, explosion of EDM around them and the general fuckery of NYC nightlife with grace & awesome nights. If you don’t know what you’re doing this weekend, now you do.

Attend: Drum & Bass Returns! Sigma And Crissy Cris At Slake!

Hawly crap, just when you thought you’d never see the light again, Drum & Bass returns to the NYC club scene! This two-fer event pack is giving me a whole lot of love for the Slake management right now. After absolutely nailing the Above & Beyond pre-party with Matt Lange, now they’re pulling in some delightful talent to make me question going to underground stuff this weekend & next.

Saturday, Wilkinson, the 2014 award winning D&B producer is headlining with Sigma, another prodigy. These two are going to put on an amazing show, and it’s one I am seriously considering staying at late into the morning. This might mess with my schedule, as I hadn’t put Slake on my Nov. 1st H-Ween schedule, but these DJs earn your ears, in a big way. The smooth, groovy D&B is definitely some of the best we’ll get here for months, so do not sleep on this y’all. Dali & Alex English, two of the steadfast dance floor warriors NYC owes its soul to, will be providing bass in your face support. So get tickets here, and the 160bpm will thank you.

The next week, a huge, even MASSIVE event is happening on the 8th. BBC Radio One Xtra’s very own Crissy Criss is crossing the pond with a merry band of DJs, including Jumpin Jack Frost. The potency of the UK team here cannot be underestimated. I think every veteran of Konkrete, Camo & the other d&b parties need to get at this event, especially if you’ve been a fan of his radio show. This looks to be a proper evening filled with high flying dance & sick fam attendance. Tickets are here, and this is a great way to kick Fall in the teeth.

Attend: Matt Lange & Bender Drop In At Slake Before ABGT100!

I have been waiting for something like this to happen for years. Slake is such a fantastic venue for showcasting the best in different genres of music, with Above & Beyond coming in, I know what I’m doing the night before. ANJUNABEATS HO!

Matt Lange has been one of the AnjunaBeats institutions I’ve tracked for years. The smooth complexity of his beats have a depth & lush richness that is hard to describe until you’re surrounded by it. The AnjunaBeats vibe is one I’ve been hoping would come to NYC since I discovered the label after being young and stupid and mistaking them for Armada in a YouTube search years ago. Best mistake ever. Slake has been on fire lately, bringing the best artists out before they blow up. To get my euphoric AnjunaDeep feel down at a club a couple of blocks from the Empire State building? Yes please.

The local fire that is Bender will be holding it down in support as well. There’s a playful, almost Loki-esque vibe with the house coming out of this guy. Don’t let it fool you though, there’s a deep iceberg of quality selection, mixing skills and crowd reading under the seemingly youthful exterior. Bringing a local DJ on to support Matt Lange is the right move, especially considering the terrible habit of headliners bringing their own support acts. While I’m always glad to see new talent from different places, there are piles of local DJs who deserve the spotlight and Bender is at the top of this Tri-State area list.

Cameron Kush has become synonymous with Slake, More Fridays & Tech Noir Saturdays in the same way Alex English is now a household name in households that love dubstep, electro, UK bass & future garage. The dude’s command of bass, trap, electrostep and whatever else he ‘s rocking out to that week will bring us in right. The resident is definitely a name to watch here in the city, and if you don’t believe me, check out the mix above from Slake. This looks to be a great night and a wonderful overture to Above & Beyond Group Therapy 100.
