The Best Mash-Up Of ALL TIME

Welp, this is amazing.

Sarah Vale's avatarMore Than Fables

You’re welcome.

I don’t know who Daily ReHash is but I owe them a cookie bouquet because I haven’t seen anything that has made me this nostalgically happy in months.  Guardians of the Galaxy is the film that made me the happiest in 2014 and Land Before Time scared me for life but it’s also one of the best cartoons of my childhood. So here you go internet, I hope it makes your Monday a little bit easier.

Mix Of The Week: Nu:Tone’s FABRIC Mix!

Nu:Tone is the most underrated Hospital Records selectro. This producer has created great tunes and he’s got a new album coming out, so he’s started to make the rounds getting word out. Thankfully Fabric picked him up for this, and we’ve got a wonderful half hour of funky d&b from him. The mix is quality start to finish, with some particularly delightful bits between the 12 & 20 minute marks. Great thing to put on while driving, pregaming or just jamming out cleaning the house. The Billon – Special remix he ends the mix out with, is not only one of his own originals, it freaking rocks. Check out the tunes and get ready for the album, Future History. I’m going to try and get my hands on it ASAP to figure out which tracks are going to get added to my daily listening Hospital playlist. I know Metaphor 6000 is already on it. If you don’t believe me, check out a preview of it below. It’s a taut, punchy d&b track that deserves your attention, and if this is the tip of the spear on the album? I’m in for a good time.

THE TOP WORST ACTS IN EDM AS DECIDED BY A 34 YEAR OLD MAN

I want to buy this guy several beverages and just listen to him talk. Everything here is on point, though he’s a little harsh on Armin. But it’s funny, so I’ll let it slide 😉

walmerfuckingconvenience's avatarWalmer Convenience

I’m fucking 34 years old. To some of you that is mad old. You’re like “that dude is gonna die soon”. Or you’re like “wow, are you a parent?”. Neither apply. And you know what? I’ve outlived Jesus. Yeah. It’s therefore logical to infer that I’m smarter than him, have made better life decisions and you would actually do better to listen to me. Fuck yeah. Now that we’ve cleared that I have unquestionable authority let’s get down to the nitty gritty. What is the worst shit in EDM today. Some would say everything. That’s an acceptable answer. The term EDM is fucking stupid as I explained here.

But what if we were picky? What if we picked the worst of the worst? Let’s stop fucking talking and start doing. I’m gonna force myself to actually listen to this shit for the first time in my life. Here’s the…

On Monstercat and the Legitimacy of Narrow Music Tastes

Some interesting thoughts about Monstercat, one of my favorite indie labels, that is doing some great work. Both in amassing a huge stable of awesome rising stars & in pissing off people on the internet. Both are valid goals but The Biohazard makes some excellent observations about how people listen to music in this age of limited aural bandwidth & experience. I quite like a lot of the artists on Monstercat, while there are a few I think should quit the game yesterday. However, I will always give props to a forward thinking, internet-ready label that doesn’t have its head up its ass when it comes to mobile/social/local. The idea that people are finding music by tree’ing through playlists & other people’s taste is the same as it’s always been. Whether it was vinyl, mixtapes, cds, miniDiscs (remember those fucking things?), or combing through people’s p2p shares, that’s how we’ve always found music. Monstercat makes it slightly easier if you like some of their stuff, to find other stuff you like.

Great read, thought provoking.

So… Monstercat.

I feel like this topic is going to be much more touchy than it should be.

In the electronic music scene, there’s a bit (read: a lot) of a stigma against fans of the indie label “Monstercat.” The stereotypical supporter of the brand is seen as a youngster with a Minecraft addiction, a vast library of YouTube subscriptions, and above all else, a distinct lack of experience in any label other than that of the feline in question. The interactions between fans and non-fans are generally just a bunch of back-and-forth with no real resolution. For example…

Person 1: “Monstercat music is the best!”

Person 2: “But what about this other label?”

Person 1: “Eh, all I really listen to is Monstercat.”

Person 2: “But that’s bad!”

Person 1: “Why?”

Person 2: “Because you’re not listening to other music!”

Person 1: “And why is that bad?”

Person 2: “Well……

A Mother’s Crusade to Amend the RAVE Act & How You Can Help Make Festivals Safer

This is one of the most important posts about dance, drugs, EDM and harm reduction you’ll ever see. The Festival Lawyer spends time explaining the history (if you don’t know what the “crack house statute” is, get to reading) of the law and how it’s helped to shape the modern EDM/festival era here in the USA. There’s way more info out there, but this needs to be shared widely and read by anyone who cares about dance music or seeing any of their favorite DJs ever again without the insane security/bullshit associated with Electric Zoo this year.

Post-header

Join The Festival Lawyer, Showbams and a new coalition called Amend The Rave Act (ATRA) to make Festivals safer for everyone.

The “RAVE” Act stands for the “Reducing Americans’ Vulnerability to Ecstasy Act”. It’s a federal law that might win the title for “most misnamed law ever” since instead of reducing young people’s vulnerability to the drug it has greatly increased ecstasy’s danger at festivals and raves.

Through a series of unintended consequences, the RAVE Act has made festivals much more dangerous places than they need to be. This year alone, two people died and about 20 were hospitalized at the Mad Decent Block Party in August in Maryland. There were also drug-related deaths at Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas and at LA’s Hard Summer festival.

Additional safety measures relating to drug use (also known as “harm reduction measures”) could be taken at a lot of music festivals and…

A Sherpa’s Tale

The plug-and-play dialog continues along, with this account, via a “sherpa.” The multi-million dollar camps had vets hook them up, and they’ve given an account of what went down. Suffice it to say, shit’s fucked up and crazy. Enjoy the read my friends, and understand that this may not be something that can be reversed. This is the desert of the real, in all its non-participatory glory.

sherpa porn

This story posted on Facebook is from a Burner who worked as a Sherpa this year at a multi-million dollar camp. We will keep the Burner’s identity anonymous unless they request otherwise. It is a fascinating, some might say shocking, inside look at the fancier side of Black Rock City.

“What!? You mean I’m a Sherpa!?”

A Tale from the K-hole at Burning Man 2014

By: Whatever

The hot Playa topic this year is all about Plug and Play camps and the controversy surrounding the loopholes they find to be able to run profitable business behind their private walls while on the Playa. As someone who appreciates a challenge  and a good story got share, I felt fortunate that I was able to be an employee working in one of these. Yes, I was a sherpa for a camp put in place by one of the members on the board of…

Plug-n-Play Goes All the Way…to the Top of the Pyramid [Update]

“Although the “joke” may have been amusing at first due to its irony, it is now no longer a joke: hotels at Burning Man have become a reality. There are multiple camps following in the footsteps of a “quirky luxe boutique on the Playa” – and charging five figures per head for rooms. Since August 6, Weitz has stepped down from the Board, and been replaced with Matt Goldberg – a Melbourne boy who is SVP of Global Market Development at $9 billion home shopping behemoth QVC. Once you jump the shark, it’s time for the infomercials.”

Not only are the money changers in the temple, but they’re selling rooms at the Inn. Amazing & well researched story about the gentrification & 1%-ization of BM. Kudos to Kanizzle for posting the story.

“self reliance is the greatest art” – my teabag message as I’m finishing off this post.

Earlier this year, Burning Man CEO and Founder Marian Goodell gave a talk at TEDx Tokyo, while social alchemist Bear Kittay, part of the “Burning Man 2.0” team, debuted his new song celebrating transhumanism and the Singularity (you know, that great idea where we’re all going to become one with robots and Google).

Marian released a couple of factoids in the speech that raised our eyebrows. One was that group revenues are now $30 million. The other was that the Burning Man Project board has 19 directors.

To me, that seems extraordinarily high, and Bain Capital agrees:

According to the BoardSource Nonprofit Governance Index 2010, the average board size is 19 and the median is 17. BoardSource reports that nonprofits with budgets of $10 million or more have an average of 18 members and…
