Midnight Music: Hundred’s New Music Video Of An ALLE FARBEN Tune Is Amazing.

This video seems to be one of the first true heirs to the triumph that was The Chemical Brothers music video for Star Guitar (linked below). I think this is on a train in China, but for the life of me I couldn’t tell you with any certainty (10 points to anyone who can comment ID’ing the area). The twee, indie vocals are put on top of a fun ambient midtempo melody. This helps frame the insane visuals that were captured by whoever has an insanely cool daily commute. This is a fun tune I wouldn’t have checked out otherwise so make sure to hit the video & their Soundcloud. (via Stoney Roads)

Midnight Music: Vauns – Sidelines EP [Dark Drum & Bass/Chillstep]

This Sidelines EP is one of the more high quality offerings I’ve heard from the darker ends of the chillstep universe as of late. Circles by Vaun is a smooth, vintage feeling track that makes excellent use of noir trumpet. I didn’t think noir trumpet was a genre, but after this, I may need to reconsider. That moody, retro trumpet seeps into the lush, almost steamy tune, that would be at home in any darkened lounge around 3 AM. Into The Night features seductive vocals by Animai, accompanied by UK bass & step’y beats that I’d definitely prefer to the remaining bastions of Michael Baystep at parties. Kismet solidifies Vaun’s position as maestro of dark, alluring, yet mysterious bass that I really want playing during the scene transitions in the eventual movie that’s going to be made about Gotham underground nightlife. There’s a potent focus to the sounds, without any sense of rushedness or aggressive bro bullshit. One Touch rounds out his solo offerings on the EP & does so in hushed, Burial-like tones, that we’re all better for hearing. The more artists doing this kind of quiet, garage’y bass, the better I think

Knowledge finds Vaun accompanied by Ill Chill, and as expected, the collab adds a layer of spoken word flow to the relaxed, irregular bass. I can’t wait for chillstep to ally with spoken word & hip hop to unseat trip hop as the genre of choice for rhymes that doesn’t involve gold chains & gun violence. The finale is where the EP gets its title, with Sarah Zad adding some ethereal humanity to the broken bass that Vaun lays down. Her stellar voice is a perfect match for the production choices Vaun adds into the mix, especially 90sec in. This tune screams for dance videos & pop/lock demonstrations. So, b-boys & liquid dancers, get on this. Your YouTube page will thank me.

Ryoji Ikeda Will Be Messing With Times Square Just Before Midnight All October.

So, apologies for the lateness of this post, as I had no idea. It seems ambient producer & artist Ryoji Ikeda has been dropping test patterns, images & sound every night in Times Square. He takes control of all of the billboards for 3 minutes a night, removing all the ads & putting minimal, ambient & IDM with visuals to match, from 11:57 to 12 midnight every night. I can’t say I’ve ever heard of a visual artist taking over all of the screens in Times Square, but now I REALLY want to see what that control station looks like. That must be a crazy set up. Check out some of Ikeda’s stuff below, if you’re into this kind of thing. If you happen to be in Times Square at 11:30, maybe hang out for 27 minutes to check this out before it ends Oct. 31st. (via Stoney Roads. Which, to learn about something cool in Times Square from an Australian music blog is just a sad proof of the times we live in.)

Midnight Music: Jacoo Issues A Gorgeous Post-Rock, Chill Tune Featuring Alan Watts.

Tonight, I’m giving up a mellow, vibe-y tune that the ethereal & fey Jacoo dropped over the weekend. “Watching You Breathe” uses one of my favorite vocal samples of all time, taken from one of Alan Watts’ famous series of lectures on the mind, life and the ideas of death and rebirth. It’s some far out stuff man, if you pick up what I’m laying down. Smooth ambient vibes, excellent sampling & some amazing modifications to the sound. Get at it, and check out some of the rest of Jacoo’s stuff. Talent rises, and it’s totally what’s needed to round out the weekend, if you’re still fighting the eventual Monday.

The Most Relaxing Song In the World (Apparently).

While I don’t put much stock in anything that the Daily Mail reports, the song is pretty damn chill. Long too. So, just in case you wanted to pass out at your desk on this Thursday morning, or if you need a track to soothe your frazzled nerves after your 3rd cup of coffee, we’ve got just was the doctor ordered. Kudos to the Marconi Union for this. Hit them up if you’re in Manchester and need to take the edge off a gabber show.
