I have been waiting for this for literally a decade. In 2004, the Nintendo Breakz Volume One was released. A tight joint of cuts, mixed samples and hilariously on point remixed 8bit themes. Zelda, Mario, Metroid, whatever else you wanted, it was there. The mastermind behind this, Saskrotch, spiraled me into months of listening to breakcore, glitch, hip hop and some terrifying IDM. His mixes were the stuff of legend. And just in case you don’t believe me, check his new one out below. The combination of glitch, hip hop, chiptune, breakbeats and the occasional dollop of D&B/Jungle, will get you moving. Just don’t play it for anyone who wears J. Crew. They might freak out a bit.

Caskey Is Totally The White Drake.
Ok, check this guy out, then Drake below. You tell me that’s not eery & close. I was watching the Insane Clown Posse Infomercial and this kid showed up. I really want to hear some drawl-heavy ebony & ivory rap going on with these two. They’re so lovable & in need of a sandwich.
Midnight Music: Rakohus – Biggie + Sonic = Win
I don’t know how I missed this the last time I was in Philly, but Rakohus officially needs to do everything ever. Not only is Sonic 3 one of my favorite games EVER, but the Biggie usage was appropriate and excellently mixed in. Rakohus has a bunch of these videos on his YouTube channel. Not only are the mashups made of win, but there’s dozens of chiptune remixes there too. Just in case you don’t believe me, check out the 8bit remix of Royals. Yes, that Royals. AND because I’m feeling generous, the 8bit remix of Get Lucky.
EP Of The Week: The Blancos – Heartless Romantic
I can’t say I’ve ever heard of these guys before, but I’m a serious fan. Fresh New Tracks pushed this EP this week the day after 420, and I’m sorry it took me so long to get to it. I’ve not heard quality grunge in years, and the combination of indie vibes, hip hop lyrics, a dash of blues and some competent/inventive beat work really got my attention. Check it out, and make sure to hit The Blancos up, because any band claiming to rock out from Gotham City will get infinite props from me.
Ludacris & Wiz Khalifa Discover Trap Music. And There Was Much Rejoicing.
So, I may have mentioned a while ago that Ludacris discovered Cashmere Cat, one of my favorite Lovetrap producers. Firstly, yes lovetrap is a genre, so deal with it. Secondly, the video for the track came out today. Boy oh boy is there a lot of sexy in this. It’s already got about 68k plays on Youtube, so once that VEVO machine gets rev’d up, you’re going to be hearing this thing officially all over the place. Hilarious rips of “Barbie Girl” lyrics, smooth rhyming by Luda and the irrepressible beats of CC make for a catchy track, even though you probably want to play this at home with your honey. Give it a spin, see how it feels, you’ll thank me.
Vitamin Water Forgets People In New York Have Internet.
Two weeks ago, Vitamin Water debuted a new commercial for its coconut water shot in NYC. The NYC they’re discussing however, has no connection to anything I’ve experienced. While I’ve read about baby exercise, ramen burgers & dinner theater, very few of us have the time, organization or cash flow to actually get a ramen burger. I also do not have an MC following me around with a giant boombox for a head. The ad is wild and somewhat hilarious, with some decent hip hop (for an ad) interspersed throughout & the giant boombox changes like an anime character depending on the scene. Hey Japanese people, just ask me, I’ll show you to the right spots in Brooklyn, don’t listen to Glaceau.
Dat Impala Tho.

Found in the bowels of Imgur & Reddit, I have no idea who originally drew this but it’s freaking perfect.
The Externalities of Puff Daddy.
The Grid 10 gets all the props for picking up this thread from prominent sport, hip hop & excellence forum The Coli. The review of all the terrible things that have occurred are hilarious and damning at the same time. Whether it’s Tupac, Biggie, Ciroc, Mase or the other tragedies associated with Diddy, this wraps it up nicely. Head on over to The Grid 10 for more news, jokes and music.
1996-2Pac allegedly killed by Southside Crips as revenge for a beating that was revenge for a Death Row chain being snatched for a Sean Combs bounty
1997-Notorious B.I.G. killed in Los Angeles as revenge for murders of Pac and Jake Robles
2002– MTV Making Da Band. The list of tragedies probably deserve its own thread *see Chopper Suit.
2004-Co-Creates a Rap The Vote campaign to get c00ns to support John Kerry the weakest democratic candidate since Walter Mondale. Loses to George W. Bush. Months later Katrina happens.
2007-Partners with Ciroc, causing single mothers to neglect their children and Black men to skip child support payments in an endless chase to cop his high-priced Kool Aid”
Mobb Deep Announce New Tour! Russia, Germany, France Holland & Denmark Watch Out!
Mobb Deep, rulers of the Queensbridge projects have returned. Their style of rap, coming out of Queens projects is different to to the style of rappers coming out of projects in Brooklyn and the Bronx. Their venerable The Infamous turned 20 this week, and to celebrate, they’re going on a European tour that makes me annoyed I live on this side of the pond. Again. Get at it and kudos to FACT for dropping the news and enjoy the hell out of it you crazy euro hip hoppers.
Another Handful of Hip Hop
Coming at you again with another bunch of tracks that I’ve stumbled upon that remind me of where I came from. Lots of great lyricists on the streets these days. This time around, I’ve got 3 tracks from artists mentioned here before, and 3 new ones.
Schoolboy Q drops a fantastic set of rhymes over some electro soul beats in the first tune. An impressive start, but wait, there’s more.
Tinashe is doing quite well and decided to drop this gorgeous remix of a Chance The Rapper track into a mixtape she dropped in 2012. Chance shows up @ 2:12 and it’s featured correctly, while the remix ebbs & flows in the background. Glad to post about a lady remixing a rapper any time I can find quality, because fuck the patriarchy.
Speaking of fucking & the patriarchy, Ludacris has a new single, featuring Wiz Khalifa & beats by Cashmere Cat. This is a huge opportunity for Cashmere Cat, but make no mistake, this track is NSFW like woah. Definitely music for closed doors. Or a really sexy party, whatever your tastes.
This is an interesting one, straddling indie, Slim Shady/Chance The Rapper style silly flow and some interesting bass. It’s definitely a track that you need to take a second look at because this kid’s gonna go somewhere if he plays his cards right.
Give it up for my boy King Terry for this track. I played trumpet for years, and those smooth, jazzy transitions are seriously really nice. Can’t wait for the next King Terry track, it’s been too long I think. Gotta keep getting that grind on.
DVS is a local favorite that’s going to get maximum rep on this site until I don’t have fingers. The new track he’s featured on is about two steps from being better than the last 5 “EDM bangers” I’ve heard. The growling bass and intensely quick lyrical work is not to be trifled with. These guys have chops and they can hold their own wherever the battle takes them. Word is that there’s new hotness coming from DVS, so I’ll keep you posted on that.
