Midnight Music: Oriel Poole – Foothills [Soulful Indietronica]

Oriel Poole came out of nowhere and put this into my face. I’m so glad she did. There’s a soothing majesty to the tune. The trip-hoppy vibe grooves along with some well executed indie chords. It feels vintage while giving off the airs of freshness. Ms. Poole has a timeless voice that I am looking forward to becoming familiar with. This is The 2:45 break shows what the song is capable of, with she & Max Savage exploring the space. It might sound a bit more melancholy than some of my other recommendations, but with autumn in full swing (in the Northern Hemisphere anyway), it’s definitely good sweater music.

Attend: Matt Lange & Bender Drop In At Slake Before ABGT100!

I have been waiting for something like this to happen for years. Slake is such a fantastic venue for showcasting the best in different genres of music, with Above & Beyond coming in, I know what I’m doing the night before. ANJUNABEATS HO!

Matt Lange has been one of the AnjunaBeats institutions I’ve tracked for years. The smooth complexity of his beats have a depth & lush richness that is hard to describe until you’re surrounded by it. The AnjunaBeats vibe is one I’ve been hoping would come to NYC since I discovered the label after being young and stupid and mistaking them for Armada in a YouTube search years ago. Best mistake ever. Slake has been on fire lately, bringing the best artists out before they blow up. To get my euphoric AnjunaDeep feel down at a club a couple of blocks from the Empire State building? Yes please.

The local fire that is Bender will be holding it down in support as well. There’s a playful, almost Loki-esque vibe with the house coming out of this guy. Don’t let it fool you though, there’s a deep iceberg of quality selection, mixing skills and crowd reading under the seemingly youthful exterior. Bringing a local DJ on to support Matt Lange is the right move, especially considering the terrible habit of headliners bringing their own support acts. While I’m always glad to see new talent from different places, there are piles of local DJs who deserve the spotlight and Bender is at the top of this Tri-State area list.

Cameron Kush has become synonymous with Slake, More Fridays & Tech Noir Saturdays in the same way Alex English is now a household name in households that love dubstep, electro, UK bass & future garage. The dude’s command of bass, trap, electrostep and whatever else he ‘s rocking out to that week will bring us in right. The resident is definitely a name to watch here in the city, and if you don’t believe me, check out the mix above from Slake. This looks to be a great night and a wonderful overture to Above & Beyond Group Therapy 100.

Midnight Music: Laura Doggett – Moonshine (Jakwob Remix)

Laura Dogget - Moonshine (Jakwob Remix)

Jakwob is a name you probably haven’t heard of on the American side of the pond, unless you’re a huge fan of UK dubstep and bass music (like myself). His remixes & original work has been a shining beacon of quality in the dubstep, drumstep & chill bass spaces. This remix of a delicious melancholy tune by the irrepressible Laura Doggett. The irregular bass provides a stunning backdrop for her sublime vocal work to glide along. This is some serious UK underground and Jakwob needs as much exposure as possible, especially when selecting amazing vocal artists like Laura Doggett to work with. Don’t sleep on this one, it’s hoodie weather music, bomp it in good (non-Beatz) headphones in the rain.

Midnight Music: Vianney – Je Te Déteste (Glastrophobie Remix) [Deep French House]

Vianney - Je Te Deteste (Glastrophobie Remix)

I was tipped off to this soothing & upbeat tune by V/Man, an authority over at FreshNewTracks. I am a huge fan of the lack of English, and the beauty of the French language is on display here. The deep vocal vibes are complimented by some choral beats & a funky guitar. I’ve talked about Glastrophobie a couple of times and I’ve gotta say, I keep coming back to the competence & orchestrally styled composition. There’s a sense of harmonies here that you don’t find in most producers of his stature, and I cannot thank him enough for it. Put it into your face and gear up for the next week ahead of you.

Midnight Music: TheFatRat Returns! Unity Is Chippy Glitchy Gorgeous!

TheFatRat - Unity

One of my truly favorite rising star artists, TheFatRat has returned. I’d been lamenting the lack of an original release from this guy for way too long, and the waiting is finally over. There’s a scintillating competence in TheFatRat’s production that can’t be matched. The chip/glitch/electro has some serious spunk without getting too heavy or serrated. The track continues the irrepressible positivity of TheFatRat’s sound, which I could not support more. The vocals arrive when they need to, and they receive the same extravagant treatment as his beats. There’s a soul to TheFatRat that I can’t wait to see expand as people discover this MUST LISTEN track. (Artwork by jordangrimmer.deviantart.com)

Mix Of The Week: InDeep 2 – My Digital Enemy [Deep House Deliciousness]

Thanks to my people over at EDMTunes for the tip on this one. InDeep is fast becoming a must follow presence online. Their Deep House vibes are quite potent and I’m not sure when they’re hitting NYC, but it can’t be soon enough. My Digital Enemy pushes out a solid hour of deep grooves. The mix stays consistent, and it’s a great little thing to throw on while enjoying one of the last nice weekends of the year (for the Northern Hemisphere anyway). Get at it and show some love to My Digital Enemy for the great work they put in.

Midnight Music: 2Pac – Changes (Vijay & Sofia Zlatko & Kasual Remix) [Tropical House]

My boy Brockelbank tipped me off to a great track that EDMTunes dropped today. This collaboration between Vijay, Sofia Zlatko & Kasual is a winner. Frankly, I have a low tolerance for disrespectful 2Pac remixes, as “California” and “Changes” occupy a very precious piece of my musical heart. Thankfully, it’s done exceedingly well, and the track has a deep & almost tropical vibe to it. The focus on the vocals that we seem to have forgotten, hip hop with meaning, is a great choice, with the emphasis on 2Pac as it should be. The track is a Free Download and definitely makes me excited to see what this Zlatko pair & Kasual are up to next. I could use some more reworked hip hop in my deep house sets.

Midnight Music: Oscilla – Colours (ft. Allume) [Soulful Indietronica]

Oscilla - Colours Ft. AllumeTonight, I bring you a gem I found on the Stoney Roads (Australian) blog. This shimmering future bass tune ft. the delightful vocals of Allume is exactly the sound I think more American artists need to be experimenting with. The combination of exceptional vocal work and synth lines that can really bring a pop audience to its knees. The words Imogen Heap come to mind, and that’s an effect that cannot be ignored. The piece could go on for hours if need be, this sound is a great I can’t wait to see others move in this direction.

Midnight Music: Faul & Wad Ad vs. Pnau – Changes (Lash Remix) [Potent Indietronica]

Lash has been on a tear as of late, with a Cazzette remix and some work elsewhere on soundcloud. They’ve gotten my attention because of just how irrepressible they can be. This Changes remix from (group name of the month incoming) Faul & Wad Ad vs. Pnau (bless you) is pretty catchy & almost too sweet for most. This is a festival tune that I hope the Aussies get a hold of, with the Southern Hemisphere party season just starting to warm up. This may be a little too positive for the Halloween parties we’ve got incoming, but if you do hear it out, make sure to shake your booty. The track has gotten over 60,000 plays since it was dropped two weeks ago, so get in on the ground floor on this one.

Midnight Music: New REBOOTED Release! Scott Bond & Marc Mitchell – Airfoil [Trance Rise Continues]!

I asked for it and it came! The next release from REBOOTED showed up today and I couldn’t be happier with it. The remix pack has 5 proper trance remixes of this Scott Bond/Marc Mitchell track named Airfoil. I can’t wait to hear one of these in a FSOE or a 138 set. Grab the 5pack at Beatport here!

The REBOOTED remix keeps the driving force of the label in the center ring. There’s some souring electric guitar-styled synths and a beat that is worthy of any trance DJ’s set, if they know how to handle it of course. This is a solid, punchy track with a very fulfilling break, one you have to wait like a proper trance head for.

The Simon Templar remix starts off with a bit more of a funky beat, but that pulls into some chilled vibes that bunch together into a playful remix that I’m a huge fan of. Simon Templar is just one of a half dozen artists I’ve discovered because of this label. Good on Scott Bond for this, that’s some amazing scouting. The Templar mix evokes classic Oakenfold feels that pulse through your mind playfully,  the whole thing clocking n at 9 minutes. This takes its time, like good trance should.

The Standerwick remix pulls us back into some more catchy, clubland beats that remind me of almost Voodoo & Serrano or Green Court. There’s a vintage feel that’s complimented by the solitary piano & vocal line, polished to a mirror shine. This is a track I can’t wait to hear Solarstone play live somewhere.

Just in time for Halloween, the Splattered Implant remix has a menacing, haunted twist to it. The beat is half psy-trance, half Blade 1, and I couldn’t be happier. The tune feels like it would be right at home on Planet Perfecto, but it’s here, betwixt 4 regular trance tracks, and this is the kind of forward thinking I’ve been waiting for. The tune explodes after a vocal sample that is totally unexpected and turns the track in a darker, vaguely psychedelic style.

Stephane Badey closes out the EP with a driving, hard trance rework of Airfoil. There’s a dollop of Infected Mushroom-style psy on this thing, but it packs Veracocha-style punch, so it’s not to be underestimated. It pulls back into pure vibes before building deliciously. This is definitely one of my favorite driving crescendos in years and leaves me angry I didn’t get more. A+ work all around once again, so grab it on Beatport and
