Jimi Hendrix Was Chill, Smooth & Above All Of That Jazz (PBS Digital Studios)

I really like the animated series Blank on Blank that PBS does on Youtube. The animation of classic interviews brings an interesting perspective and some clever artistic choices to a stagnant interview series that would be expected of Public Broadcasting. I’d never watched a long-form interview with Jimi, and he’s quite the character. Very chill, very groovy and quite aware of the minstrel show that was and is live music performance.

Dave Chappelle Crowdsurfing From The Stage To The Bar At a Skrillex Show.

Chappelle showed up at the Skrillex concert in the Bay Area on Monday night. He took a dive off the stage, then rode the crowd to the bar to get a drink. What more is there to say? Besides, I’M RICH, BITCH! (via Beatport)

Pussy Riot Killed It On Colbert In Their First American TV Appearance.

http://laughingsquid.com/pussy-riot-members-make-first-american-television-appearance-on-the-colbert-report/

This is probably one of the most important interviews you’re going to watch involving music, dance & free expression in the surveillance age you’ll see in a long time. Pussy Riot stands strong & unbowed, taunting Putin to re-arrest them, discussing the secret number of Pussy Rioters (is that a word yet?) including the ones still jailed, and explaining their trip to the USA. Besides raising awareness, they’re also meeting prison & human rights activists in an effort to learn more about how to fight these kinds of tactics. Props to them & as always, #freepussyriot. Someone Is Making Mixtape Coffee Tables.

http://www.geeksaresexy.net/2014/01/29/custom-made-cassette-tape-coffee-tables/

Just in case you needed to spend $1500.00 and not feel it was a total waste, pick up one of these built-to-specification cassette tape coffee tables. If you know the difference between these different cassettes, you’ll have a good time with this. Just make sure to run the purchase by your spouse before it shows up at your front door. A Rape In Black Rock City

While this isn’t about music or dance culture, I think this is something the underground needs to grapple with meaningfully if they (as an aggregate & individuals) really want to claim to be better than your average gropefest bar or club.

A Guest Post by Clarisse Thorn

This is an article about sexual assault at the Burning Man arts festival, and the issues that surround this topic at Burning Man. It includes accounts of a particular assault.

I am writing this post as a feminist, as someone with extensive experience in the BDSM community, and from the perspective of a 2-year Burner with many many Burner friends. If you’d like to know more about my background, or if you don’t know much about Burning Man, it might help to read my review of Burning Man 2012. You can find my previous work about BDSM and sexual communication at my blog or in my books.

I want to acknowledge up front that there are a number of social justice issues at the festival, some of which I summarized in my review, and some of which were recently highlighted when the “Cargo…

Pharrell’s Hat Had A Point. He’s Also Got Jokes On Everyone.

NYMag’s The Cut is the only outlet I’ve seen report this. It seems Pharrell’s hat was actually an elaborate fashion reference that throws all of the Smokey The Bear/Arbys/Curious George/Diglett references into sharp relief. Seems they’re not as clever as they thought they were.

Buffalo Girls (the video above), was first performed in 1844 by a Blackface minstrel singer, before it got picked up by the heads who re-did it. It’s actually just super retro, so, there’s your morning idle chatter salvo for you.

Critical Advice For Guitars on Planes From Actual Advice Mallard.

Via Traditional Hard Robots, the fact that I’ve never encountered this piece of advice before. I played guitar when I was five years old and my parents would have obliterated me if it hadn’t survived a plane trip. Can Jack White buy billboard space in Times Square to transmit this information globally?

Also, shout out to Actual Advice Mallard for always coming through.

With New 808s & 909s On The Way, Could The 303 Be Next?

With news of the TR-808 coming back to the delight of acid house & detroit techno enthusiasts the world over, it seems Roland has struck a chord when it comes to zealous fans that seem to have a bit more $$ in their pockets than they did in the early 90’s. FACT Mag did some digging and is providing some interesting evidence to support the idea that a 303 will be coming as well as a new 909. The TR-808 announcement left a lot of people arguing about whether the digital protege of the original analog 808 machine could ever match the classic, but it hasn’t seemed to slow Roland’s erm…roll, as it were. There’s going to be a lot of very excited people and if we see a resurgence of acid house replace the trap/electro heavy dance floors of 2013, I don’t think you’ll see too many disappointed old-timers, myself included.

George Clinton And Parliament Funkadelic To Record Direct-to-Vinyl Live LP & Teach Funk Master Class

The God of Funk & his Pantheon, Parliament Funkadelic blew minds when they announced their latest creative gambit. At Metropolis, one of the sacred spaces in recording/production, George Clinton will be recording a “super limited edition album” direct to vinyl for a very select group of mega-fans. Metropolis in the UK is one of the only studios in the world equipped to do this, and if you’re into it, you can not only attend recording sessions, but also a master class by Clinton himself, The Vinyl Factory reports. This is probably going to raise the general funk quotient of the planet by an order of magnitude or two, so hit up PledgeMusic if you’re interested in attending. As, 150 sterling for a class with the p-funk impresario himself is a freaking steal.
