Barclays Is Getting A Green Roof?

Gizmodo mentioned the WSJ report that the Barclays Brooklyn Arena is getting a brown/green roof over it. This is kind of a stunning admission considering the idea was proposed & then tossed 6 years ago. Though, while the WSJ doesn’t believe it, I definitely agree with Gizmodo that the primary purpose for the roof has nothing to do with providing a High Line or a green space near Atlantic Avenue. Barclays is loud. As anyone who has moved through the neighborhood it’s in while a party happens can tell you, shit is not ok all the time. I’m all for bomping parties and making the experience as awesome as possible, but like, let’s be respectful. Especially with new developments in the neighborhood every day, it’s just going to get worse. Just imagine if Borgore or Skrillex sold out the stadium. It would vibrate the subway.

2,000 Person Capacity Venue Opening in Bushwick (East Williamsburg For People From Manhattan)!

A former steel factory in Colonial Williamsburg at 319 Frost Street is going to become The Brooklyn Classic. The Gothamist, via The New York Daily News reports a liquor license has been purchased for the building under the name of a former president of the NY division of Live Nation, who now rocks out with Bowery Presents, yes, of That Bowery Ballroom. To put this in perspective, Output has a capacity of 450. If this manages to jump through all of the legal hullabaloo that accompanies the creation of a new venue in Gotham, we’re going to see a massive new home for insane parties.

House Of Yes Returns!

After the fall of House of Yes last year, many of us wept for the loss of one of the last true performance spaces in Brooklyn & the greater city at large. The Brooklyn Paper, in an interview with Anya Sapozhnikova, one of the founders of the critical home to aerialism, fashion shows, live performance & general good times. The new space will have a larger stage & seating area, and they’re partnering with a restaurateur who will be running a smokehouse restaurant & bar out of the spot as well. This bodes really well for the Gotham Underground. I can’t wait to help make it become a reality. (via Brooklyn Paper)

The #1 Billboard Hit From 100 Years Ago Was Performed By Bill Murray.

A friend of mine wished me a Happy New Year by sending me the top hits of 1914. I was kind of stunned that kind of documentation existed, so I dug into it. It seems a guy named Bill Murray was all the rage, charting over and over with massive (ok, nowhere near massive) hits like “It’s a Long, Long Way to Tipperary,” “He’d Have to Get Under (To Fix Up His Automobile)” & “When You’re All Dressed Up & No Place to Go.” Two of three sound like they’d be bomping tracks with serious twerk potential. A stark reminder of the times, the #2 hit was a UK War hit (you know, because WWI was being fought at the time), “Are We Downhearted? No!” Which, I suppose makes sense. People needed some cheering up, while trying to not be killed by the millions of German soldiers advancing towards them in France. And sure it wasn’t the Bill Murray you were thinking of, but would you have clicked otherwise? 😀

Don Rickles At The Kraft Music Hall In Brooklyn In 1968.

Frankly, I’m not sure whether I’m more impressed by what Don Rickles looked like as a young guy or the quality of the video recording from 1968. Considering it all needed to be done with long cables, analog signals & no internets/data/compression, if you’re into retro stuff like this, it’s a fun little look at Brooklyn way, way back.

Broke On Holiday: ReSolute, Cielo (Free), Output (Free), Sankeys & More!…Turkey Day Weekend!

http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?542313

There’s quite a bit going on over the long weekend so you have no excuse to whine about being stuck dealing with your family, as long as you live in limping distance to the 5 boroughs. I’ve got a semi-competent list of quality goods that won’t break the bank. That way, if you need to buy another drink to deal with your family, you don’t have to sell any plasma. I know, I’m a generous soul, once again making it all better with bass. Here they are, ordered by day. Come on out and burn off all of them stuffing-related calories. Pictured above is Hector Moralez, with deep support at an underground venue in Brooklyn. There’s a strong chance this event will be fabulous, and a certainty it’ll have a deep, latin, funky & soulful vibe to it. There aren’t very many of these spaces left in NYC, and at $15.00, you’re paying what I paid when there were more than a decade ago.

London legend Rough Trade to drop a Vinyl Warehouse + Venue in Williamsburg!

November 25, the legend of Rough Trade on the other side of the pond are finally arriving in Gotham. Not only is there going to be a big ass vinyl flagship store, but a new venue sharing a 15,000sq. ft. (alleged) “warehouse” space. Honestly, this is exciting. A new venue and a new flagship vinyl record store in Williamsburg? It’ll almost be worth going back to that neighborhood on Friday nights. Bring your needles. (via The Vinyl Factory)

Baby DJ School? Because a drum set wasn’t loud enough it seems.

http://gothamist.com/2013/09/09/baby_dj.php

Natalie Elizabeth Weiss has announced her Baby DJ School, starting Sept. 18th. It’s gotten picked up by Gothamist and the rest of the EDM Blogosphere simply because the idea of extreme younglings screwing around with an MPC controller or turntable needles both confuses and scares most of us. I…just…don’t know what to say. It’s $200 for an 8 week class, and I wonder what the final will be. Because if DJ Naptime drops some epic bottlestep, I’m going to start asking promoters how they get under-10 DJs into the club in Ibiza. If you don’t believe me, links to the press release and her blog are below:
