The Truth Hurts.

Interesting discussion over at Stoney Roads on mainstream vs. “underground EDM. Feel free to read it, I just really like the image. Ask someone whose music taste you respect the last time they listened to big room electro or brostep of their own volition. When was the last time someone truly put on Animals not trying to either make a point, or make a joke? Times are changing. The only places a lot of those sounds are going to find homes are niche markets and Michael Bay movies in a couple of years. The underground will keep sounding progressively different, as the mainstream pop/edm train starts to work its way through genres.

Anyone want to guess what comes after deep/progressive house shakes out over the next few seasons? Trance? Breakbeat? Minimal Techno? MauStep?

Midnight Music: TastyTreat – Up Late ft. Father Dude [Future Bass/Chill Trap]

TastyTreat - Up late ft. Father Dude
This Hebinomichi compilation must be crazy, if this is what it sounds like. This stellar duo from Cali, TastyTreat collabs with Father Dude (a Gothamite) to push out a shimmering future bass track, steeped in chill trap elements. The playful chord progressions, stuttering bass and soulful call out vocals do a great job of solidifying the non-rave ground that some of the newer funky/indie tunes have been trying to capture. This is a new world and we’ve got R&B vocals hanging out with trap beats, running into some fun little irregular low end. Stuff people never thought of pushing together even a few years ago (hipsters I know, your favorite group was doing this in a basement in 2009, I know), and it’s slowly showing up in a selection of places around the globe. Can’t wait to see how this vibe injects itself into the Western Hemisphere festival scene, especially outside of Mad Decent parties. (via Stoney Roads)

Midnight Music: Kove – Way We Are ft. Melissa Steel [Drum & Bass!]

New Drum & Bass! Kove has been a bastion of occasional quality over the months, and I’m super pleased that new awesomeness has come out featuring stunning vocalist Melissa Steel. The tune is exactly what you want out of a vocal liquid track. Coming at you fast & hard, the tune doesn’t disappoint, while not taking any risks. The vocal work is perfectly matched with the lush & gliding drum and bass done by Kove. Kove has been on my radar for a while now, but they’ve definitely been upgraded to “put everything they come out with into my face. You should too. (via Stoney Roads)

Maxim (of The Prodigy fame), Pursues Solo US DJ Tour.

The Prodigy are a strong contender for my favorite live act ever. Strong praise but if you’ve ever seen them live (or 4 times, like I have), you know that they’re definitely able to control a crowd in a way most other EDM artists could only dream of doing, and were doing so when those artists, producers and DJs were in middle school. It seems the guy who got right in my face at Nation in DC is going to stop moshing and start spinning. The tour details and a handy-dandy mixtape, filled with dubstep, ragga, drum & bass and a dash of anger, are below. I didn’t know he was backing up Feed Me, but it looks like that went over well, so this should be a good time. (via Stoney Roads)
