Nightlife Sociology

I was recently connected with this individual, who speaks about the scene in Boston. There’s a lot to be said on the use of the nightlife space for social change, political activism and the divisiveness that comes when others use parties to sell the same way marketers use sex. I’m a big fan of this perspective, so expect more reblogs from Ms. Kimball in the future.

Why Ultra Music Festival needs a new approach

This is something I’ve been hoping happens for years. Half a dozen advocacy & harm reduction groups are coming together to fight on behalf of you, the dancer/attendee. When the festivals throw up their hands and pretend there’s nothing they can do about kids making bad decisions, it seems it’s fallen to us, the attendees to look out for each other and educate one another while enjoying ourselves. I’ve taken the pledge. Have you?

By just about every objective marker this year’s edition of Ultra Music Festival in Miami was a massive success. Over 165,000 people attended the event. The 2014 Ultra Live Stream of the event had 9.7 million views from more than 190 countries. Financially the festival was thought to bring in about 200 million dollars of revenue for the city of Miami.

However, the festival also had a number of significant problems. First, a security guard was left in serious medical condition after being trampled during a gatecrashing incident. Then, one of the attendees, 21-year-old Adonis Espoco, died after being taken out from the festival when thought to be too drunk and left in a car to “sleep it off.” In addition, over 80 people were arrested and 153 people were treated by paramedics during the event.

Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff both immediately called for Ultra…

The Kids Are Alright: 5 Tracks From Under 18 Producers That Rock

While the elders will always command the most respect, every year the producers get younger and younger. Porter Robinson, Madeon and Mr. Garrix all got their start before they could drink in the USA, but the kids I’ve got for you today haven’t even graduated high school. Just in case you were feeling like you’d accomplished a lot with your life.

First up, on a tip from EDMTunes, Tronxslyde drops some serious multi-barrel electro. There’s some chip, there’s some euphoric (I didn’t know there could be euphoric electro) and a heavy dose of “when did Madeon release a new track?” There’s so much quality here, and he’s 14. Fourteen. Like, I don’t even think I knew what music was at 14, and this kid’s dropping bompin’ electro. Amazing, and it’s a Free Download.

Just A Gent has been making major waves down under over the last few months, churning out remix after quality remix. This tune has seen daily rotation on my commute and it makes the subway less dismal. Which is a feat, as us Gothamites know. The upbeat remix of the American Authors track is not to be missed, especially as this 16 year old is going to start getting a lot of attention.

Zaxx’s new tune “Annihilate” is about as brutal as the title implies. There’s a big room anthem sound here that can’t be ignored. This is the sound most people try and get by red-lining their shit and failing hard. Never heard of this 16year old but I won’t soon forget the name I don’t think. Drop this on your friends during fist-pump sets.

Another 16 year old, this time a classically trained pianist & cellist, White Raver Rafting tipped me off to this remix of M83’s offering to the Divergent soundtrack. The soundtrack is surprisingly electronic, and Miller Guth does the original & M83 proud. The progressive build is fantastic & the break is exactly what you’re going to hear at every festival this summer, except a little more pretty and a little less Animals’y. There’s a sparkly nature to it that I can

The elder in the group clocks in at 17, and has an astonishing command of a DAW. The production value on this ambient chillwave/future garage is staggering. The talent is serious and there’s a competence with syncopation that we don’t see from producers of any age, much someone who should by all rights still be goofing off in band class. Someone needs to snatch this kid up and make sure he doesn’t turn into the UK Garage version of Bieber.

Midnight Music: Miike Snow – Silvia (Robotberget Remix)

This delightful, energetic & synthed out remix of Silvia by Miike Snow is a surprisingly quality issuance. The original’s vocals are knob-fiddled with to great effect by Robotberget. This is a track I first discovered a few years ago, but I keep coming back to it. The animation was a project done by Daniel Teeny on YouTube, which is wonderful as well. The introduction piano cues & strings showcase the nuance of the animation, and I’ve gotta say, if iTunes gave me 3d frequency graphs, I might consider using it. Enjoy these 8 minutes of potent vocal symphonic house in the 125bpm range.

Midnight Music: Four Tet – “Unspoken” (Stunning Remarks By One A Day)

I’ve been a fan of Four Tet for a while, but it’s a fandom that I’ve always kept close to the chest. Just like my love of Burial, it’s not really something you can describe at a bar or a party without seeming like a stupid fucking hipster. Four Tet has been breaking ground in electronica for longer than I’ve been aware of him, and One Song A Day took the time to really give him the respect he deserves. Four Tet is so awesome he has a Wikipedia page, and if you don’t understand why, just listen to either of the pieces of media I’ve included in this post. There is a poise, grace & vision to the work he does, which, compared to Afro “I can’t count to 4” Jack’s latest work. One A Day reminded that music criticism should involve an awareness of music, and as someone who has that, I can’t agree more with his choice of Four Tet. You can tell, in under 360 seconds that every single note put there, is put there for a reason. This is not a mistake or a mixdown artifact. You’re hearing it because he wants you to. There’s a very small group of artists doing that in the EDM space. Four Tet is one of them. You’ll hear about the others if you keep checking this blog I wager.

Idiot’s Guide To Smart People: Music

CaptureOk, everything about this is correct. This quote, less than 20 seconds into the video, really captures how bad it’s gotten in some circles these days.

It takes a smart person to love something in a way that takes all the fun out of it.”

There’s about 2:45 of good stuff here, so put it into your face, and trust me, don’t google Louisiana Swamp Pop. It sounds like flies & relaxed sadness.
