1. How was your summer? Any cool gigs, or fun stories? My son came into existence 4 months ago today, I was luckily home earlier today. I had a day off, took a train home from Baltimore, see my son, his 4 month birthday. Every month I’ve been able to come home, which is pretty big. I’m pretty stoked to be back in the studio and vibe off of that, the feelings and emotions and inspiration from that.

James Murphy picks up former Sepultura singer & drummer to form “The Metal White Stripes.”

So James Murphy of LCD soundsystem fame called up Sepultura and said “only bring the singer and the drummer, this project is totes top secret.” And Iggor Cavalera & his brother Max from Sepultura agreed. Iggor has sold around 20million records with his former band and neither the singer or drummer of Sepultura are to be fucked with. Which is why I am so freaking interested in this development. James Murphy put on hold producing the new Arcade Fire album to do this. You’d think he’d rest on his laurels, but no, the Metal White Stripes apparently. This should be fun. (via The Guardian)

1. You’ve been the standard-bearer for years now, do you find Silent Disco is catching on? Definitely. There’s another whole outfit now, called Quiet Events that is doing lots of stuff. It’s run by a friend of mine named Will Petz. It’s huge, there’s a need for it. I think it’s something that will become more and more common and I think it’s great that more people are doing it.

Space comes to NYC! The Ibiza Migration Continues!

With the flip of an Instagram picture, Space revealed they’d be up and running in Manhattan by Thanksgiving. Unlike Sankeys, Space will opt for a more northern location, a stone’s throw from the citadel of Ibiza-based EDM, Pacha at 637 West 50th Street. There’s little to no information out about this new mega-club and yours truly is desperate to get more info on their opening headliners and any possible new residents. There’s a solid hankering for some additional options between Central Park and Houston Street from the dancing public and this will do nicely. I’m eager to see what this swell of supply will do to the choice your average Gothamite will have on a Friday or Saturday night when it comes to getting their groove on. (via Dancing Astronaut)

Sankeys comes to NYC! The British Are Coming!

It’s a good time to club in NYC. Sankeys, the shuttered venue in Manchester will be in Manhattan by Halloween. After 3 seasons in Ibiza, they’re crossing the pond. The new spot will be opening on 29 West 36th Street, right around Bryant Park & Herald Square, smack in the middle of midtown. There’s going to be some amazing sound and lights that are detailed on the site and press release for the tech-heads. The Halloween debut will feature Reboot, No Regular Play & My Favorite Robot. Slow Hands, the uncomparable DJ Sneak, Tanner Ross & Fur Coat (all the way from Venezuela) will round out the first weekend. The more big names the better. With the departure of District 36, Midtown is lacking a flagship spot and I know Sankeys will be chomping at the bit to show us Gothamites how Manchester does a proper party. Warehouse Project deaths prompt pilot testing program in the UK.

For the first time as far as I can tell, a club will be testing any drugs confiscated to check for bunk pills, bad molly, stepped-on cocaine, and other harmful substances. This is in response to the death of a 25 year old during a party in late Sept. in Manchester.

The results will be sent out via social media/text messages to the party-goers in the club, so they can ensure they don’t buy or take any bad drugs. While this seems like a no-brainer, this type of action would leave a club or party open to criminal liability under the RAVE Act here in the USA.

Here is to hoping something comes of this, and the authorities on this side of the pond come to their senses.

Prez, as he was called, was one of the saxophonists in Count Basie’s orchestra. If you don’t know who Count Basie is, educate the mind. Prez was known for both introducing a relaxed, chilled out tone in his melodies and for spreading much of the 1940’s hipster sub-culture based jargon that a lot of slang in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s grew out of. A Primer on Electro-Soul

Electro-soul is the name of the sub-genre halfway between trip-hop and UK Garage with heaping spoonfuls of blues, funk, disco, dubstep and bass pushed into it. Pretty Lights is one of the pioneers of this style, and he can be seen describing it 10 seconds into his appearance at Counterpoint Festival here:

This style has started to make it’s way into the public consciousness slowly over the last several years, and White Raver Rafting does a great job discussing its roots and some of its more dedicated players such as GRiZ, Gramatik, Break Science and Artifakts.
