Attend: NYC Gratitude & Evolver NYC Present AXIS MUNDI

(So, the whole “party of the month” thing started feeling a bit restrictive and obstinate, so I’ve decided to start a new segment called “Attend.” This will be a series of previews for events that you should…be at. Starting with one of the finest nights Gotham has to offer.)

It’s that time again! Gratitude is partnering with Evolver to lead an army of burners, builders, movers, shakers, candlestick makers, producers, riggers, bands, builders, VJs, healers & dancers to life for 18hours of classes, dancing, participation & performance. You read that right. Eighteen freaking hours. That’s 3x the party of any club or bar out there. Get with it. All afternoon, there will be classes on yoga, dance, art, environmental action and a bunch of other groovy stuff, hosted by Evolver. And then at 9 PM, there’s this guy and his friends.

So, take that, and add an epic story, with a cast of characters and a whole lot of stuff on fire. One of the things that really separates clubs/EDM from Burner culture is fire. You see explosions at huge festivals, and poi is showing up more and more, BUT no one burns like Burners. This show at 9 PM looks to be pretty bonkers and I’d imagine it’s a perfect reason to get there an hour earlier than you’d planned. Then after that insanity, there’s 3 different areas of sound, each with a retinue of Sonic Ronin that will blow minds.

Party Of The Month: Renegade Space Prom by Reformata

(UPDATE: The Kickstarter for the ICARUS art car is now live! Even if you can’t the party, you can still give to make sure a ridiculously awesome vehicle ends up playaside this summer!)

I took a break promoting events here because I wanted to make sure the focus was on music and dance culture related lolz, as opposed it looking like someone’s comping me every month. However, this month, there’s something very special happening and I can happily report most of my favorite people are going to be there. A retro futurist theme, Space Prom looks to be a costumed extravaganza that only NYC Burners can pull off. The King & Queen of the Renegade Space Prom will look to be galactic-levels of fabulous. Make sure to bust out your finest Summer threads for this Icarus fundraiser. It seems some friends of mine behind Icarus straight up want to create an ADC, or an Armored DJ Carrier. This looks somewhat bonkers when it comes to art car designs, and that’s saying a lot for the artistic space, considering what people have put out onto the Playa.

The tunes are going to be second to none, and really, something that should be totally expected at every party you attend. There is a giant pile of talent at this thing that you’re going to adore. So, here’s a pile of music you can use this week to get you hyped for Saturday.

Soul Mob has this minimized, relaxed vibe that still throbs with energy. I’m not really sure how this works, but I was definitely up late jamming on this mix earlier this week. It’s deceptively groovy. I’ve got a set by Coyoti from somewhere in the Middle East if I’m not mistaken.  If you like deep house with a global flavor to it, there’s a lot for you to enjoy here, as I’ve mentioned before.

Party Of The Month: Split Infinity by Soulcraft @ The Paper Box, 1/31!

Tickets: https://www.ticketfly.com/event/459429

The Paper Box has emerged as one of the go-to venues in Colonial Williamsburg these days (Yes, I’m referring to “East Williamsburg” or Bushwick as Colonial Williamsburg). When it comes to quality that hasn’t been discovered by the fist pumpers or bridge & tunnel crowd just quite yet, this place rages hard, even in the face of adversity. This means you better get your rear out to this party because in another couple of months, the magic of the secret will be out and it’ll be a whole different ballgame inside. SoulCraft hasn’ t been on my radar, but clearly this is because I’m getting blind & dead in my old age, as this is a cut and dry, to the point event. This collaboration between Ben Jammin’ & VJ Krunch is a force to be reckoned with. This partnership means the event will be a feast for the eyes and the ears. And speaking of the ears, it seems Been Jammin’ made some calls and brought out some surprisingly quality talent. The steampunk theme should be a “giant top hat with gears on it”-levels of fun, so grab that leather and those spectacles, it’s time to shake one’s steam-powered booty.

Party of the Month: Radical Inclusion

RADICAL poster FINAL

A lot of organizations have high minded compassionate principles but still breed exclusivity into their events. There are a lot of subtle things people can do to invite or not invite. The people behind Radical Inclusion have been done pretty much every single thing you could possibly do to be inviting, and I hope they’re rewarded for it. The event is bringing in some amazing talent from Philadelphia and matching it with Gotham luminaries, throbbing visuals and a “door experience” by EZ Almighty, another member of the Philly Bass aristocracy. I’m not experienced, but I can’t wait to be.

Lucky Cheng’s on the West Side near the park is a prime location for an event, especially when it comes to being accessible and not pissing off any one of the outer borough crossing crews. You can get to Queens, Jersey, and even the Bronx from here without too much trouble, though if you live in Staten Island, you’re still fucked and should re-evaluate your life choices. There is of course staggered ticket pricing so those of modest means can attend, while those that have a bit more in their pockets can support more right off the bat. Mantis Garden did some fabulous work at PEX Summer Fest this year and considering the work that has been done by those involved, I doubt any of us will be disappointed.

Party of the Month – Digital Love

Fresh off their success at the End of the World, this post-apocalypse 2013 is starting out hot for Digital Native. Working with another Burning Man camp called The Love Muscle they’re pushing out into their first big event of the year. I’m not really sure where they got all this talent, but the event is kinda drenched with it and I hope no one is selling plasma to pay for all of this awesome.

From an aural perspective, Digital Native never disappoints. Besides the ever-present deep house delight that is DJ Pony, another Digital Native stalwart B3AR will be making an appearance. His mix of Manhattan house & a dash of whatever he’s feeling at the moment, whether it’s electro-swing, some upbeat IDM or other surprises are always welcome, and he’s kept dance floors packed in at least three states by now. Joining him is the Sultan of sexy bomping base & breaks, Alex Funk, who is making the trip up from Baltimore to join Evan Collier, Dirtyfinger & Dopeshoes behind the decks. Dopeshoes drops a mix of house, R&b, disco & the occasional dancehall track, and while I can’t speak to the other two DJs, I have no doubt they’ll be able to melt my face with the best of them.

One of the things that keeps me coming back to Digital Native parties is their no-bullshit approach to art. Every offering they serve up has dollops of blinky, shiny painted/techy/fluffy goodness. The Centerpiece is rumored to be a luminescent heart the size of your average raver, but way less drunk/on ketamine, but probably just as bright and glowy in the dark. Add in some great body painters, old school lanterns, art car ridiculousness and live art creation by Craig Johnson II, there’s plenty of eye candy to match the sweet shit they’ll be putting out of the speakers. And just in case you were concerned, the door will be massaged by the deliciously luminous Guncle, who will put his website back up so I can link to it one of these days. The infamous BEX will be Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening’s festivities, who, besides being a general lady about town, is skilled in enough ways of performance, healing & dance that she’ll keep you distracted, occupied and enjoying yourself for hours.

Here’s all the details make sure not to miss it. My last party of the month recommendation was fucking sweet, and I bet you I’ll be 2 for 2 with Digital Native proving me right once again. And yes, it’s 21+, so no worries about being over-run by younglings when you’re just trying to have a good time.
