Midnight Music: Breakage ft. Burial – Vial [Future Garage/Burialstep]

More obscure Burial! I keep my promise that whenever I find anything Burial related that probably never saw release, you’d see it here. His signature mash of ambient sounds, maudlin garage beats & echoic vocal samples comes through once again. I’m not even sure when this was done, or if it’s officially been avowed as a Burial feature, but the internet says it was, and it kinda sounds like him, so it’s good enough for me! Burial will always sound like the first walk home from the ex’s house after you’ve been broken up with, especially if it’s raining after she did. And, even in this obscure feature, he managed to. Enjoy!

Ten Questions With Terry Gotham: Streamus Creator Sean Anderson!

(I’ve started using this Chrome extension called Streamus and I’ve not looked back. Dumping my huge YouTube playlists into a tab-less player that drops them all without ads & with less buffering. I was lucky enough to catch up with the coder of this amazing little extension, and you can find what we talked about below)
1. How did you come up with the Streamus idea?
Haha. I get asked this question a lot and I’m afraid the answer might be a bit lackluster. I have a decent soundsystem in my room and often would have friends over just to hangout, drink some beers, and listen to music. Most of the time the music would come from YouTube which was resulting in hundreds of bookmarks being created to keep track of enjoyable songs. I found myself becoming more and more frustrated having to manage so many bookmarks and was longing for a way to manage them. Being a software developer, I thought this problem was a bit silly to have, and decided to build something to solve my dilemma. Streamus is the manifestation of those efforts.
The name Streamus was a bit harder to come up with. Originally, the software was called SongBuzz, but I wasn’t stoked on that name. After months of deliberating, Streamus hit me. “Stream” + “Music” – “ic” (like ‘ew, ick!’) = Streamus. 🙂

Midnight Music: Burial – Feral Witchchild [Burial Dubplate]

I am super pleased to bring you this ridiculously obscure gem from Burial. I have no idea when it was released or if it’s an official edit or not. It could just be something a fan recorded off of a dj set or a podcast, or an original dubplate, as is reported where I found it. This is vintage Burial, that mix of UK garage, being dumped by your ex , dubstep and soft hip hop beats.

How To Make A Pop Hit By Brett Domino (I & II)

Laughing Squid tipped me off to this fantastic video on how to make a modern pop hit. I do enjoy the evolution of these things, and Brett Domino manages to capture the shifting target that is “whatever the hell do you people want” in their radio play. Now that everyone has heard the Jason Derulo song that he’s playing fast and loose with in the tune, check out this breakdown above. Brett is quite entertaining and the freshness of the process is lovely. Especially with the inspirational shout outs to Jennifer Lawrence. Bassoons are a welcome addition to any pop hit, just saying. He did a follow-up this weekend moving from the pop vocal hit to how to add sick choruses (what’s the plural of chorus?) to your amazing pop track. Kudos to you Mr. Domino. And now I feel like I just said goodbye to a Bond villain.

Mix of The Weekend: Kaskade’s EDC Las Vegas Live Set [American As Apple Pie!]

In case you weren’t one of the millions of unlucky people like myself who didn’t make it out to the Electric Sky for EDCLV, Kaskade once again comes to the rescue to round out your weekend. He dropped his hour long set at the Kinetic Cathedral, the largest stage ever constructed in the USA. Because Rotella said so. Good on you Kaskade for continuing to make this all happen and putting it out to the people. Can’t wait to see this music portal. (via EDMTunes, they’ve got the tracklist too, in case you’re as impressed as I am.)

An Epic Metal Tribute To Video Game Music.

I don’t toss around either the word “Epic” or “Metal” lightly, but I’ve gotta say, this is kind of amazingly both. Clocking it at over 17min, this Mass-based musician has been making the rounds on Kotaku and Dorkly while making a solid run for YouTube aristocracy. I think this video has a chance to get him there. It’s less than a week old and I’ve not seen it shared yet. Trust me, the covers of grossly relevant video games, done impeccably & brutally at times, will keep your attention.  Especially when he switches guitars and does other crazy tricks. Watch it, you’ll see, and if you don’t think both metal & vgmusic are related to the dance floor, then you’ve got a lot to learn about the histories of both 😀

Midnight Music: The US National Anthem In A Haunting Minor Key.

Who is this person and why aren’t they singing the soundtrack to Maleficent. This “Major to Minor” juxtaposition is gorgeous and needs to get copied a thousand times over. I’m serious. Minor keys don’t get used in Pop or EDM these days, in no small part because no one played Jazz or went to conservatory before becoming OMG Famous these days. When Afrojack can’t even read music, how the hell are we going to expect a songwriter or producer to know what a mixolydian mode or minor 5th is. Check this guy out because this kind of disruption is super easy to replicate, but super innovative and will definitely lead to more people experimenting with more chords and different tonal arrangements.

Baller Cat Mashed With Marijuana By Chrome Sparks

I don’t have time to catch the real gems that come off Reddit and post them here before they hit the blogs & Facebook, but this is fantastic and seems to have slipped under the radar. Someone showed us all that their girlfriend’s cat parties harder and better than we ever will. Plus Marijuana by Chrome Sparks is a wonderful song. (via Reddit)

Midnight Music: The Beatles – Because (The Zap Remix) [Psychedelic Chill]

For Throwback Thursday, I’m going all the way back to the Fab Four, but with a significantly more modern & eccentric twist. The Zap, a collaborative group between Raja Ram & Prometheus, pushed the limits of the original track in a lot of ways here. They know what they’re doing however, so sit back, and enjoy the psychedelic chill ride that you’re about to go on. Also, the pictures dropped into the video by the YouTube artist are great for WTF moments.
