Your Mars Volta Has Evolved Into Antemasque! Now With Drumming By Flea!

In a move zero people saw coming, not only are the founders of The Mars Volta back, they’ve brought Flea (yes, the RHCP member) with them! The new sound is called Antemasque and they’ve got two tracks out currently on their bandcamp page. Get at them below, there’s a rocking, alternative sound that I’ve not heard in many years. They’re busting out the gate and I couldn’t be more happy about it. Everything is better with two scoops of Volta founders Cedric & Omar. (via Exclaim.ca)

Midnight Music: Gorillaz – On Melancholy Hill (Indie Trip Hop)

So, if you read NME today, you heard that the Gorillaz singer & the guy who yelled “Wooo Hoo!” in Blur, Damon Albarn has enough material to make a new Gorillaz album. But he’s not. Because he hates kittens or something. On Melancholy Hill was one of my favorite tracks off the last album, so here it is for your Throwback Thursday, and Mr. Albarn better get to finishing those tracks so the Gorillaz fans worldwide don’t have to turn into an angry mob.

Party of the Month: Verboten Presents Lee Burridge

This month, I’m happy to report that Verboten has settled into its new 10,000 sq. ft. space in BK and they’ve been able to bring the raw awesome I remember from their events all over the city back home for us. The space has all the bells and whistles you’d expect, no VIP area, and is one of the first venues in the city to sport a no-tolerance policy on harassment. From their site:

Verboten is a pro-woman company, run by strong women and the men & women who love them. Harassment in any form will not be tolerated. If you are the victim of any unwanted speech, treatment, or physical abuse, please speak with any staff member and that person will be removed.

I really could not be pleased with language like that coming out of Verboten. I’ve been watching clubs & bars throw up their hands and say “boys will be boys” for years here in NYC, and I’m hoping Verboten is first in a long line of clubs that add this type of policy. Headlining next Friday is Lee Burridge, one of the top deep/tech house DJs in the world right now. Check out his Lightning In A Bottle Mix below if you don’t believe me. Keep reading 85 minutes from now, after he takes you on a magical journey.

Why Ultra Music Festival needs a new approach

This is something I’ve been hoping happens for years. Half a dozen advocacy & harm reduction groups are coming together to fight on behalf of you, the dancer/attendee. When the festivals throw up their hands and pretend there’s nothing they can do about kids making bad decisions, it seems it’s fallen to us, the attendees to look out for each other and educate one another while enjoying ourselves. I’ve taken the pledge. Have you?

By just about every objective marker this year’s edition of Ultra Music Festival in Miami was a massive success. Over 165,000 people attended the event. The 2014 Ultra Live Stream of the event had 9.7 million views from more than 190 countries. Financially the festival was thought to bring in about 200 million dollars of revenue for the city of Miami.

However, the festival also had a number of significant problems. First, a security guard was left in serious medical condition after being trampled during a gatecrashing incident. Then, one of the attendees, 21-year-old Adonis Espoco, died after being taken out from the festival when thought to be too drunk and left in a car to “sleep it off.” In addition, over 80 people were arrested and 153 people were treated by paramedics during the event.

Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff both immediately called for Ultra…

Barclays Is Getting A Green Roof?

Gizmodo mentioned the WSJ report that the Barclays Brooklyn Arena is getting a brown/green roof over it. This is kind of a stunning admission considering the idea was proposed & then tossed 6 years ago. Though, while the WSJ doesn’t believe it, I definitely agree with Gizmodo that the primary purpose for the roof has nothing to do with providing a High Line or a green space near Atlantic Avenue. Barclays is loud. As anyone who has moved through the neighborhood it’s in while a party happens can tell you, shit is not ok all the time. I’m all for bomping parties and making the experience as awesome as possible, but like, let’s be respectful. Especially with new developments in the neighborhood every day, it’s just going to get worse. Just imagine if Borgore or Skrillex sold out the stadium. It would vibrate the subway.

Midnight Music: ZHU – Paradise Awaits (Soulful Future Garage)

If you haven’t heard of ZHU, don’t feel bad, this one came out of absolutely nowhere. ZHU has released a few previous remixes anonymously and eventually revealed himself after a particularly sick Outkast cover that I tweeted about around my birthday. ZHU has a great handle on a dozen different genres and his mastery lends itself to a vibey, r&b-infused garage track that keeps chugging along but gives off the impression that it’s cool, it just doesn’t think it’s cool cause it’s spending all of its time being cool. Now that I gave you the least descriptive sentences in recent memory, hit up the track and go mob his soundcloud & twitter pages. (tip from JLeo of EDMTunes)

Midnight Music: Lee Haslam – Music Is The Drug (Old School Trance)

Tonight, we’re going back to the time when Formula 51 was a movie & Samuel L. Jackson still had both eyes. This absolute gem of a trance track comes from Lee Haslam, an institution in his own right. I think I discovered this track when I was actually in . The punch of the trance chords explodes like sonic fireworks after a particularly droll but delightful sample of Samuel L. Jackson discussing the best drug ever. The sample is hilarious in its reminder of how Hollywood doesn’t understand both rave & drug culture. This is true, classic trance in all its glory. Put this into your face then go listen to trapstep and tell me which one makes you want to dance (Note: Grinding does not count for these purposes, so no yelling at me about how Diplo is awesome).

Courtney Love Has Plans For A Movie, Musical & Documentary About Kurt Cobain.

FACT dropped this ruinous piece of news last week. From the NME interview they quote:

“Both Frances and I have thought long and hard and agreed that if we can reach up to the highest shelf and select a team of the greatest and most respected writers, producers and directors, then a Broadway musical is very likely to happen,”

For those of us keeping score at home, Frances is their daughter. Just…stop. Please. You’re wealthy & able to care for your daughter and with proper financial management, will never need to lift a finger again. This is unneeded & largely heinous. Let the dead rest.

Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) Provides Guest Vocals For “Game Of Moans” (Not That Kind).

Now that the new season has started, GoT mania is at a fevered pitch. Just in case you needed a little bit more of the Stark family in your life, BBC Radio 1 has created the “Game of Moans.” This 5min spoof piece features Sansa & Matt Edmondson (not a character from Season 4) just complaining about first world problems. It never gets any more elaborate or complicated than that, but it’s amusing as hell nonetheless. Plus, I bet your GoT-obsessed friends probably haven’t consumed this piece of media yet, so get the scoop on them. And also, anyone who can rhyme being annoyed with people who don’t know how to use their/there/they’re get infinite props from me. So Matt, please find your props in NYC if/when you make it over to Gotham 😀
