Kanye West Beat Cds from 2001 Discovered!
Kind of a crazy story here. Apparently someone was cleaning out their garage & stumbled on some old (read 2001) mixtapes from Kanye West. And we do mean old, like markers on a cdr old. This kind of stuff may not appear to all of my readers, but if you’re into hip hop beats & the stuff that made Kanye famous before he engaged Mecha Douche 3000 mode, you might like this. The first CD is in the YouTube video above, & the 2nd one can be found here. Don’t say I never gave you anything :D(via Stamp The Wax)
JIMEK Conducts A Hip Hop Orchestra.
10 minutes of orchestrated & expertly scored hip hop, conducted by JIMEK, a composer who is pretty damn familiar with some of the best hip hop of the last 30 years. Wu Tang, Missy, Dre, and so many more. A whole lot of kudos to the Polish National Radio Orchestra being good sports about this. Gotta say, I prefer this to a lot or over-orchestration that happens when people try and act cute. This is well executed, so kudos to The Awesomer for the tip.
Big Bird + Big Pun = A Big Yellow Player
Some magnificent bastard named Benjamin Roberts mashed up Big Bird from Sesame Street with Big Pun from THE STREETS. Each time someone posts a video of Muppets rapping, an angel gets its wings. That probably just means giving angels Red Bull these days, you know, what with the economy. But honestly, this is cleverly edited, and short enough that it doesn’t get gimmicky or overwrought. 68 seconds of kid friendly comedy gold. This is the same guy who did Rick & Morty + Eminem & Earl Sinclair rocking Hypnotize. And if you haven’t seen those, they’re below. Because I like you and think you deserve nice things. All of this is made of win, and you have Ben Roberts to thank for it. So go do that, any time really.
One String Band Kills It. Nkhata Bay, From Malawi
This is 3 minutes of musical & technical excellence. This crazy performance involves a homemade drum & what might as well be a steel contra ukelele. Picked this up off Metafilter, the original from 2010 is a powerful example of what one person can create with literally less than a dollar in performance equipment. This kind of traditional use of modern materials to make something totally new is something we don’t see every day. I am certainly not up on Malawi beats, but this is a dance party & a half all by itself. Get grooving on this to get back into it after the long weekend.
Baby Freddie Mercury In Zanzibar In 1947. Happy Monday!
Who knew Freddie Mercury had a nanny who probably taught him the secrets of the earth huh? Like, she must rock at it because he’s happy as hell. Also, Zanzibar. Because that’s a real place. But yes, Freddie Mercury was actually born Farrokh Bulsara amd he was born in Zanzibar. Bust that out next time someone who only likes Queen because of Wayne’s World starts going on about We Are The Champions. Via r/OldSchoolCool, home to a pretty impressive selection of photography, both of regular & intensely famous people.
Cattle Rap Is My New Favorite Thing.
This is everything good & right on the internet right here. Someone got the brilliant idea to take cattle auctioneers & drop hip hop beats under them. While this seems like one of the higher ideas to come out of a college basement, the two videos I’ve linked are some of the better examples. The video above is the high water mark for the genre, a fun little vid that came out in 2014. The one below is the original that really got the movement (lol) going. This kind of “hey, this is a wacky combination, I’m bored, here’s my offering” thing that’s part of the internet now makes for some truly dopey shit. Enjoy this one & shake Monday off. If you’re super into the track, you can get it on Bancamp here as well.

Nation, DC Superclub, A Photographic Memorial.
I spent a couple of years haunting this nightclub just inside of the DC city limits. It was the places I saw The Prodigy, Astrix & plenty of other stupendous artists. Crippled by the RAVE Act, the previous super club (I’m talking 5 floors open on big nights) was still alive by the time I got there, with massive events & 2-3 concurrent areas of sound at even the smallest event. This was one of the great ones folks, and it was bulldozed to create the parking lot for The Nationals (baseball team) parking lot. Recently this set of pictures of Nation popped up on my feeds, so I wanted to take the time to share a little bit of my own history. This place was undeniably a pillar of the MD/DC/Mid-Atlantic dance music & rave community for years. Lots of places come & go, but a couple are special. Nation was special. To me anyway. Check out the whole set and show Travis Payne some love, as his Flickr stream is actually pretty legit.
