I’m not sure if I’ve posted this before, but even if I have, for Throwback Thursday, I give you the irrepressible Flux Pavilion. His remix of Jamiroquai’s classic “Blue Skies” is massive, melancholic and triumphant in its sorrows. Just what you need for mid-January.

EP of the Week: Sierra Leone Remixes
Mt. Eden is one of my absolute favorite artists and almost 2 years after downloading & playing the hell out of their original tracks, they’re finally releasing some of their sick nasty goodness for purchase. Sierra Leone is a gorgeous track that was one of the first that proved that dubsteppy beats could be chilled and lovely in my mind. Saw these cats live at Webster Hall and they did not disappoint in the least. The remixes, from the likes of Araabmuzik and Tommie Sunshine do not disappoint. TaKu adds some fun garage’y beats to round out the EP. Tight, to the point and a great little reminder that Mt. Eden kills it. Can’t wait for their next NYC show.
Earworm of the Month: Daymanstep by Joman
So, I have to admit, I’ve not seen enough It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and this track has decided it for me. I’ll be putting this stuff into my face. If for no other reason that I can find more shit like this. Daymanstep is a brutal & hilarious dubstep remix of a clip from the “Dayman” episode of Always Sunny. The wobble is on point, the sample usage is perfect and the auto-tune for the vocal work could not be better. I cannot emphasize enough how pleased I was when I was introduced to this piece after someone posted this clip from the show:
One of my favorite people Ť¥gēŗ£ÏŁŸ, dropped this track on me, and I cannot thank her enough. It’s been on repeat, sometimes for way too long than I’m willing to disclose publicly. Get at the producer who made it, DJ Joman, because there’s some quality there and the non-Always Sunny-related tracks are quite entertaining as well. For the lazy among you, his ish is listed below. I know I’m like a thousand years late to the daymanstep party, but it’s new to me, probably new to you and fantastic.
EP of the Week: Phutureprimitive “Searching for Beauty in the Darkest Places Pt. 1”
http://phutureprimitive.bandcamp.com/album/searching-for-beauty-in-the-darkest-places-pt-1
It is really hard to get away with essentially all of what Phutureprimitive does. Both psy & dubstep are things that can be done from well to vomit-inducing poorly. Released literally today, this first of a 2-part release that will eventually be a full CD is an exceptional example of how to do an array of things right. Not only is the psy-step fantastic, but the glitch and general bassy feel is accentuated by some fantastic vocals by Jillian Ann, Rain & Lila Rose. This specific choice of talent ensures that no facet of the 5-track salvo of awesome disappoints.
DJ Ayesha Adamo Drops EDM-Related Knowledge
For many of our electronica-related neophytes, the sheer volume of genres is mind-boggling. Whether you’ve spent years hitting up parties or if this is your first weekend out of doors, it’s easy to have no idea what you’re listening to. Thankfully, there are amazingly talented DJs who are here to help. Ayesha Adamo is a multi-talented beat Goddess who I’ve had the pleasure of working with a few times in the past and has been cleverly picked up by Alternet to create a run-down of the 11 most popular genres that are happening right now. House, Techno, Breaks, Dubstep, Nu Disco/Indie Dance, Electro (House), Prog House, Trance, Tech House, Trip-Hop & Witch House. I’m not sure the last one should be on the list but I’ll give it to her because she knows her shit.
Check it out, and the next time some fool is all “zomg wut r dubstepz?” you can just forward them this and get back to listening to your psy-trap-core compilations. Check out more of her cool stuff right here:

Ten Questions with Terry Gotham: Seven Lions
1. How would you define the genre Seven Lions currently occupies? Because “A giant made of clouds” is kind of confusing when I tell my friends about you.
That’s actually really tough because I don’t like to just do one genre. So, I mean, I can say where I come from. Like, I like trance a lot, I like industrial a lot. I didn’t like dubstep too much at first and then I slowly got into it. I like a little bit of everything to be honest, so I try and make a little bit of everything, if that makes sense. I try and keep my style on what I want to do, so I have dubstep songs, glitch-hop, electro, trance.
Earworm of the Month: “Empty Space” by xKore (ft. Ooo)
As February the month of birthday, heart-shaped chocolates and gray wintry mix comes to a close, I wanted to drop this tune that I absolutely cannot get enough of. The track on the label’s page has gotten a paltry number of hits, and it seems the time has not yet come for this sound. However, I could not give any fewer fucks.
The track begins majestically but cuts into some choppy wobble immediately, accompanied by some Bjork-y vocals that seem to match strangely. This is one of the increasing number of post-step (yes, I know, but please, go with me here) tracks that have stopped emphasizing the dub-steppy line (that we all know and make fun of), in favor of social justice-oriented/weird physics/confusing radio broadcast vocals in addition to a host of other sounds. This is evocative of the genre putting on big boy pants and realizing that you don’t get to play concerts to 10,000 people on the EDM equivalent of the whammy bar forever. This is also VERY good for listeners. As the song proves at 1:45.
The soaring vocals, the dubby under-current and the ebbing in and out of the track scream soundtrack and the lyrics provide a lovely little double-edged sword. The concept that the human being is 99% empty space is a factual truth on the atomic scale and profoundly depressing or uplifting depending on your mood. Same with the rest of the lyrics. Which, frankly, is great. Because the music will kinda go whichever way you are too. The beat can be menacing or empowering. And this is why I am excited to see what the hell 2013 brings when it comes to the post-Skrillex universe of UK & American Dubstep producers. Shit’s gonna be fun.
State of the Union Address ad uses Bass Music?!!?
Did I miss a meeting? 15 seconds in the graphics & enhanced presentations are mixed in with some dubby bass music. Obama’s administration is advertising the State of The Union address with dubstep.
I don’t even know how to feel about this. Will this further cement dubstep’s transition to commercialization? Is this the administration just trolling conservatives who like EDM? Who is responsible for this and why is it a FREE DOWNLOAD? If you’re reading this, leave a comment as to what your thoughts are. I’m stumped.
