Midnight Music: Robert Miles – Children (Konect ft. Jay Cosmic Remix) [Chill Trap]

Well, can’t say I saw this one coming. This chilled out trap remix of Children almost excuses the entirety of the minivan trance movement that Children ushered forth (I call it Minivan trance because Children got so popular, DJ Ishkur called the track something that “your mom listened to in her minivan). The remix puts the tune in perspective and brings the energy down to where it matches the actual melody and chords used. This is something I could see in a Cashmere Cat set, or even a deadmau5 set when he was feeling particularly trollish. The “trance breakdown” at 3:15 is great, and reminds you they actually listened to the song a billion times like we all did if you were a fan of EDM (or electronica as we called it) back in the late 90’s.

I’m a huge fan of the Chill Trap these days, a lot of deep underground production going on, with young DJs & producers really walking the line between festival appropriate & chilled/downtempo vibes. Watch this space for more of that stuff of course. And it’s a Free DL so I don’t want to hear any complaining! Hit up www.dropthebassline.com for more as well.

Midnight Music: OLWIK – Taking Over (ft. Alexa Lusader) [Prog House]

Ok, the kids are getting younger and younger, while I’m just sitting here grooving on it. OLWIK is exploding out of the gate after killing it with this Pendulum remix earlier this month, he’s pushing some massive tunes out from his home in Gothenburg, Sweden. There is a complexity to the sound that I’ve been missing for the entirety of the big room fad. This combination of a big room sound with a progressive vibe has been in short supply since the disappearance of the Swedish Fish Mafia, and it looks like it’s up to the younglings to bring it back. Alexa Lusader provides some glittering vocal support that makes the track scream “PLAY THIS ON THE MAINSTAGE FUCKERS!” No Copyright Sounds has made a great draft pick getting this kid on their roster. Can’t wait to see him live in NYC! Hit him up on soundcloud here.

Midnight Music: The Weeknd – Often (Kygo Remix) [Sex Bass]

Great googly moogly. Kygo has picked up a tune by The Weeknd, resulting in one of the pantie droppiest tracks of 2014. I’m not sure how to communicate how important it is that you grab this FREE download immediately. The Weeknd has continued his ascent into the realm of spine-tingling vocal work, with Kygo exploring the uncharted realms between house and R&B. This remix is a must listen, especially for anyone who wants to know where R&B and the more soulful end of hip hop is headed. The track flows, with (h/t to EDMTunes for the first push)

Midnight Music: Pierce Fulton [Chilled Vibes]

This one has been on rotation for the last week, but I wanted to take some time to write a little ditty up about it. This gorgeous chilled tune almost shimmers in its sun-drenched grooves. There’s a quiet euphoria to this downtempo tune that is hard to match without having gone to school for Pro Tools. The synth work & mixdown are impeccable, with the build two minutes in pulling you along and forcing a smile on your face. I’ve never heard of Pierce Fulton before, but I’m so glad EDMTunes made sure I saw this track. The 2:44 break re-emphasizes the positive vibes the track is working with, so make sure hit up this Brooklyn DJ and enjoy the summer while it still lasts.

Midnight Music: Lorde – Tennis Court (Flume Remix) [Clouds Made Of Bounce]

Well, in light of the Major Lazer remix that came to light yesterday, I just wanted to be THAT guy, and remind everyone about the other remix of Tennis Court. Flume just sold out 3 nights in NYC, and if you don’t have a clear idea why, just put this tune into your ear holes. Flume has production that is unrivaled, with massive remixes hitting and his name climbing the festival bill very quickly. And if this tune doesn’t convince you, check out his remix of Gold by Chet Faker. I swear, the Aussies are combining their powers Power Ranger style. This is some potent, soulful & massive stuff.

Midnight Music: Dr Meaker ft. Sian Evans – Right Back [Drum & Bass]

Tonight, I’m proud to announce Circus Records is putting out a nice little Drum & Bass tune by Dr Meaker. This has an indulgent old school feel with some potent supporting chords. The Circus sound definitely comes out, with the track seeming at home in the faster sections of a Flux Pav set. Sian Evans adds some swaying vocals that are in sync with the pacing. It’s hard to find faults with the release. It’s proper Drum & Bass, not liquid, not psy, not anything crazy. Just your bread and butter D&B that makes me think of hoodies and camo. Not heavy enough to add the gas masks though. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves now 😀

EP Of The Week: MitiS – Touch

The Opening Part 2 kicks, with some serious high energy grooves. The scintillating production values of MitiS shine once again, with this bloopy anthemic tune to open his EP. The Original Mix tease means there’s remixes on the way, which makes me warm & fuzzy inside. Touch gets at the real signature sound that MitiS brings to the fore. There’s this triumphant synth work that picks you up and never lets you down. The tune is infectious and deceptively dubby. The vocal mix, featuring Shana J. Munson adds another excellent layer to the massive tune. It picks the energy up and combines it with some fantastic lyrical work. This is some festival ish right here. I’d mistake it for a tune off of A State of Trance if I didn’t know better.

Namaste, Alvida is a translation of Hello, Goodbye in Hindi, also the title of a particularly complex and delightful tune on the EP. The massive dubstep combined with the chilled out elements that MitiS is at most home with work splendidly. There’s a bit of a Drum & Bass feel in the second half of the tune that’s wonderful. Life is a slower, more massive tune that, much like life, you don’t start to appreciate until you’re about 30-40% of the way through it. Drearily euphoric, with amassive front end and a build that blew me away. The breakdown reminds me of some of the most victorious guitar work I’ve ever heard. Forget the Wyld Stallions, MitiS will bring peace in our time. Breezes rounds out the EP with a rambling, drum & bass tune that pulls everything together nicely. I’d love to see an acoustic version of this, because I bet it’s a blast on the piano. Hit up the EP below and show the dude some love. Trust me, he’s one of the great ones, you’ll see if you don’t yet.

Midnight Music: Burial – Feral Witchchild [Burial Dubplate]

I am super pleased to bring you this ridiculously obscure gem from Burial. I have no idea when it was released or if it’s an official edit or not. It could just be something a fan recorded off of a dj set or a podcast, or an original dubplate, as is reported where I found it. This is vintage Burial, that mix of UK garage, being dumped by your ex , dubstep and soft hip hop beats.

Midnight Music: Pendulum – The Island (OLWIK Bootleg) [Progressive Jam]

The producers are getting younger and younger. For this week’s motivational midnight music, get a load of this 17 year old out of Sweden. The reworking of the amazing Pendulum track “The Island” is a masterful, driving progressive house anthem that I’m kicking myself for not discovering sooner. The euphoria is strong with this kid and I’m hoping that nothing gets in his way. Because seriously, I’ve been waiting for the pendulum (you see what I did there?) to swing away from the big room electro crapola into some potent melodic. And this guy’s got the chops to lead the charge.

Midnight Music: Dido – White Flag (Collin McLoughlin Remix) [Pteropus-Step/D&B]

The last time I mentioned Collin on this blog was for his stupefyingly good deep house mix. Before that I was ranting on twitter about his vocal dubstep tracks that blew us all out of the water. Last week he dropped a liquid drum & bass remix of White Flag by Dido. Yes, that Dido. Di Freaking “Dear Slim, I wrote you but you still ain’t calling” do. Not only did he provide his own vocal recording for the remix, but the production is on point. The potent drum and bass chops that none of us new he had, shine through. There’s a sensibility about what to take away and what to keep, the mark of an artist who can’t help but go places. The build around 2:15 is silky smooth, and there’s a dude singing Dido. Because fuck your gender roles bro. The tune is dancey without being overbearing or at all harsh. So much to like here, and this continues to prove that Collin McLoughlin isn’t actually human, but just some Jedi producer sent back in time to usher in the era of the Wyld Stallions or something.
