Pussy Riot Attacked, Temporarily Blinded In Nizhny Novgorod, Russia

It is clear that the attackers acted with the approval of the Nizhny Novgorod FSB, located nearby. However, we will still go to the prison today, so they have beaten us in vain, absolutely in vain.

–Masha Alyokhina

We will go to the prison, despite the fact that the local police, “titushki” — the hooligans — and their bosses do not like it.

–Nadia Tolokonnikov

There’s not much to say. I hope they’re protected, and I will continue to take my hat off to them and cheer on their fight for those who need it. They’re still going to travel to the prison where convicts are treated like slaves (much like they’re treated here). Especially as Putin stares down the world, they stand, and literally fight. The thugs were wearing ribbons remembering WWII. Supporting the troops indeed. (via Huff Po)

Midnight Music: Recognise – Fred V & Grafix

Fred V & Grafix do some great work, so I’m kicking myself that I didn’t get a chance to listen to this track until a few days ago. Two weeks old and not a yammer about it? For shame Mr. Gotham, for shame. The duo are really honing their craft and the production value on this tune is off the charts. There’s this rich, lush feeling that tugs the vocals along, which are a perfect compliment to the beats. I’ll have some non-D&B soon. Maybe. I promise.

Midnight Music: Let It Go – DJ Rashad

So happy to bring you this pure bliss from DJ Rashad, released last year. The smooth, ebbing flow of the beat combined with a mantra we could all do well to practice more often. Slick UK D&B from DJ Rashad, who recently almost set the Museum of Natural History on fire with his set along with mixmaster DJ Spinn. Yea, DJs are spinning on Friday nights at museums in NYC, big whoop wanna fight about it? Let the tune play out and relax, let some things go, even just for the duration of the song.

Arby’s Donates $44k for Pharrell’s Hat.

So, as inspiration to all of us to never let a good joke die, Arby’s has taken their Grammy jokes about Pharrell all the way to the auction block. Pharrell set up his awesome Diglet hat (whose true origins/purpose were discussed here earlier) to be auctioned for charity and Arby’s traight up bought it. Not only has a great charity gotten some loot, but Arby’s got a cool 10,000 retweets out of it. Can’t say I buy the ROI but then again, I didn’t come up with the Roast Turkey Ranch & Bacon sandwich, so what do I know. (via FACT)

Sweet Child O’ Mine – Guns & Roses As 1920’s Jazz

She may not have eyes of the bluest skies, but this cover of Sweet Child of Mine by Miche Braden, Scott Bradlee & the Postmodern Jukebox is fantastic. This Jazzy rendition of the bro-rock classic is a gorgeous reinterpretation of the hit and in my opinion, could seriously motivate me to hang out in bars where the original is played. Plus the woo girls dressed in furs & flapper clothes might be a little more fun and a little less cold this time of year.

Midnight Music: Katy B

To celebrate Katy B hitting #1 in the UK with her new album Little Red, I decided to put up one of the tunes from it, Crying for No Reason. This is everything a video should be, especially with the chops that Katy B has. I hope she gets her fair share of success and some exposure in the USA to boot, because her ability to blend vocals & beats is fantastic and needs to start being injected in the USA pop engine ASAP. It’s not easy to beat both Ellie Goulding & London Grammar, but there you have it folks. (via Mixmag)

Three “Royals” Covers You Need To See.

First up, the African Tribal Masquerade cover by Alex Boye’, which was done after purchasing paint & a wreath from Wal-Mart. A wonderful take on the original and something authentic from someone authentic. Ain’t nothing wrong with that.

Next, Puddles Pity Party. No that’s not the name of an episode of Adventure Time, it’s a 7ft tall clown with the voice of a tragic angel. He swung by Sleep No More last week and I couldn’t be happier that the guy is slowly becoming a name on the internets. The performance is perfect & the Pagliacci invocations are wonderful.

Finally, Pentatonix have whipped up a lovely acapella version for your listening pleasure. This perky little group deserves as much exposure as they can get, especially considering how awesome their sweet Daft Punk medley was a while ago. Check these 3 out, then forward them to your friends who think they’ve seen everything 😉
