Tonight, for throwback Thursday, I present a duo of tracks using the pinnacle of sample work, taken from one of the first films to use actual audio. Mr. Chaplin was born today, and because of that, I’m picking two tracks showcasing “The Great Dictator” one of Charlie’s only speaking roles and one responsible for one of the best soliloquys in all of cinema. Above, Arkasia provides a stunning orchestral dubstep track that features the tune prominently & below, I’ve got one of my favorite MitiS tunes. Mr Suicide Sheep continues to provide YouTube portal goodness and allows me to use the tracks as a proof that you should celebrate the birth of one our most astonishing actors & comedians. Because if you can listen to these tracks without being touched, I’d check for a pulse. You may not be human anymore.

Midnight Music: Neon Trees – Sleep With A Friend (The Chainsmokers Remix) [Anthem House]
I was lucky enough to see The Chainsmokers when they played a warehouse party in Brooklyn about 8 months ago and yes, they absolutely killed it, so be jealous. Their star was moving along at a brisk pace until it went supernova with #SELFIE. Now, I’m hearing co-workers & friends quoting the lyrics while they complain about the culture. Love it or hate it, they moved the needle and started a conversation both about the idea of selfies and the people who take them. They dropped a new remix today and I have to say, you’re going to hear a lot of these guys this summer.
The tune has anthem written all over it and I’m going to count the minutes until I hear sets with multiple Chainsmokers tracks in them by DJs globally. The remix has a potent injection of energy while not saturating you with cheese. The lyrics & original vocal work are used appropriately and not stamped out by the big room sound like you’d expect. Expect to hear this a lot, and be glad it’s this and not the 86 inferior clones of this sound currently sitting in various charts on Beatport.(via EDMTunes)
Midnight Music: Gorillaz – On Melancholy Hill (Indie Trip Hop)
So, if you read NME today, you heard that the Gorillaz singer & the guy who yelled “Wooo Hoo!” in Blur, Damon Albarn has enough material to make a new Gorillaz album. But he’s not. Because he hates kittens or something. On Melancholy Hill was one of my favorite tracks off the last album, so here it is for your Throwback Thursday, and Mr. Albarn better get to finishing those tracks so the Gorillaz fans worldwide don’t have to turn into an angry mob.
Midnight Music: Lee Haslam – Music Is The Drug (Old School Trance)
Tonight, we’re going back to the time when Formula 51 was a movie & Samuel L. Jackson still had both eyes. This absolute gem of a trance track comes from Lee Haslam, an institution in his own right. I think I discovered this track when I was actually in . The punch of the trance chords explodes like sonic fireworks after a particularly droll but delightful sample of Samuel L. Jackson discussing the best drug ever. The sample is hilarious in its reminder of how Hollywood doesn’t understand both rave & drug culture. This is true, classic trance in all its glory. Put this into your face then go listen to trapstep and tell me which one makes you want to dance (Note: Grinding does not count for these purposes, so no yelling at me about how Diplo is awesome).
Midnight Music: Daughter – Medicine (Sound Remedy Remix)
MrSuicideSheep has continued to dominate the YouTube music space and last month he threw out a remix of the first song I pushed out as the very first Midnight Music post, so I am happy to bring you back to it. Medicine was a raw & intense piece done by Daughter, a singer I’ve written about here a few times. Sound Remedy has swooped in and produced a stunning remix of her wistful track, maintaining the melange of melancholy and musing. They add dollop of electro & synth on the top to give it some flair. Very different but just as good as the first Midnight Music.
Midnight Music: Miike Snow – Silvia (Robotberget Remix)
This delightful, energetic & synthed out remix of Silvia by Miike Snow is a surprisingly quality issuance. The original’s vocals are knob-fiddled with to great effect by Robotberget. This is a track I first discovered a few years ago, but I keep coming back to it. The animation was a project done by Daniel Teeny on YouTube, which is wonderful as well. The introduction piano cues & strings showcase the nuance of the animation, and I’ve gotta say, if iTunes gave me 3d frequency graphs, I might consider using it. Enjoy these 8 minutes of potent vocal symphonic house in the 125bpm range.
Midnight Music: Nicolas Jaar & Sasha Spielberg Present Avalanche
Nicolas Jaar has teamed up with Sasha Spielberg to create a potent 7 minutes of ethereal but persistent re-workings of Avalanche. There’s a slow, plodding, but potent & organic feel to the track that blends with Daughter Spielberg’s soft vocals. This is an interesting & playful collaboration that’s good for pre-club drinks or a Sunday. Enjoy! (via FACT)
Midnight Music: Galimatias & Sorrow – Subside
Midnight Music: Ruben Haze & Dirty South Joe ft. Example – One Way Ticket
I’m super pleased this collaboration happened. Example has been on my radar for a few years now, carving out a respectable name for himself in the UK & worldwide. I give mad props to any male vocalist that can hang in the dance game, and he does quite well. Dirty South has done some amazing work & always kills it when he gets behind the decks at PACHA NYC. I’ve not heard of Ruben Haze before, but I won’t forget the name after this tune. There’s a serious Red Hot Chili Peppers vibe on the tune, but it inflects into this potent, but never oppressive indie-infused sound. I know that sounds kind of silly considering the fact that I’ve now used “indie” and “Pacha” in the same paragraph, but check it out and you’ll see what I’m talking about. I’m definitely looking forward to this EP now, as indietronica continues to be my jam. Kudos to This Song Is Sick for the tip.
Midnight Music: Have A Nice Day by World Order
I am going to keep posting these guys until they’re as big as Victorian School Girl costumes are in Japan. Genki Sudo continues to blow minds and generate camera phone snaps across Japan. This time, there’s a lot more crowd interaction in the movement & scenes with guest stars Akihabara, or AKB48, while they perform and explore the region of the same name. So yes, they’re hanging out with Akihabara in Akihabara, because Japan. The song is upbeat, catchy & starry-eyed like only Genki Sudo can be. Can this please be a live act somewhere on this side of the planet please? kthxbai
