This one caught me by surprise. 3min in, ethereal power ballad build, with notes of Disclosure & funky garage-styled vibes. The break keeps you on your toes and should be in the armamentarium (totally a real word!) of any Brooklyn DJ who is spinning irregular house these days. Hometown Fire: The Adversary
Since this came on at the exact time I needed it during Gratitude, I’ve been meaning to update everyone on The Adversary. I first covered this sound almost a year ago, and he’s been fighting the good fight. The combination between live sounds & electronic elements is perfect for what people are looking for in Brooklyn these days, and the video is a whole lot of fire & attitude. The video work is well done and the bass is fun as hell to groove to. Ritual Dream is one of the tracks off a new EP that’s pretty quality, so I’ll be discussing my ambient thoughts about it below of course 😉
Surprisingly funky & rock filled, with a voice that needs to get more attention. The combination of strong driving chords & the sly lyrical work create a memorable sound that I’d probably expect at a bar where people cooler than me hung out.
Top Of The World pushes in a little deeper into the realm of Indie, but remains a stompy, soulful tune. The synth, reverb & delay are used appropriately here, and it gives me hope for how he’s progressing, as this is definitely more technically complicated than the EP he released last year. The vocal work is more daring, while the ideas are getting bigger and bigger. Kudos to this guy for dreaming big and swinging hard.
We Need makes me wistful thinking about a group called InnerPartySystem. The more artists that try to straddle this “live vocal + garage house bass” style, the happier I will be. This is what I assume my night will sound like if I ever have to chase a quirky exotic photographer through a crowded series of bars & parties. Or at least, what the cut montage of it would be of course.
Yoshimi is an interesting track that I’d mentioned before, but it’s quite nice. It’s essentially a Boten Anna that doesn’t suck (for anyone into Basshunter). There’s a streak of alternative vocals here with some fun anthemic guitar work that are totally welcome here. Check the thing out & hit him up if he’s in town. It’s a fun show, trust that if he earned a slot at Gratitude 2x in a row, he’s doing something right. The Adversary is performing at the Museum of Sex for their “Sex on Fifth Avenue” series on Nov. 1 at 11pm. Get tickets here since you’ve obviously been won over by this feature 😉

Mix Of The Week: Nu:Tone’s FABRIC Mix!
Nu:Tone is the most underrated Hospital Records selectro. This producer has created great tunes and he’s got a new album coming out, so he’s started to make the rounds getting word out. Thankfully Fabric picked him up for this, and we’ve got a wonderful half hour of funky d&b from him. The mix is quality start to finish, with some particularly delightful bits between the 12 & 20 minute marks. Great thing to put on while driving, pregaming or just jamming out cleaning the house. The Billon – Special remix he ends the mix out with, is not only one of his own originals, it freaking rocks. Check out the tunes and get ready for the album, Future History. I’m going to try and get my hands on it ASAP to figure out which tracks are going to get added to my daily listening Hospital playlist. I know Metaphor 6000 is already on it. If you don’t believe me, check out a preview of it below. It’s a taut, punchy d&b track that deserves your attention, and if this is the tip of the spear on the album? I’m in for a good time.

A newly minted Gotham lawyer tipped me off to this kid. This is one of those “less than 100 likes” new to the game situations. The production choices are memorable, vintage & well selected, with the rhyming that smacks of competence. This is someone who has done his homework and knows the mark they’re trying to hit. The new wave led by Chance the Rapper, Childish Gambino & dope lyricists that aren’t beholden to the world of glam or gangsta is giving us some great new sounds. This is one of them. Steve James Makes Me Feel Bad About My Choice In High School Extracurricular Activities.
So, it’s officially not a fluke. I think I’m just going to start calling Keeno, Elephante, Just A Gent & Steve James Young Justice. There’s a competence that’s only going to get better with age here, and when I was 17, I thought I was a bad ass because I knew what Napster was. His most recent remix is a main room euphoric anthem remix of Wolf Gang’s “Lay Your Love Down.” Which, frankly, is a great direction. The decision to head into indie records is HUGE, for anyone out there reading this, DO THAT. Stop trying to remix Lorde or Radiohead, or Ellie Goulding, as someone named diplo or Calvin Harris has done it first and better. The branching into an indie track not only gives him a unique opportunity to drop banger shit on something that hasn’t had banger shit on it already. That technical description is a glib attempt to remind you that, really, after Kaskade’s remix of Young & Beautiful, a lot of people forgot what the original sounded like. Same with Armand Van Helden when he created the global remix by reworking Professional Widow by Tori Amos. To that end, it’s executed flawlessly. It goes to the right progressive places and doesn’t really dawdle about it. Check your man out on Soundcloud & Twitter and bomp as needed.
Rameses B Week Continues With Moonlight!
We’re over the hump! To celebrate, enjoy this classic Rameses B track from 2012. Moonlight was one of the first tunes I’d ever heard from him, it was one of those tunes that got me through a really bad place in 2012. You know those songs that find you in the darkness and remind you there’s still light in the universe? This is one of them. It makes you stop, listen, and remember. The crescendo build reaches a dizzying height at 3:44 and pulls you back into the crushingly beautiful chillstep that we’ve grown to love and expect from Rameses B. Midnight Music: MØ – Don’t Wanna Dance (Phazz Edition) [Melancholy Future Bass]
This reworking of some Lana Del Rey-style vocals out of MØ by Phazz is freaking great. This is the kind of indie + bass collaborative efforts that I think the ears of Americans should be hearing. The vocal modulations mesh with the lush, bassy soundscape perfectly. This tune has a lot to teach indie artists about arrangement & element usage. Choosing the dozen synthy effects in this track must have been difficult, but the decisions were spot in. Check out Phazz‘s stuff and the artist with the character I can’t type.
Thomas the Tank Engine & Kanye Mashup Is The Best Thing You’ve Heard All Week.
There’s not much to say about this besides the fact that I think this is the best use of “Bound 2” I’ve seen that doesn’t involve James Franco. I had no idea Thomas The Tank Engine’s theme goes FREAKING PERFECTLY with Kanye. Now I want to hear a series of Tank Engine melodies mashed up with Kanye, Lil Wayne, and vintage DMX. There is an entire world of crazy mashups on Soundcloud, some triumphant, others horrifying. This kind of goofy fun shit is why I love Soundcloud, and why I’m so sad that they’re clamping down, giving up the nest to Universal and generally becoming a pile of un-fun business people. If I wanted that out of a music service, I’d use iTunes. Just kidding, I’d never use iTunes.
Midnight Music: Fox Stevenson – Sweets [Sugary Progressive Beats]
I’ve been talking about Fox Stevenson since he ran by the name Stan SB, so seeing the maturation of his sound and his success warms my heart. Tonight, I bring you a delightful, upbeat tune he dropped last week that I’m just going to dub Sunkist EDM. This orange soda-flavored goodness is fun, popcorn dance that will get you grooving in your chair (or walking around if you’re reading this on your phone. Don’t read music blogs & drive!). The electro jam is a departure from his drum & bass bread and butter, but he can do whatever he likes at this point. When not only the headliners but the rising stars are able to jump genres with ease, it’s a good time to be alive.
Midnight Music: Eastside – Ellie (Loyal x Don’t) Coucheron Remix [Indietronica Mashup]
I’m coming at you with some officially under-the-radar shit. Coucheron, the Shia LeBoeuf of the people (I swear, that’s his Twitter description) picked up a gorgeous mashup cover of Chris Brown’s Loyal Ed Sheeran’s “Don’t.” This flip the script mashup came to me on a tip from This Song is Sick and I’ve gotta thank Nick for this, as it’s a MUST listen. Not only are the Eastside my new indie underground band to watch (they’re so new they’ve got 2 digits of twitter followers, so let’s help change that). This soothing vocalist reminds me of Daughter in the way that they take songs and bend them to their will. This track takes the original work and adds a soft, groovy chill vibe that I am digging hugely. With the rise in Tropical House, I think we’re going to be hearing a lot more of this kind of sound even when we’re not hearing a 4/4 dance beat. Coucheron is a great example of what’s possible when you don’t cling to the dance beat 3rd rail of EDM and we all benefit from it.
