The Locals Project: Local Techno, House and Trance DJs @ Santos Party House! (FREE PARTY!)

The_Locals_Facebook_Timeline_Banner (2)

Right as most of the burners start disappearing from the city to head out to that thing in Nevada, The Locals Project is putting together a great event featuring talent living & working right here in NYC. With House, Techno, Progressive & even a Trance DJ or two, The Locals focuses on making sure some of the fantastic talent living and working here in Gotham get the recognition they deserve. It’s so easy to just celebrate the headliners or those getting flown around all over the world playing to packed rooms of screaming fans, but when it comes to the dozens of regular/local parties here in NYC, there are definite DJs that stand out. Not only for working hard and making the events happen, but also opening/closing/assisting the headliners in making the party as awesome as possible. They’re also pushing out a petition to get Electric Zoo to showcase local talent, which totally deserves your attention and signature.

Check out the boatload of music that the DJs have pushed out to get you excited for this event. Seriously, it’s 6+ hours of homegrown beats & mixes, something in there for the whole family to love.  If you’re in town, head to the Santos Party House next Saturday and high-five some of your neighbors here in the Gotham Scene. Hit up the FB Event page here and tell yo friends!

Euphonik & Chris Sen Remix Candi Stanton To Create Gospel House

While the beat may sound familiar, the lyrics in this track are exceptional to me. I’ve been listening to house, funky house, Chicago house, deep house, gay house, straight house, disco house and the 50 billion other subgenres of house for years now. This is the first time I’ve heard Praise & Jesus-related words in a house track. I know there’s an extensive history of gospel influencing funk, soul, R&B and jazz, but the tracks have always sort of danced around the issue. Candi Stanton was a wildly important figure in Gospel & soul back in the 70’s, for everyone who isn’t playing the home game. I’m a big fan of this tune, made by Euphonik & Chris Sen in South Africa. I can’t even imagine what the dance scene in South Africa must be like. Parties must be freaking amazing. And if this track is any indication, the music is on point. Play this loud and see if anyone figures it out.

Just FYI, DJ Hodor’s Deep House & Electro Mixes Are Freaking Good.

So, it came out that the person who plays Hodor on Game of Thrones was also a DJ. “DJ Hodor,” or Kristian Nairn (as he’s referred to by people not being dicks about it) is actually pretty solid. The mixes he’s got up on his Soundcloud right now are definitely better than a lot of the upstarts out there. The first being a solid deep house mix that definitely keeps you moving, even when you feel you can’t go on. The second is a punch and energetic electro/progressive mix with some big room chops. It’s almost as if he can help power you through where you’re at and knows what you want, even if he can only answer in his own special way. Now that I’ve finished torturing this metaphor, check out the two mixes below and hit up his tweetery.

Flipping The Script: Girl In A Country Song by Maddie & Tae

In amazing news, country music has finally started to let its hair down. Maddie and Tae got my attention over the weekend with this jam of a tune that attacks the idiocy of “bro country.” While I can’t say I ever thought I’d be discussing country on this blog, there you have it. In the same way I wanted to give airtime to the female led punk group JENNCity, I think it’s important to signal boost artists that are fucking with the patriarchy in new & awesome ways. These two are doing so delightfully, as the video shows. I had no idea country had become so ridiculously bro’d out, but it seems it has, with a bunch of the classical instrumentation & focus on guitar skill fading in the face of lift kits, greased hair and misogyny. Amazingly, this hasn’t been embraced by all female artists, with Maggie Rose dropping a “love letter” to bro country. The World’s Largest Muslim Country Has A Metalhead President Now.

So, after a long, ridiculous election, Indonesia has elected Joko Widodo. While the name may sound like he’s a member of the Jedi Council, he’s actually a devout metalhead, and the new president of the country that has the largest Muslim population in the world. Mic.com has a great spread on the guy and his headbanging, moshing and being with the people. I find music love to be the great unifier, and in a nation that can swing very, VERY conservative, this is a sign that there is progress happening. He’s a fan of Metallica, Napalm Death, Led Zeppelin, and Muslim metal bands, which probably rock face. Whenever a head of state says “Rock is my passion,” I think it’s a good day for music. Rock out President Widodo!

DVS Has A Mixtape Out. Our World Just Got Significantly Better.

Moonsault opens the ridiculously fantastic joint with two of my favorite things. Classic wrestling and sick flow. This solo track really gets at why I’ve been tracking this kid ever since he was cooler than me in High School (Real Talk). To be clear, DVS has a larger vocabulary than you, and also rhymes faster than you. No seriously. I don’t know you, but he does.  Editgod has DVS bringing up the rear, getting support from Bill Ding & Laku. The murky deliciousness is proper “will scare the suburbs” hip hop.

Death Adders is an orgy of talent and hardness. DVS again shining brightly 60% into the tune. The bass addition at 4:24 is a STUPID GOOD choice. I cannot overstate how much I enjoyed that drop. Big Baby Gandhi both takes the award for best MC name and if they’re responsible for the beats, best usage of chip under legit rhymes I’ve ever heard.  56k uses the soundtrack to millennial social networking to allow a giant posse of heads to push lyrics out one after the other.

Rap Genius has the greatest description of any track I’ve ever heard when his Mixtape dropped on Noisey (yea that’s right, he’s on that VICE too). I’ll just put it here and move on to the next track:

I had just got a G-Pen the day this got done. I was all “prolly I should hit it like 500 times to make sure it works.” I spent most of the rest of the day blinking. But then this song happened also? Not extra sure how. But so, that’s a full day I feel like.

Oh My God with Majesty is a master class on modern rap. All y’all wanna be MC’s, take notes. Literally. Listen to this every day and write things that strike you about the track. Multiple times, while sober and otherwise. DVS & Majesty pick excellent tracks and DVS gets infinite props for rhyming Twilight. This is a banger if ever I’ve heard one. Black Swann comes out of nowhere with some aggressive beats, as Lakutis comes out swinging. This is definitely up there with Editgod on “oh snap, they might rob me” end of rap. This is something we don’t really hear much anymore, so props.

No Stoppin Us Now has some excellent production behind it. I love hip hop beats with vintage & classical chords while talented people make it happen. Glad to see DVS moving into the realm of production, can’t wait to see what comes next. True Blood brings back BBG & Lakutis for a shimmering cipher that I’m going to have to listen to about a dozen times to even make sure I heard everything right. Much Imagery, many words, wow.

Swann Gangg continues to showcase the good work Lakutis & DVS can do even without a Legion of Doom. Man, I totally forgot that Clarissa’s dad was an architect. “Fuck your favorite anything” is a profound verse, just saying. Daytona 900 rounds out the mixtape with every cool person you probably should’ve heard of by now. A 9 minute hip hop track is not to be fucked with. Put it into your face and smile, knowing that you’ve ingested some quality music from the streets. Yes, actual streets.

Tricksters From Ghana Are Better At Bicycle Than You.

While both of these songs are fantastic and deserve your attention, I wanted to bring your attention to the supporting cast in these videos. There is this crew in Ghana that apparently is better at bikes than pretty much every one of those trick videos you’ve ever seen. The two songs are proof that there is some amazing music coming out of the developing world, so put them into your face and be wowed by the talent.  (via Metafilter)
