Mix Of The Weekend: Porter Robinson’s Essential Mix [Smooth Vibes, Insane Feels]

Tracklist

Porter Robinson is having a stellar year, with this Essential Mix being a highlight. This two hour sonic voyage brings in the sensibilities of the music nerd with the inventive imagination of every crazy boy genius you’ve ever read about. The mix is lush, full, inventive and masterfully mixed. I approve of all uses of Chrome Sparks, the Clint Eastwood he drops is incredible, and there’s even a Kingdom Hearts shout out 28min in. The Flume remix of Lorde and about a dozen other great tracks are highlights. He’s got the time to really work with his sounds and it goes swimmingly. He also features a bunch of tracks off his hotly anticipated new album, so there’s another reason to put it into your face. Listen to this in the sun.

Earworm Of The Month: Alexander Popov – Elegia [Actual Trance]

I’ve listened to this daily for weeks. It figures into my commute at some point during the day. Sometimes to amp up, sometimes to recharge after the day, but unless a long set has my attention, this is THE track. I’ve been watching the rise of the new splinter factions in Trance (illustrated superbly by my boy Matt @ EDMTunes), and one of the guys who came out of nowhere is Alexander Popov. Amrada picked this kid up and he just spun at Sensation in Russia. There’s a punch to the bassline I’ve not heard in a while and the chords are classic trance perfection. The build is, even for a retail track, long and drawn into a gorgeous throbbing break with a transition that doesn’t include some obnoxious drop. That’s right, it’s not anthem trance, it’s just that deep, flowing Trance sound that you love. I love it, maybe you need to listen to it a few times to see where I’m coming from. Or possibly blast it while driving/exercising/riding dolphins. What’s that you say? You’d love a mix of this and a bunch of other Alexander Popov tracks so you can just dig into this trance sound? Check out below and thank me later.

Mix Of The Weekend: Sounds from the Brooklyn Underground 012 with Agent Orange!

Time to get out into the sun and enjoy the day. Agent Orange is coming at you with an hour of gorgeous, sophisticated techno for you to bomp while grilling or hiking or sitting on your ass with the AC blasting directly onto your sweaty, hungover body. You know, whichever. Agent Orange is one of the only people I know consistently pushing out new releases, mixes and compilations while living the Gotham life without getting a big head. Get at this guy and if you’re a producer, hire him. The Techno Master won’t disappoint you.

Playlist Of The Weekend: Best Music 2k14 Q1 by Jaya Prime

I’ve been listening to Jaya Prime for years, and if you don’t believe me, go listen to his Dreamstep mix. He’s thrown together an hour of tracks you won’t find anywhere else, and after listening to it, you’ll be mad about that. Inventive, cutting-edge production from Dirtwire, Nick Leon, FUME, Phutureprimitive, JacM, Bluereso, K.Sabroso & more. Seriously. This list isn’t for you weekend warriors, but if you want to hear where some of the sounds you’re hearing at clubs or festivals are going, check this out. And give Jaya Prime all the love, as this guy eats big room for breakfast.

Mix Of The Weekend: Keeno, Etherwood, Ash, Anile, Lung & Joe Syntax Kill It [Drum & Bass] (Free Download!)

Med School Music, sister label to Hospital Records, has tossed into the ring what I believe is the future of event marketing. Ahead of a May 23rd show they pushed out a 30min mix with the artists performing at the show picking their favorite D&B tracks and pushing it out as a free DL. The 30min is classic Med School, with tracks by Keeno & Unquote, Minotaur & others that you will definitely get down to. With so many mixers on this, it’s hard to pick a high point. So put it into your face. Also, party promoters, GET YOUR DJS TO DO THIS. This is the best way to hype a party I’ve ever seen. I’ll just be crying quietly that I didn’t live in the UK and missed another party with music like this, don’t mind me.

EP Of The Week: Voyager By Minnesota [Dream Bass] Free Download!

One of my first review gigs was Minnesota at Brooklyn Bowl (check it here if you like text), so I’ve been watching his ascent through the ranks of selectros for years now with much delight. Not only did he kill it opening up for Shpongle (When you’re awesome, you find yourself at Red Rocks Ampitheater in Colorado), but he’s obliterating Webster Hall with Koan Sound on May 23rd. The new EP is lush & gorgeous, like a forest made of bass. Voyager, Golden Era & Sail Away are personal favorites. They’re excellent examples of what can be done with a good understanding of what new bass music should sound like, especially when you’re trying to showcase a unique sound and ensure you don’t get pigeonholed into a genre. Put all 6 tracks in your face and hit up the comments with your favorite. It’s out & it’s Free on his Facebook page. Hit that up, because that’s a no-bullshit sextet of quality tracks into your face. What else do you want?

Mix Of The Weekend: When Did Collin McLoughlin Get Deep?

My people at EDMTunes have made a serious pick up when it comes to exclusive mixes. I don’t know who convinced Collin McLoughlin to go deep for his new mix, but the Gods sing their praises. This new direction from the dubstep remix maestro extraordinaire is astonishing. To not only switch gears, but to make it seem effortless is truly amazing. The mix convinces me we need to get the kid at a Verboten or Deep Space events ASAP. Someone call Reda Briki and get this kid at Sankeys please. Because if they don’t…I just might.

Frisson Alert: Porter Robinson – Sea Of Voices (Video by Justin Aberon ft. Charlie Chaplin)

Someone needs to give this kid (Justin Aberin) a video editing job. Like now. This stunning combination of exhaustively researched video clips and the close to perfect “Sea Of Voices” by Porter Robinson needs to get as wide of a viewership as possible. The juxtaposition of the most important speech ever given in the history of cinema (Yes, it is, sorry), the melody and the visuals provide a beautiful and heart-wrenching commentary on what it means to be human. These kinds of experiences remind us what it means to be human. It’s enough to give you a shiver down your spine (Hence the use of “Frisson” in the title) Push it into people’s faces, and get excited for Porter’s new album which should be here this Fall.  Also, freaking buy Justin Aberon a drink.

Mix Of The Weekend: Spring Kiss Mix by Tinker

One day, when you’re cool, you’ll discover an underground group that shares music just like they did back in the day. Or you’ll start your own. One of the members of this group shared a new mix with me, and I couldn’t be more pleased with it. I can’t find Future Bass or Beats in any coherent offering anywhere. The odd tune I find on Reddit or other places doesn’t suffice, so when Tinker dropped this, I couldn’t have been more happy. She reached 1000 soundcloud followers, so go hit her up and blow that number up as much as you’re able. No, seriously, there’s some visionary basswork going on here, so you can either be follower 1,015 or follower 1,000,015. Whichever you’d like. You’ve been warned.

Mix Of The Weekend: UKF Podcast #45 – Hybrid Minds

This weekend, I went digging for one of my favorite UKF podcasts from a bit earlier this year. Hybrid Minds is one of the best drum & bass groups you’ve probably never heard of. They put together some amazing tracks over the last couple of years, and I’m so glad that finally, they’re starting to get some exposure around the globe. To that end, check out this hour long mix they did for UKF, one of my favorite labels across the pond. Flipping between liquid, hard, and vocal drum & bass like they’re turning a dial on a radio (people still have radios right?), these guys deserve your attention. Hit em up & show some love on the Soundcloud, Facebook & Twitter if you agree.
