My boy Just Dan out of Illadelphia has put out a fun little mix for the summer sunset that you’re going to love. There’s a slow build from 110bpm to ~180, pulsing through genres and mixing effortlessly. There are a couple of transitions that are just stunningly good, exactly the technical skill I’ve grown to expect from Just Dan. The Prodigy, the bass, fidget and a bunch of breaky ridiculousness make for a wild ride that you will love. Great weekend jam, or perfect to pre-game your Saturday night shenanigans if you’ve not left for Burning Man.

Bonus Mix For The Summer Weekend: Nutritious At Cielo!
Coming at you to wind down the weekend, Nutritious brings in some of the deeper, rounder, groovier elements of the dance music spectrum for this delightful mix at his return to Cielo. The last time we saw our hero there, he delighted & blissed out the crowd. I assume this time was more of the same. From the sound of it, I’m not sure how it could be anything but. Wind down with this fun mix and make sure to show Nutritious & SpinSpinNYC some love.
Midnight Music: SomeKindaWonderful – Reverse (Steve James Remix) [Progressive House]
I’ve kept seeing this guy on my radar, and this latest track proves that the Force is strong with him. With the slow death of Big Room House finally upon us, the melodic, progressive end of the House spectrum is on the rise. The festival sets are already starting to reflect this trend, and I bet Animals has been played 1/20th of the times it was played by this time last Summer. The remix is slick with some excellent progressive & positive anthemic vibes. Monday is over, you made it, relax and gear up, the week’s gonna be awesome. Steve James is someone to watch, you heard it here first. He’s 16 but he’s going to do some great things, just you watch.
Midnight Music: The Common Linnets – Calm After The Storm (De Hofnar Bootleg) [Big Sky House]
Combining country and any genre of music is difficult, but I think this bootleg done by De Hofnar of The Common Linnets has done it. The addition of the smooth bass to the rifts and smooth vocals of The Linnets totally works. It’s super rare to see, but the beat never overpowers the vocals and it remains a very solidly country tune. I’d love to hear a whole set of country grooves like this. Now that would be an opener for Kygo like woah. Summer, big sky vibes.
Midnight Music: Raffael De Luca – Groove Radio Mix [Funky House]
Tonight, hit up this 30min of deep, groovy, funky & potent disco house mix from Raffael De Luca. If you don’t know him and you live in NYC, get over to Le Souk downtown and get an evening of grooves into your face. While it’s only 30min, there are remixes here I’ve never heard, in addition to seemless mixing and a serious level of awareness when it comes to the music that’s come before. It’s important to know your history and Raffael definitely does.
RIP Godfather of House, Frankie Knuckles.
If you don’t know by now, Frankie Knuckles has died. I’ll update this page as details come, but it was reported around 10:45 PM EST last night. I really can’t say anything other than, the Godfather of House is dead. The man who got the job to spin The Warehouse in Chicago, ground zero for house music, is no longer with us. Dead at 59, far, far too soon. I’m just going to post The Origins of House from Mixmag & his Boiler Room set, which occurred a few months ago.
The Origins Of House By Mixmag & The Bloody Beatroots
I love the Bloody Beatroots. Like, I really do, and he took some time make this with Mixmag. The story of House music in 8 minutes, featuring the people who made it happen. Gorgeously cut and edited, I’m super glad Mixmag is doing this. Can’t wait to see what they tackle next.
Ten Questions With Terry Gotham: DJ Dollpartz
1. If you were forced to spin a genre/genres of music other than the genres you spin now as Dollpartz & as one half of WoJ, what would it be? Both my solo and collaborative sound projects definitely engage a huge range of musical genres, so I’d just have to go with what I have yet to explore! I’m a huge hip-hop fan, and because that genre necessitates a certain technique of mixing, it would be a great new skill to master. I’m also a huge Reggae fan, and can see myself grooving behind the decks to a nice mix of Reggae and older dub and dubstep. Maybe you’ll hear a set like that from me in the future!
2. How does Dollpartz differ than your half of the Talon/Claw pair? What makes you one or the other? The real difference is in the sound that’s created when I DJ solo versus the sound that Tyler and I collaborate to bring to audiences and listeners. For example you’ll find a lot more soulful house lyrics in my solo work, simply because I love them but they don’t make sense for whiteowljaguar’s sound. When I dig for tracks for whiteowljaguar, I’m not only listening through my ears. I’m always conscious of what we’ve created in the past and take into consideration whether this track works with or grows off of those sounds. If the track really doesn’t fit with woj but I still love it, it goes into my Dollpartz folder. That’s not to say I don’t dig just for Dollpartz, or that some tracks don’t carry over between projects. Dollpartz has a playful, teasing, naughty, and hearful sound… at least, so far. Whiteowljaguar is more deep, dark, and dirty.
Midnight Music: CHVRCHES – The Mother We Share (Moon Boots Remix)
Tonight, I wanted to give you some peppy but chilled out deliciousness that you recognized, but was still new enough that it kept you guessing. This rework of the hit by CHVRCHES by Moon Boots is something I could only describe as “twee house” the first time I heard it. It’s a dancey but not high energy, and is definitely a sweet tune to play while kissing someone you’re crushing on. Or walking on the moon, you know, whichever.
Midnight Music: Espoir by Darius
I think there’s a lot to like about this track, and I didn’t want it to fly under the radar because a huge label isn’t behind it. There’s a smooth & sexy, disco funky cool feeling to the tune, so mellow out with it and get some sleep when you can. (via Music Is Our Weapon)
