I’m going to be talking about a lot more stuff like this, so get ready. The combination of lady vocal hip hop majesty, the perfectly mastered synths, the irregular but glorious beat & the signature squeaky toy sound fuse into some of the best Jersey Club and triumphant love/chilltrap that I’ve seen to date. I’m excited for the genre if it’s all going to sound like driving around Los Angeles in the late afternoon sun with a smart but foxy lady riding shotgun checking her smartphone as you go from party to party.

Midnight Music: Gorillaz – On Melancholy Hill (Indie Trip Hop)
So, if you read NME today, you heard that the Gorillaz singer & the guy who yelled “Wooo Hoo!” in Blur, Damon Albarn has enough material to make a new Gorillaz album. But he’s not. Because he hates kittens or something. On Melancholy Hill was one of my favorite tracks off the last album, so here it is for your Throwback Thursday, and Mr. Albarn better get to finishing those tracks so the Gorillaz fans worldwide don’t have to turn into an angry mob.
Midnight Music: ZHU – Paradise Awaits (Soulful Future Garage)
If you haven’t heard of ZHU, don’t feel bad, this one came out of absolutely nowhere. ZHU has released a few previous remixes anonymously and eventually revealed himself after a particularly sick Outkast cover that I tweeted about around my birthday. ZHU has a great handle on a dozen different genres and his mastery lends itself to a vibey, r&b-infused garage track that keeps chugging along but gives off the impression that it’s cool, it just doesn’t think it’s cool cause it’s spending all of its time being cool. Now that I gave you the least descriptive sentences in recent memory, hit up the track and go mob his soundcloud & twitter pages. (tip from JLeo of EDMTunes)
Midnight Music: Lee Haslam – Music Is The Drug (Old School Trance)
Tonight, we’re going back to the time when Formula 51 was a movie & Samuel L. Jackson still had both eyes. This absolute gem of a trance track comes from Lee Haslam, an institution in his own right. I think I discovered this track when I was actually in . The punch of the trance chords explodes like sonic fireworks after a particularly droll but delightful sample of Samuel L. Jackson discussing the best drug ever. The sample is hilarious in its reminder of how Hollywood doesn’t understand both rave & drug culture. This is true, classic trance in all its glory. Put this into your face then go listen to trapstep and tell me which one makes you want to dance (Note: Grinding does not count for these purposes, so no yelling at me about how Diplo is awesome).
Midnight Music: Yasmine Hamdan – Samar
Tonight, I’m bringing you the first Midnight Music track in a language other than English. Yasmine Hamdan has been getting a lot of attention with her album “Ya Nass,” with a First Listen on NPR. Check out the segment linked to get a sense of her work, and check out one of the other tracks from the album below. Her words may not be easily identified as, but the emotion is obvious. You’re going to hear a lot more of her here, I can guarantee that.
Midnight Music: Daughter – Medicine (Sound Remedy Remix)
MrSuicideSheep has continued to dominate the YouTube music space and last month he threw out a remix of the first song I pushed out as the very first Midnight Music post, so I am happy to bring you back to it. Medicine was a raw & intense piece done by Daughter, a singer I’ve written about here a few times. Sound Remedy has swooped in and produced a stunning remix of her wistful track, maintaining the melange of melancholy and musing. They add dollop of electro & synth on the top to give it some flair. Very different but just as good as the first Midnight Music.
Midnight Music: London Grammar – Darling Are You Gonna Leave Me (LCAW Remix) [Relaxed & Deep]
The mark of a potent artist is one that not only generates original work, but seeds remixes all over the world. London Grammar has been killing it in that department with remixes from Arty, Bonobo & a dozen more found in even the most casual search. Tonight, I bring you a chilled out, tribal drum featuring remix of “Darling Are You Gonna Leave Me.” LCAW slows it down and gives the melancholy vocals a halo effect that’s hard to forget. Wind down and remember, you made it to Friday. Check out LCAW & see London Grammar if you ever have the chance.
Midnight Music: Miike Snow – Silvia (Robotberget Remix)
This delightful, energetic & synthed out remix of Silvia by Miike Snow is a surprisingly quality issuance. The original’s vocals are knob-fiddled with to great effect by Robotberget. This is a track I first discovered a few years ago, but I keep coming back to it. The animation was a project done by Daniel Teeny on YouTube, which is wonderful as well. The introduction piano cues & strings showcase the nuance of the animation, and I’ve gotta say, if iTunes gave me 3d frequency graphs, I might consider using it. Enjoy these 8 minutes of potent vocal symphonic house in the 125bpm range.
Midnight Music: Ayah Marar: Keep Up (Produced By Metrik)
This Monday night, I’m coming at you with a recent tour video for Ayah Marar’s new single, ” Keep Me Up.” Ayah Marar was one of the first famous people to interact with me on twitter when I was starting out blogging, so I’ll always have a special place in my heart for her. She didn’t have to take the time to give me big ups from the UK, but she did. Her slick drum & bass meets rave production is off the charts and she brings a gorgeous edge to the usually ‘ard community.
The video has her flying from place to place, not in a jet, but just kind of grinding the gigs out. It takes a lot of bravery to be a lady and get shot as an artist without your makeup and putting it on camera, but she does it with effortlessness and goofy grace. Plus the song’s hot. So get at her. Metrik does great work on the production end, so it’s a match made in heaven. Ms. Marar is ever so occasionally in NYC, so don’t miss her when she is. Much love from Gotham. Hang tough y’all, Monday’s over.
Midnight Music: Nicolas Jaar & Sasha Spielberg Present Avalanche
Nicolas Jaar has teamed up with Sasha Spielberg to create a potent 7 minutes of ethereal but persistent re-workings of Avalanche. There’s a slow, plodding, but potent & organic feel to the track that blends with Daughter Spielberg’s soft vocals. This is an interesting & playful collaboration that’s good for pre-club drinks or a Sunday. Enjoy! (via FACT)
