Earworm of the Month: Daymanstep by Joman

So, I have to admit, I’ve not seen enough It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and this track has decided it for me. I’ll be putting this stuff into my face. If for no other reason that I can find more shit like this. Daymanstep is a brutal & hilarious dubstep remix of a clip from the “Dayman” episode of Always Sunny. The wobble is on point, the sample usage is perfect and the auto-tune for the vocal work could not be better. I cannot emphasize enough how pleased I was when I was introduced to this piece after someone posted this clip from the show:

One of my favorite people Ť¥gēŗ£ÏŁŸ, dropped this track on me, and I cannot thank her enough. It’s been on repeat, sometimes for way too long than I’m willing to disclose publicly. Get at the producer who made it, DJ Joman, because there’s some quality there and the non-Always Sunny-related tracks are quite entertaining as well. For the lazy among you, his ish is listed below. I know I’m like a thousand years late to the daymanstep party, but it’s new to me, probably new to you and fantastic.

Pharmacy – Phase 2 by Jonathan Allyn (Electronicnightlife.com Guest Review)

Pharmacy Phase 2 - Artwork

The fantastic lady editor/promoter that has been getting me some of my best event reviews dropped this in my lap and once again, she doesn’t disappoint. Jonathan Allyn definitely never showed up in my reality before because I couldn’t forget talent like this.

Mix of the Week – Jorn van Deynhoven’s April Mix (100th post!)

For my 100th post here at terrygotham.com, I am delighted to feature a mix by one of my very favorite new trance producers, Jorn van Deynhoven. And just like the name implies, the mix is thick with delicious, uplifting, euphoric and rambling trance that I could not be more happy about. Track after track brings back this trance feel that I thought I would never be able to experience live after Trance Energy in Amsterdam died a whimpering, electro-induced death and Sensation lost any loyalty to the original sound that made it famous. Particular highlights include the Manuel Le Saux remix of Any Given Moments & the Pure Mix of Solarstone’s Please. Also, his track “Superfly” is not only a favorite in A State of Trance, but an exceptionally well-produced track that gets me very excited to see what he does next. The track list is below as always. When you play it, make sure to play it on a system that has a subwoofer. Sit back, relax and enjoy the aural journey Jorn takes you through. Can’t wait to see him on this side of the pond.

01. Temple One – Venus [Enhanced]
02. Miroslav Vrlik – November (Suncatcher Remix) [Perceptive]
03. Ferrin & Morris – Arizona [Transistic]
04. Signum – Any Given Moments (Manuel Le Saux Remix) [ID]
05. Adam Seller – Titanium (Darren Porter Remix) [Fraction]
06. Talla 2XLC ft. Skye – Rise (Photographer Dub Remix) [Tetsuo]
07. Mark Sherry – My Love (Darren Porter Remix) [Liquid]
08. Rene Ablaze & Charles McThorn – Purple [Redux]
09. Jorn van Deynhoven – Superfly [A State Of Trance]
10. Solarstone – Please (Pure Mix) [Blackhole]

EP of the Week: Phutureprimitive “Searching for Beauty in the Darkest Places Pt. 1”

http://phutureprimitive.bandcamp.com/album/searching-for-beauty-in-the-darkest-places-pt-1

It is really hard to get away with essentially all of what Phutureprimitive does. Both psy & dubstep are things that can be done from well to vomit-inducing poorly. Released literally today, this first of a 2-part release that will eventually be a full CD is an exceptional example of how to do an array of things right. Not only is the psy-step fantastic, but the glitch and general bassy feel is accentuated by some fantastic vocals by Jillian Ann, Rain & Lila Rose. This specific choice of talent ensures that no facet of the 5-track salvo of awesome disappoints.

Party of the Month: Tech Noir by Digital Native

http://technoir.eventbrite.com/

After fitting a bite-sized version of Black Rock City into a raw space in Brooklyn, Digital Native is back with an event that I really could not be more excited for. The theme, the location, the talent and the eventual execution is a long time coming. I have no doubt it will be spectacular.

22 Tracks you Missed in March 2013

It’s that time again! As March has left us and we’re shining in the new April sun, here’s my backwards-looking monthly playlist once again. While there are a few neo-swing tracks on the set, there’s a chilled lady lyricist named SAMMUS, a bunch of great drum & bass by a kid named Keeno, an experimental piece by Andrew Rayel (probably the only non-trance track you’ll ever hear from him, as the other track by him on the set is MASSIVE trance from ASOT 600 in Miami) & a sweet guitar piece by newly formed rocky/VG’y group Chronicles of Sound. Additionally, another track by my underground favorite MitiS, a super heavy track (not to be played in big rooms) by Candyland, a meditative track by Exist Strategy and a fun little bollywood ditty by DJ Prashant Kakad, of the Jai Ho dance parties in Portland & Seattle. Oh, and Star Wars themed trap from LA, because, IT’S A TRAP!

Peep the tunes and of course, get at the artists if you like what they’re dropping 😀

Mix of the Week – New World Punx Debut @ A State of Trance 600

A State of Trance 600 NYC was a triumph. While I can’t wait to share my expanded thoughts about the event, the music, the crowd and the entire evening, I wanted to make sure that this specific set was noted. I’ve been a fan of Ferry Corsten for years, while Markus Schulz has started exploding in my awareness only a year or two ago. The collaboration history of Ferry is impressive and the New World Punx lineup was amazing. The tracks were hard, fast and insanely well mixed. The closest ID’ing of the tracks is below, and any track that you see as a New World Punx remix/mashup or bootleg mix, just go ahead and assume it’s fantastic.

Of course, track 20 “The Digital Punks of Gotham” is my favorite unreleased track of the set. How could you tell?

Mix of the Week – 8bitpeoples Sampler by TWD Industries

I, like many of my geeky Gotham cohort, can get down pretty hard to some chiptune. Whether it’s Blip Festival, the nerdier end of Baltimore DIY, the errant anime/comic convention I find myself at hitting their dance parties, or my own secret stash of chippy goodness that no one but me ever gets to hear, I’m a big fan of the bleeps and boops. This week, I was turned onto a really fun 8bit secret here in Gotham. TWD Industries was put into my face by two of the loveliest ladies I know so it was given the benefit of all the doubts. However, upon actual review, there was no need, as the work stands on its own quite well.

I do get annoyed with poor chiptune quickly, so it was very reassuring how quickly the mix picked up and kept me going with it. If you can drop both a compelling beat and enough ambient FX that I stay entertained you’ll keep my attention, but otherwise, I’m outtie in a big way. However, the mix rolls through a bunch of fun grooves in the first 4 minutes, solidly remaining chiptune throughout, but oscillating between heavy and light/airy bleeps & bloops.

The remix at 5:19 is amazing. A chip-tune remix of the “Ecstasy of Gold,” the theme to “The Good, The Bad & The Ugly.” Yes you heard me right. And it could not work more. Watching the mix evolve from there is a delightful pleasure and it’s a fun way to ride out a Saturday I wager. Get at it chip-peeps, you won’t regret it.

Earworm of the Month: Pink is Punk & Benny Benassi – Ghost (ft. Bright Lights) [Dyro Remix]

The song is hauntingly good if not a bit abusive when it comes to its treatment of subwoofers. First discovered on DJ Tiesto’s Club Life (don’t judge), this sweet remix from a youngling that goes by the name of Dyro, the track cannot be ignored. Dyro was recently featured on a list of up-and-coming DJs that are way too fucking young to be dropping beats this fucking phat. I can’t speak to Pink is Punk but if they’re working with Benny Benassi, the crowds must be satisfied. Yes, I’m going to walk away from that terrible pun and move back to the track at hand.

The video isn’t the official one for the remix/track, but the time-lapse photography works well enough, especially when lightning is involved. The tune starts off with some crushingly good vocal work and matches it with some ascendant synthy-bass. The build is quite nice and blasts into a big room house track that’s a bit less melodic than I’d like it to be, but I was too busy being blown around the room by my subwoofer to register my complaints. In case you’re interested in checking out any of the 3 peeps that had something to do with this sweet collab, hit up the links below. Also, turn the sub down a teensy bit before you crank it up 😀

Party of the Month: GlamTech by Disorient

Just in time to welcome the spring, DiSORIENT is busting out one of their signature events. You know it’s time for GlamTech when all of your friends start getting allergies and/or start planning out how they’re going to cover a tuxedo jacket with mirrors. Including the tails. Because, go big or go home. While DiSORIENT is known for its flair & general bon vivant affairs, this one brings out some really well done costumes & sets every year.

The Diamond is an interesting theme, one that does require a lot of work, a bunch on pressure and some heat to create. There shall probably be a liberal dose of blinky-shiny being invented by the many tinker/hackers that populate the event, and of course, art, video & 2 rooms of music. Because expecting anything less from DiSORIENT is essentially passe at this point. While I’ve sadly missed the event for the last two years in a row, the third time is certainly a charm. And, it seems my reward is a merry band of DJs that are going to rock le house.
