He’s been on my radar since his remix of No Time by Hayden James pushed itself into my universe back in April. This Flume-y vibe is massive, but airy. Just like Chet Faker & Flume before him, Tobiahs is bringing this velvety bounce feel to us with this Free Download. Frankly, this is a 16 year old kid who is going to blow up, so you better get in on the ground floor with this one. The 20min mix on his Soundcloud is dope as well, and totally worth your time. Midnight Music: Funkerman – Coming Home [Funky House]

Funkerman - Coming Home (Original Mix)This continues the good feelings for Midnight Music this week, with the V-man himself reminding me that funky house is far from dead. This track by Funkerman is already ancient in EDM blog time, but I wanted to make sure it got some love here, as he’s been blowing up quickly. And deservedly so, with the talent & foresight required to bring this track into the world. The funky house starts up and doesn’t quit, as the classic sample echoes through the track. It’s a glorious return to a sound I haven’t heard in too long. If 2015 brings back the world of funky deep house, I’d be a very happy man indeed. Ten Questions With Terry Gotham: Flexstyle

(So happy to be posting this! Flexstyle has been one of my favorite artists innovating in the dance music space for years now, and I’m honored he agreed to talk about his work & ridiculous new album, which I’ll be yammering about shortly.)

1. Tell us about your new album Perfect Getaway! What can your fans expect from the 15 track extravaganza? More than just 15 tracks, actually! There are 15 tracks officially on the digital album, but there are also a couple of bonus tracks included as well with some Oasis remix contest runners-up. Aside from that, this may be the most eclectic album I’ve ever released—certainly stays true to my name and mission of being flexible in the styles that I create! This album contains both original and remix work that I’ve completed over the last few years. It contains appearances by video game remix superstar and entertainer extraordinaire Ben Briggs, versatile EDM and VGM cohort Jamison Randall, my good friends Airdrift and dmGuillotine, and many more. In short, expect more of the same, but different! DnB, downtempo, trance, vocal synthpop, electro, progressive house, dubstep, trap, and breakbeats all make an appearance.

2. How did you join OCRemix and start doing VGM remixes? OverClocked ReMix is probably the main “home” I have as a musician, and I started participating over there in…I want to say about 2008? I got my first posted mix on the site in early 2010, I believe, after a couple of rejected mixes and a lot of participating in various competitions and events. That’s pretty much the best way to get posted over there, by the way, is to keep trying and keep participating in the community. I’ve always loved video game music, so it was only natural that I found the site and started participating. I think it was after seeing a writeup in a magazine that I actually first heard about it—might have been Computer Music or something like that. So, to properly answer your question, I don’t really remember exactly how it was I joined up, but it was definitely meant to be!

Midnight Music: Marilyn Manson – This Is The New Shit (REZZ Remix)

Marilyn Manson - This Is The New Shit (REZZ Remix)Welp, this blew me away. She’s 19, hails from Niagara Falls and has put out the best Marilyn Manson remix I’ve ever heard. Producers take note, if you want to do something harder than big room, this is how you approach it. There’s a smooth confidence to the bass & back-beat surrounding the original tune which is sorely needed if you’re covering this kind of treacherous ground. Her mastery of the source material makes me think she’s spent a lot of time with it, which I’ve gotta give respect for. The bass & remix smell very strongly of Nine Inch Nails & Trent’s more electronic moods, and it definitely needs to get show play & DJ support. This track makes me excited for what REZZ can do, she is on my watch list for 2015. Keep em coming girl. Also, get a gothy, industrial bass mix out there for me to rock out to at the gym. Midnight Music: Myrone – Kinda Epic ft. Azeem [80’s Electro/Anthem Synth]

MYRONE - KINDA EPICSweet Jam Alert! This slapping bass track is here just in time for self-tying shoes, hoverboards & the ridiculousness that was 80’s futurism. Azeem pushes out some amazing vocal work, with some retro synth guitar coming up behind like a soundtrack interlude in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure or Beverly Hills Cop. The high energy sound that seems to split the difference between electro & 80’s synth rock is fantastic, and I’ve gotta give it up to Myrone for it. It’s a great little interlude that will get your week off to an amazing start. (via FreshNewTracks)

 

Unearthed Carl Cox Mix At Twilo. For Serious.

Something like this doesn’t come back very often. My boy Agent Orange found this & it’s crazy good. This was recorded at one of the dopest places to exist in NYC. Twilo will never come again, and with the current legal infrastructure in NYC, there is very little any of us can do to change that. However, we can enjoy two hours of some of the best music spun on the island of Manhattan, ever. This mix spans easily a dozen subgenres, with some great gems that will bring you back. If you’re a geezer like me, this mix is going to bring you back to a simpler time. And if you’re a youngling, this is what music sounded like when people could still acquire MDMA in pill form. It was still cut with stuff, but that stuff was like, Stacker 2 & Dexatrim, not Methylone & Face Eating Salts.

Midnight Music: Grimecraft – Missing U [ChipBass]

Grimecraft - Missing UNew Grimecraft! For your Thursday night, I’m bringing you some retro future bass by the one and only. This tune has deep feels and a swaying bassline that deserves its own mix. This kind of lazy, but exceptionally produced bass rocks back and forth in a hammock under the VGM-inspired melody. It’s got the odd Pikachu sample, and I think I detected a “Hey, Listen!” in there somewhere, which, would be infuriating, if they weren’t used perfectly. It’s not in a hurry, and doesn’t pretend to be anything it isn’t. Kudos to Maltine Records for picking him up, and check out the rest of his EP here.

Faded (Zac Waters & Tommie Sunshine Remix)Oh man, Faded. If you have ears, you’ve heard the mysterious ZHU’s masterpiece, Faded, essentially everywhere. I heard a deep house remix at a party in Brooklyn, the same day I heard a more dance-friendly remix on the radio (KTU occasionally knows the score. Not often, but occasionally). However, I’ve gotta say, I like this one a lot. The depth of the electro stabs, combined with the ethereal synth work insulating the vocals works well. There’s a retro stabby electro bass thing going on which I’m all about, and you gotta wait for like 4/5 of the track to go by to get to the real meat. Because Tommie Sunshine makes you fucking work for it. Something I can respect. It’s a great Free DL and Zac Waters puts out a great offering here, with the help of one of the best in the business, Tommie Sunshine. A gem, and a zero dollar gem at that. Get at it, and bomp it before you go to PACHA. Or may be you listen to it before you go rock out to minimal techno at Resolute, whatever man, it’s cool.

 

Midnight Music: Azealia Banks – Chasing Time (Apocalypto & Mr. Fluff Remix) [Progressive]

Azealia Banks - Chasing Time (Apocalypto & Mr. Fluff Remix)This is the kind of pad work I love to hear in my prog-lectro. The piano chords echo throughout the playful remix of Azealia Banks, giving her soaring vocals wings made of euphoric major chord energy. This two-drop track is going to be a summer standard, especially if it gets picked up for Ultra like I’m expecting. The breaks, especially the one at 3:40, bring some powerful low-end without overpowering your senses or getting too bro’y. While the era of big room is over, the world of big melodic, or the return of progressive, heralded by many, is seemingly upon us. Kudos to Apocalypto & Mr. Fluff for doing some great work on this remix and can’t wait to hear what they’ve got up their sleeves for when the winter thaw finally comes.

Steve James Returns To Indie. Rejoice & Be Glad.

Smallpools - Karaoke (Steve James Remix)So, the progressive wonder Steve James has once again decided to go the Indie route and we are all the better for it. Pulling down a fun little tune called Karaoke by Smallpools, he puts his signature, yet evolving style on it. The infectious beat combines with some excellent re-working of the vocals to make this just as anthemic as we need right now in gray January. Apparently this tune was started in my city, so you know it’s got a bright future. I’m gonna keep saying it. This is what you’d expect to hear halfway between the indie & dance stages at Governor’s Ball. Like, if you stood in the exact right spot. The break at 3:40 is everything that post-big-room can be.
