Frisson Alert: Porter Robinson – Sea Of Voices (Video by Justin Aberon ft. Charlie Chaplin)

Someone needs to give this kid (Justin Aberin) a video editing job. Like now. This stunning combination of exhaustively researched video clips and the close to perfect “Sea Of Voices” by Porter Robinson needs to get as wide of a viewership as possible. The juxtaposition of the most important speech ever given in the history of cinema (Yes, it is, sorry), the melody and the visuals provide a beautiful and heart-wrenching commentary on what it means to be human. These kinds of experiences remind us what it means to be human. It’s enough to give you a shiver down your spine (Hence the use of “Frisson” in the title) Push it into people’s faces, and get excited for Porter’s new album which should be here this Fall.  Also, freaking buy Justin Aberon a drink.

Midnight Music: Kasbo – Reaching

And the time is finally upon us. Trap is going the way of Dubstep, and we’re beginning to see chilltrap producers popping up with the competence of the wave of chillstep DJs & Producers that came before them. This maturation of the genre is starting to be my favorite time in the life of any burgeoning class of dance music. First the genre gets big, then it slowly contracts while the amazing producers take the same elements that were cranked to 11 and work with them at a controlled level, producing some astonishing work after the “party” has ended. 40 seconds in definitely puts a spin on Trap in a way that I’d not heard since Minnesota was starting out. The summer vibes combined with an almost big room house feel make for an interesting tune from someone who isn’t even out of high school yet. Hit up the Soundcloud and show the Swedish 18yr old some love.

Mix Of The Weekend: Spring Kiss Mix by Tinker

One day, when you’re cool, you’ll discover an underground group that shares music just like they did back in the day. Or you’ll start your own. One of the members of this group shared a new mix with me, and I couldn’t be more pleased with it. I can’t find Future Bass or Beats in any coherent offering anywhere. The odd tune I find on Reddit or other places doesn’t suffice, so when Tinker dropped this, I couldn’t have been more happy. She reached 1000 soundcloud followers, so go hit her up and blow that number up as much as you’re able. No, seriously, there’s some visionary basswork going on here, so you can either be follower 1,015 or follower 1,000,015. Whichever you’d like. You’ve been warned.

The Spice Must Flow! And Also Be Available On Vinyl.

Modern Vinyl is reporting that the Dune soundtrack is going to be reissued for the first time since the mid-80’s. If you’re a fan of spandex, Sting & the spice, you may want to take note, because I severely doubt this is ever going to happen again. Grab it here just in case you can’t wait to pre-order it domestically.  (via Modern Vinyl)

Midnight Music: Kove – Way We Are ft. Melissa Steel [Drum & Bass!]

New Drum & Bass! Kove has been a bastion of occasional quality over the months, and I’m super pleased that new awesomeness has come out featuring stunning vocalist Melissa Steel. The tune is exactly what you want out of a vocal liquid track. Coming at you fast & hard, the tune doesn’t disappoint, while not taking any risks. The vocal work is perfectly matched with the lush & gliding drum and bass done by Kove. Kove has been on my radar for a while now, but they’ve definitely been upgraded to “put everything they come out with into my face. You should too. (via Stoney Roads)

And So It Begins. Alig Is In Brooklyn Vegan.

Yup, Alig On Instagram

In case you hadn’t heard, the Party Monster himself, Michael Alig has shown up on Instagram. There’s a lot of stupid associated with this, but for now, I’ll just remind everyone that dude totally killed a guy. Like, in cold blood, with a blunt object. Don’t go to “Party Monster” themed parties, and don’t patronize fake fabulousness. No matter how many “blood play” parties they’ve thrown. I’d provide hyperlinks, but I don’t want to provide traffic for this murderous asshat.

Midnight Music: Raffael De Luca – Groove Radio Mix [Funky House]

Tonight, hit up this 30min of deep, groovy, funky & potent disco house mix from Raffael De Luca. If you don’t know him and you live in NYC, get over to Le Souk downtown and get an evening of grooves into your face. While it’s only 30min, there are remixes here I’ve never heard, in addition to seemless mixing and a serious level of awareness when it comes to the music that’s come before. It’s important to know your history and Raffael definitely does.

The Skip

This is an astonishing article about the nature of the streaming industry and the way music listening has changed over the last 15 years. Music Machinery took the big data idea and shoved Spotify data into it. Your track has a 24% chance of being skipped within the first 5 seconds. Additionally, you’ve only got a 50% shot that your listener will actually make it to the end of the song.

This is what the new music landscape looks like y’all. Adapt or die.

skip At the time when I was coming of age musically, when we listened to music on LPs, the listening experience was very different than it is today. For one, if you didn’t like the currently playing song you had to get out of your chair, walk over to the turntable, carefully pick up the tone arm and advance the needle to the next track.  That was a lot of work to avoid three minutes of bad music. You really had to really dislike a song to make skipping it worth the effort. Today, with our fancy iPhones and our digital streaming music subscription services, skipping a song couldn’t be easier. Just tap a button and you are on to the next song.  The skip button is now a big part of the overall listening experience. Don’t like a song? Skip it. Never heard a song? Skip it. Just heard a song?…
