Holy crap this song. I totally forgot this existed until this classic trance post that showed up on my RSS feed. This classic trance JAM is proof of what we all used to listen to when you had to go to Virgin Records or Tower to listen to tracks off a CD from the UK or Holland that costs $19.99 for some reason. This is the era where we really had no idea what we were doing when it came to dance music videos. But then again, trance like this was seen as the real “anthem” end of the genre. So both ends of this seem crazy enough to mash together. While this reboot-looking video has enough stupid in it to explain my point, I want to note to all the younglings, this is what big room sounded like before proglectro & dubstep. And yes, it was silly as fuck. This was main-room Ministry of Sound ish. Granted, the bass was a little higher than on the wack YouTube rip, but you get my point. Be glad you live in the future. And don’t make me bust out the shitty acid house or happy hardcore to make my point. (via Stoney Roads)

E.A.S.Y. Comes Around Again With Coming Around Again.
The Dynamic Duo is back! E.A.S.Y. have returned (that title kinda kills it from an SEO perspective right?) with a new live remix. This time, they’re busting out all the stops and there’s a giant table of turntables, buttons, keys & knobs for them to use. They blow into good form and push into a point that I really needs to start being made about live production. Like, this kind of trick performance is stuff that we don’t see outside of the turntablism competition, but I think if we’re going to get out of the shallow end of the “EDM isn’t music” critique, we need to start adding some performance with the knob twisting. There are plenty of ways to make dance music a LIVE experience, and we’ve seen it from A-Trak, The Glitch Mob, Ratatat and plenty of others. Time to add E.A.S.Y. to the mix.
Phoebe Ryan Does The Best R. Kelly Ignition Cover Ever. Perfect For Valentine’s Day.
Wow. Can we get way more of this please? Just in case you needed some gender flipped fun in your Valentine’s Day, Phoebe Ryan has got you covered. I’ve been sitting on this for just this special occasion. This is easily be best thing that has ever come out of R. Kelly’s “Remix To Ignition” that scourge of frat room dance floors during the oughts. (zero’s? naughties?). The subtle infusion of “Do You Like Love?” is a potent uplift for the tune which she carries forth swimmingly. Kudos to Ms. Ryan, so check out her news single and go hug something. (via Stoney Roads)
MDMA, Molly & The Movie!
This afternoon with Ravelrie, NY DanceSafe & Stay Safe Seattle , I’m talking Molly, MDMA, the Love Drug, and all those wacky names Gen X’ers gave it back when you could still buy it at the bar. The name is short for 3, 4-methylenedixy-methamphetamine, so, yes, it’ll be referred to as MDMA. Not the pills you take, not the caps you got at a festival that one time, the actual drug. Because, as we’ve seen MDMA isn’t freaking pure. And when it’s pure, it’s incredibly strong. While pills used to be cut with filler, Stacker 2 or other fat burning over-the-counter faux stimulants (who remembers Dexatrim?!), now, the caps of “molly” or the baggies you see kids “dip” into at festivals have stuff that we can’t readily identify. This quote from the Miami PD explains the point better than I could.
“According to the Miami Police Department, methylone and mephedrone, along with another synthetic cathinone called 4-MEC, account for the vast bulk of the molly seized by narcotics cops in the area. A DEA spokesperson told me that in the first six months of 2013, the DEA’s Miami field office seized 106 consignments of molly, which contained 43 different substances, 19 of them so obscure even government chemists couldn’t identify them. So much for purity.” ~Playboy
To be clear, that means that not only are kids doing drugs that they can’t readily identify, they’re doing drugs chemists & VICE squads can’t readily identify. When dozens of new research chemicals come to light every year, the law can’t keep up. We’ve got MAPS doing as much as they can to get the word out, but they need help. So, to that end, the founder of DanceSafe would like to share with you his cinematic debut. This is going to be providing a fantastic history, overview and analysis of the drug, and the current effects it has on dance culture, its medical role in PTSD & harm reduction associated with it. Midnight Music: Senbeï – Raïn
SENBEÏ – RAIN from Victor Jardel on Vimeo.
Victor Jardel has created a masterpiece for a music video. Senbeï (woo copy/paste!) is a fascinating artist and this music video really brings out the best in what he’s created. Victor Jardel‘s creatures come to life and I kind of want to be able to 3D print them and put one on my desk in my office. The design is stupendously polished, with the gremlins blending effortlessly into the background in Paris. The retro-infused beat is broken delightfully, and really needs to get a lot more press. The tune straddles turntablism, electro soul, and an almost Japanesese neo-punk aesthetic at times. I know I just used aesthetic to describe a sound, but you’re also reading about something you can listen to & see, so don’t shoot the messenger 😀 It’s a tremendous effort by Senbeï and I’ve definitely put him on my radar. Kanye West debuts new song “Wolves” featuring Sia and Vic Mensa — listen
New Kanye. Love him or hate him, Sia & Vic Mensa have been pulled on, with Cashmere Cat producing. This is a live recording, hot from fashion week right here in NYC. Get at this, and drop your favorite flavor of haterade in the comments 😀
Taylor Swift + NIN = High School Forever.
Someone needs to tell Trent Reznor, because this is all kinds of wonderful. It throws that sour, black mood we had at one point or another in sharp relief. Ms. Swift does a brilliant job as a foil to The Perfect Drug from way back when. The punks & gen X’ers know what I’m talking about, but you’ve gotta admit, it looks kind of crazy now. We’ve come far since it was all the rage, and I wonder if Trent is mad or amused by this mashup. Someone find him and show this to him on their phone. You know you want to.
Midnight Music: Boxplot – Escape With The Clouds [Liquid Drum & Bass]
I really do have to give it up to Liquicity. They are one of the only places besides Hospital Records on the internet to get consistently dope beats of the liquid variety. I had no idea that there was a liquid DJ in Boston! This means I’m looking into booking things toute suite. This kind of track is exactly the sound that the scene needs. The cool intensity of the back beat rumbling along with the potent, but not abrasive low end is damn near perfect. The vocals put some sexy frosting on the top of the tune, and you’ve got a neat 6:41 of fun. BoxPlot you say?! I’m into it. I love the feeling when you find a new artist and have an entire new Soundcloud to go through. Is that the equivalent of binge Netflixing?
Sting & The Police Humor. Someone tell Ice Cube.
Midnight Music: Flunk – Lost Causes (Rashid Ajami Remix)
Rashid Ajami is one of these names I would never have come across without Stoney Roads. This mellow, melancholy re-work of Lost Causes by Flunk is fantastic, though it’s not exactly the most euphoric. The slow pace matches the soft, soulful vocals from Flunk, and the result is a song made of feels. This kind of stuff may not get festival main-stage play, but it’s a decidedly necessary part of the music spectrum. Especially in the world where many genres seem to have gone content-free while slapping a smiley face on stuff, Ajami is keeping it real. This is good for a gray day or a contemplative mood. Get at this London/NY based producer who is definitely coming up in 2015.
