Midnight Music: Mr. Big – To Be With You (Mark Chill Remix) [Retro Tropical]

Mark Chill is just in time for the Northern Hemisphere Spring. Is Tropical Trap a genre yet, because that ridiculous bed squeak sample shows up for a minute. There’s a lot of great parts to this track, and I could honestly use quite a bit more of that sing-along retro style of the remix. This kind of 80’s/90’s vibe is due in for a lot of festival moments especially with it being essentially vintage at this point. While tropical may have its clock ticking, this is something that may ride the wave out nicely down under. Let the Aussie summer never end!   (via Stoney Roads

Ten Questions With Terry Gotham: Match McKenzie

(Honored to keep bringing you underground hip hop fire. This time, I spoke to Match McKenzie, one of the lyricists in the trenches hustling every day to get his sound out.)1. With Iggy & the blingification era Puffy created, has hip hop lost its way? The thing about hip hop is that it all falls within the realm of expression of self and art. I think Iggy has some great songs but they have more of a pop accent to them in terms of appeal. I just wish the industry would’ve given her the respect to be judged in the Pop category for her work, because that too is a category full of award winners and amazing artists that have completed great feats. As for Hip hop, I’d like to think that it’s in great hands. Yeah, there’s a lot of foolishness going on out there, but at the same time there are still legends carrying on the craft, blessing the young and gifted, like myself, with knowledge, and there are some great artists such as J.Cole, Kendrick, Childish Gambino, Logic, Chance Da Rapper who are already established. I can go on for days, but basically the point is the message will find a way…we just have to keep them aware.

2. Who were you on when you were coming up? Anyone who helped your sound become what it is today? I came up off of a different mixture of hip hop, back when music was very different and the riddims were very distinct. Back then, you knew where the sound was coming from. I came up more on Alternative Metal, Ska and Hip Hop… I had so many influences it’s crazy. I had influences like Outkast, The Dungeon Family, The Roots, Kanye West, Depeche Mode, Chevelle, Smashing Pumpkins, I just remember only wanting to fuse a sound to bring something even more amazing to life. So many people have influenced me over the years, Tokyio Shrympz, Scamz and DrumNSkillz my producers; Loaded Lux; Face The Writer; Malayika Lemoine, ESQ; My Breden At The Unpopular; as well as every artist or producer I have ever met has influenced my sound in some sort of way. I feed off of creative energy, so everyone i come in contact with can add to that and influence me in some kind of way.3. What is hip hop like in NYC these days, with the rise of DJs & all of that? This is the Mecca of Hip Hop. It will always be competitive, but with so many Dj’s on the rise I’m sad to see that they don’t make it their job to find new artists and introduce the population to unique artists and their music. The sound of Hip Hop has undergone some big changes, and the DJ’s could really do a whole lot to introduce more people to more than just the same old thing. New York is such a great melting pot of cultured artist that I feel still embody that golden era charisma, with great delivery and substance. Dj’s have to be willing to give us a chance.

4. Forgive my ignorance, is there still a battle scene in the city anywhere? Do freestyle skills still matter in the game these days in NYC? Yeah there is.The Battle Scene is actually gaining even more popularity. I feel it’s necessary for you to know how to freestyle, just to be able to expell your thoughts in a pattern, if your working on your creative process or just to help your delivery, growth, or your mind hold no limitation in the thought process. A legend like Cassidy literally came out of retirement and collected a 100k plus check, freestyling. It can really hold some strong opportunities for ones that are really skilled.

5. Do you feel that hip hop artists have a responsibility to stand with the protesters in Ferguson/around the country, or is that something that you can’t touch at the moment because of the grind? I feel it’s our responsibility to keep our brothers and sisters aware of problems like this in our society, as well as other serious matters that continue to plague our communities. We should all be out there if we can afford to take time out to get a good look at the reality of what’s going on, even just for ourselves, because at the end of the day the goal is knowledge of self.

6. Do you feel MCs have a place in the EDM explosion we’re currently seeing? Or is it all about back to basics hip hop? Of course there is. We all have a place in music. Music isn’t as categorized as we make it, it deserves to get a chance to be innovated. There are so many things that can arise from that initial fusion. Hip hop itself has been evolving there have been so many sounds used and it can change in a matter of seconds. Each new fusion, each time someone tries something new and pushes those boundaries, it’s a great creative moment, and goes to what’s at the heart of music.

7. Any tips for up & comers or hustlers on the grind like yourself? Any studios or people in the biz help you out that you want to shout out? Believe In The Blessings You Have Been Bestowed, and “Nobody Cares, Work Harder” (that quote has kept me going everyday). This is the age where you can defy the label gate keepers, if your following is strong enough, they will be on your heels every step. Just keep building your foundation. There is a means of overcoming the machine, if you believe in your ability to keep the masses aware. With all the social media outlets it can happen. There will be days where doubt will try to creep up on you but if you can pull together a team the possibilities are endless. Keep networking. It’s the means of strengthening your rapport and even may open you to other ventures that fall under the umbrella of what you’re doing. I would like to thank BlackHart, The Unpopular, 173ENT, Tokyio Shrympz, LTI, City Official, Scamz OndaBeat, DrumNSkillz, Xyayx Studios, these people are all responsible for bettering me in some way as an artist , performer, and entertainer. They believed in my message. 8. How did you connect with Tokyio Shrympz for your new releases? Are you doing just one EP or are there going to be more? I actually have had a great rapport with Tokyio Shrympz for some time now, we have been working on a few projects for the past 3 years but I have known them for almost 9 or 10 years now. Miyagi Sport aka Mr.Calligraphy, Savage Hype, and Miami V.I.P crafted the production. This will be our first EP together entitled The Unpopular: The DRACONIS IGNIS COMPLEX. There will be many more projects to come. We’ve recorded quite a bit of material by now, so we have some songs to choose from. But first we’re going to make sure the masses are aware before we just jump into the next album. I really believe we made something that deserves to be heard, that holds great substance, so I’m looking to keep promoting once the EP finally drops.

9. Is there anyone in the game right now that is doing stuff that blows you away? Someone in your crew or across the country? There are tons of amazing artists that are doing great music that aren’t necessarily on the radar yet. There is a young lady by the name of Versailles The Great, She is something special to look out for. She is more in the Florida area. Personally, I like to hear music from all regions. There are great artists everywhere such as Face The Writer, who also is one of the writers at Circle House. He has crafted tons of hits for some of your favorite artist favorite artists. Also there’s my bredren dem, ESFX, who is a great artist and writer as well, who is actually working with B. Howard (son of Mickey Howard) on his debut EP. ESFX likes to take on the Hip Hop/Rock Live Band Fusion which is super dope and creative. And I can’t forget my LTI Large Tunez International label mates. They’re a vastly composed unit of artist that take on different genres of music as well. Really, there’s a lot of talent for the most part in New York coming out of the Bronx, but the Bronx doesn’t get much love due to so many of the industry types that feel that Harlem or Brooklyn may hold a deeper talent pool than the other boroughs. And then of course there’s the regulars that keep it consistent, such as the J.Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Big Sean and even the new breed like Childish Gambino, Vic Mensa, Chance The Rapper, Vic Mensa, Casey Veggies, I can keep going forever…

10. What is on your calendar for 2015 after the dope battle you rocked last winter? This year it’s all about bigger and better. On top of releasing my EP, I’m looking to do as many shows as possible to keep hustling and getting the word out that I’m here and I’m bringing a sound that people really need to hear. I’m trying to get around to CA, GA, and TX. I just got back from FL earlier this month. And of course I’ll keep performing around the Tri-State area. Plus, my team and I are in the process of putting together a set of college shows. I’ve also got my eyes set on some of the big festivals like SXSW, A3C, Indie Spring Jam, 5050 Music and Arts Festival and a few more industry mixers and showcases. Basically, I will keep going until the world is fully aware of my presence. Thank You for taking time out to press play and thank you to all my fans that keep me on repeat everyday. I love you all so much It will take hard work but the world will know soon.

Midnight Music: Saje – Take Care Of You [French Chill]

Saje - Take Care Of YouIf Tropical morphs into this I really couldn’t be more happy. My girl ravelrie tipped me off to this exceptionally chill track by Saje, a French artist of impressive skill. This is textbook lush. The guitar lines, shimmering chords & soulful vocals come together in a “sunset in the summer” kind of way. You remember summer right? That thing our parents talked about, where everything wasn’t covered in ice. Sorry, got distracted, back to the delightful Frech Chill. Not only is it fantastic, but he has original album art with his releases, which showcase dreamy work from Jacqueline Maldonado. So,  total package. Get into it and enjoy!

(Bonus: ANOTHER DOPE TRACK! This one a remix of a Chris Malinchak stunner.)

Attend: Vitamin B Presents About:Face

I don’t say this very often, but this event is truly important. Not only is it going to be a sweet party with some of the best breaks anywhere on the planet at this point. Not only is it going to be at The Paper Box, one of the last semi-retail venues in the area of Brooklyn it’s in. Not only is DanceSafe going to be there (so happy about this), but it’s to help one of my favorite people. Lexi, or as you know her, Illexxandra has been producing some of the most innovative & infectious dance beats Brooklyn has ever seen, and she needs our help. Because Vitamin B has actually created a community over the years, it’s coming together to support her in her time of need. For this reason, above all else, you should support this party. This is what community in dance culture looks like, and we need to lionize it as such. The music will of course be second to none.I won’t go on about Lexi anymore, so just put the bass in your face. Tim The Enchanter continues his global quest to get people to go “omg breaks are dope” that is shaping up quite nicely actually, as his recent work illustrates. There’s always been an accessibility to the genre when Tim gets behind the decks which I think other DJs could take notes from.Tektite is one of my favorite truly real people in Brooklyn. His taste in music, food & design are all second to none, as this perfect set of his illustrates.  Shisaa is a recent addition to the team but acquits herself quite nicely. This is some global bass that fits in perfectly with the rest of the Justice League.  I wanted to save this for last because it’s gigantic. Parametric’s 2.5hr Vitamin B set from their 6th Anniversary. As I said, this is a group that is a true member of the community. Get tickets here and drop by the DanceSafe booth when you get there. If you’d like to donate to her fund personally, show this link some love. This is what we’ve been fighting for ladies & gentlemen.

Midnight Music: Amy Steele – The Wolves (KOVEN. Remix)

Super glad I got tipped off to this by an old friend. I haven’t heard triumphant melodic dubstep like this in a while. While the chilltrap & chillstep movement has powered along, my awareness of that punchy dubstep sound has dropped off. This is a severe mistake which UKF has helped rectify. The growling bass &  echoing vocals are exactly what they need to be to make this vibe work in the unironic, almost triumphant way KOVEN. has been able to here. The duo have an awareness that I think deserves as much development as possible. The burbling dubstep shining against the vocals give me flashbacks to Marina & the Diamonds and Ms. Lily Allen. Get at these peeps.

Mix Of The Weekend: Above & Beyond – Ferry Corsten’s Guest Mix

Ferry Corsten - Above & Beyond Guest MixFerry is one of the greatest trance legends still innovating & still climbing. Up there with PVD, Tiesto (before the fall) & Armin, he’s been consistently generating dope trance since before I graduated from high school. This quick 30min mix he did for Above & Beyond is framing his latest EP, of which was my soundtrack for the month if you missed it. The mix is a refreshingly non-anthem trance set, with one unidentified track that I now can’t wait to identify. If it’s snowing where you are, hopefully this helps you warm up a bit.

IMG_1552In our monthly dialogue about festivals on twitter,  @staysafeseattle, @NYDanceSafe, @terrygotham, and I talk about festival safety, best practices, and how to generally stay comfortable.

This month, we have chosen to tackle the multi-day festival that spans many venues. You are probably most familiar with MMW/WMC (Miami Music Week / Winter Music Conference) which happens to be capped off by Ultra Music Festival each year at the end of March. You are probably also familiar with The BPM Festival, which happens in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, for 10 days, every January.

So, how exactly do you manage to stay hydrated, safe, get enough rest, and not experience FOMO (feat of missing out) during events like these? Here are my top 10 tips as a BPM vet for not burning out, and still maximizing your fun!

Multi-Day Festivals & Safety

2hxslecWhile there’s a whole lot of information out there about how to not die when the party lasts 4-8hrs, what the heck do you do when you want to go HAM over a weekend? Multi-day events are becoming the norm, as festival culture to continues to explode. To put this in context, there were over 800 festivals in North America, in 2013 alone. This stuff is the new normal, and they’re quite different from club nights.

IMG_1552My peeps ravelrie, NY DanceSafe & Stay Safe Seattle are going to focus on tips for the raver/festival attendee themselves, but I wanted to take this time to directly address fest producers & managers. I worked with the Electronic Music Alliance to develop this Event Safety guide for festival managers. There are a number of tips that most people haven’t thought of, but if ravers are aware of them, they can help mitigate the potential for a bad experience even when the festival is kind of a clusterfuck.

Some of the easiest take aways are:

  • Know where the water/crisis intervention/medical stations are before you have an emergency. This can literally make the difference between life & death.
  • Assume that the water stations will have heavy lines & no one will have extra ear plugs. Bring multiple pairs of those & more than one pair of sunglasses, especially for events with a heavy day component. There’s nothing worse than having your shades break on day one and squinting in 3 days worth of pictures.
  • Know the route from the stage(s) back to your tent in daylight & the dark without relying on too many landmarks. One of the biggest issues newbie Burning Man attendees have is the day after the Man burns, no one can find their way around because they were using “the man” as a guide post to locate themselves.
  • Start consuming gatorade & electrolytes after the 1st day. The water stations don’t take into account the fact that you’ve been sweating & pissing salts out for 24hrs, and the opposite of dehydration can kick on when you don’t have enough salts.
  • Pick up your garbage from your campsite gradually over the weekend, such that you don’t have a massive clean-up task when the event is over.
  • Have a plan to get there AND TO GET HOME. No one wants to be the guy who is hitching a ride away from the festival.

There’s a lot to talk about so join us at 4:30pm EST/1:30 PM PST for #FestFriday on Twitter!

Midnight Music: Vance Joy – Riptide (Kasbo Remix)

Vance Joy - Riptide (Kasbo Remix)Kasbo has been on my radar for a minute now. His almost sensual understanding of trap beats is on full effect here. This Riptide remix is one of the best out there . This seeming fusion between shimmering electro, chill trap & almost chiptunes give the remix an unmistakable edge. This is Kasbo at his best. Instead of trap being used to get girls to grind, or bros to fist bump, this takes us a journey that I frankly couldn’t have taken with the original. And it’s a Free Download, so we have nothing to complain about. This is great work from an artist you’re going to be hearing a lot more of in the future. But, you know that, because, why else would I be talking about them of course? Show him some love and bomp the rest of his ish too. The Sir Rock remix is dope as well. (via This Song Is Sick, great pick up by Mr. Guarino.)

Attend:More Fridays! – Hospitality ft. Nu:Tone, Metrik & Etherwood @ Slake!

I almost fell down when I heard this was happening. A real, live, actual Hospitality night here in NYC, and at a club that doesn’t make me cry. That’s right ladies & gentlemen, Slake is hosting three of my favorite Hospital Records DJs first Friday of March. The talent assembled here is simply stunning, but before I dive into the stupendousness that is the three of them, I wanted to shout out Slake for making this event happen. It seems they’re the one of the only clubs taking risks on talent these days, bringing in stuff other than craplectro, big room & VIP house. I hope they’re keeping the lights on with this, because it’s one of the things you hope make them the cash they need to stay open & keep doing it. But, onto what you’re still reading for:
This is a set of previews from Nu:Tone’s latest album, from Nov. 2014. It’s the drum & bass you used to write home about to your best girl while you were fighting in the struggle. The lightness that Nu:Tone is able to issue forth doesn’t sacrifice any of the dope jungle, liquid or soulful roots you need in a proper D&B album. This may seem like surface stuff, but put the whole album into your world, and you’ll find a surprising amount of depth and throwback themes & vibes to turn your head while you groove.
Metrik dropped an album about 5 months ago, but it contained one of my absolute favorite tracks of 2014, Make The Floor Burn. The album is rapturous joy, a sonic journey that most producers should spend a semester studying. The progressions, chords & bass are unmatched, except by other members of the Hospital Records stable. When London Elektricity says he’d take a bullet for the record, you know it’s not something to ignore.
Bringing up the rear is the irreplaceable Etherwood. Etherwood creates drum & bass that I can only describe as crushingly beautiful. I would go on about his attention to detail, deep understanding, or perfectionist production skills, but really, that would just be more time you spend reading this and not listening to his album preview. So, go listen to that. When you’re done, here’s some icing for your drum & bass cake.

DJ Dali is one my hometown favorites that ensures parties like this actually happen. He & Nicky Twist going B2B on some d&b will be a sight to behold, and my Konkrete alumni know what I’m talking about. Cameron Kush holds the record for the weirdest set I’ve heard at Slake that maintained a full dance floor, so I’m always interested in hearing what he’s got cooked up for us. Tickets can be purchased here & the event info is right here.

Update! Dali & Alex English have dropped another D&B mix to get you hype for Saturday night. Respect!
