Midnight Music: Just A Gent – Pure Imagination [Future Bass]

Just A Gent - Pure Imagination

Just A Gent – Pure Imagination

Just A Gent continues to blow me away. I am just going to expect every new remix & original track to be stupendous. He sits down at the piano and doesn’t get up until we’ve seen one of the best re-imaginings of Willy Wonka’s Pure Imagination (performed by Gene Wilder of course) since the film. The synth work at 50 sec rambles around in the sky and echoes through the rest of the track. A lovely fusion of sun-drenched vibe, piano and amazing future bass, this is an instant classic. I also bet you’ll get people who don’t like EDM that are really into it when they hear it. This is a great intro track for those leery friends who went to Governor’s Ball for Drake & Lana Del Ray but think deadmau5 is weird. Just A Gent is a gem that’s blossoming into one of the most exciting sounds in dance music.

Midnight Music: Vices & Jailo & BrassTracks & K.B. Starr – We Bout It

So, I’m kind of annoyed at my West Coast people. They didn’t tell me about Moving Castle, this stunning label that’s been making waves at SXSW this year. They just dropped their 4th compilation of future hotness and I wanted to bring you this highlight. This tune combines so many of my favorite things. We’ve got future bass, brass, syncopation, appropriate vocal work & quite a fun set of vibes. This is the kind of work I really like seeing from the EDM universe. The collab between the half dozen pieces of talent that honestly need to keep working together. Hit up the soundcloud page and show some love to these guys on Facebook & Instagram, because you’re going to be hearing way more from Moving Castle in the coming months.

Midnight Music: Nosaj Thing – Cold Stares ft. Chance The Rapper

This is future y’all. Chance The Rapper hooked up with Nosaj Thing to make something moody gorgeous. Is Proto Blues a genre? Chance leads the lilting & blues-infused bass work through with his usual flair for the excellent yet understated. “Smeagol to Gollum” is my favorite line for 2015. This kind of rhyming seems so much more free, almost like the way it sounded like a while ago. This taste of Nosaj’s (or is it Mr. Thing?) new album, dropping May 5, 2015 gives me a lot of hope for the stuff coming out this year. Hopefully he’ll come back to Web Hall & make a crazy night of it. (off Innovative Leisure / Timetable Records)

Mix Of The Weekend: Slow Magic’s Best Of 2014 [Future Bass/Chicago Footwork]

Slow Magic - 2014 Year End MixThis is a good one y’all, but it may be a bit too future for some of you. I promised I’d spend 2015 finding even less retail & more underground music than I have in the last year or so, so this is me taking a big chomp out of the new year. Slow Magic has been on that massive yet chilled tip for a while now, with his year end mix not disappointing. Dope shit from Yung Lean & Yung Gud, an almost baroque bass tune from Photay and some amazing work by Tielsie. This French footwork artist is blowing my spot up and I’ll be yammering about them later in the week. The mix finishes out with a premiere of a new DJ Clap remix, with the whole thing being a Free Download. So seriously, what else do you want to kick your January in the right direction?

Yung Lean – Yoshi City
Yung Gud – My Guns

Midnight Music: CAZZETTE – Blind Heart (Prince Fox Remix) [Future Wonderful]

CAZZETTE - Blind Heart (Prince Fox Remix)Incredible & bravo to Prince Fox. This track is exactly where I want Trap to go as a genre. Vintage guitars reimagined with synths, hardcore vocals and a massive but smooth droop make me want to pregame parties listening to Mega Man. This remix solidifies my “Prince Fox is on Festival lineups 2015” hypothesis. Gotta give it to This Song Is Sick for the huge premiere on this one. This is a break out tune and trap producers need to study the hell out of this one. A fresh sound, one that moves away from gimmicky beats and dumb drops. I’m a huge fan of this developing and will actively yell into the internet as often as I can to make this thing happen. One listen and you’ll agree with me.

EP Of The Weekend: Invention – Hallucinature EP [Chill Future Bliss]

From Future Bass Fridays, officially the best thing coming out of White Raver Rafting these days, this new EP by Invention. I’m such a huge fan of the Future Bass sound, especially as the massive anthem era of 2011-2014 dies a hilariously painful death. Bluffs brings in some chilled beats through that remind you of walking around in the rain while trying to find your way in the world. Tight, lush sounds that wash over you this EP needs your after-party or lounging attention. Equip & Moon Life keep the serene vibe going, each, moving in their own delightfully downtempo way. This is hammock music, or snuggling someone you like in a blanket after getting home from a ridiculous weekend. Sumarounds out the little joint with some jazzy cyberlounge, if that’s even a thing yet. The track reminds strongly of Ninja Tune, which is saying something, as my friends out there that know their downtempo can attest.

Midnight Music: Omar LinX – Dosey Doe (prod. by Pro Logic & Zeds Dead) [Hip Hop Bass]

Omar LinX – Dosey Doe (prod. by Pro Logic & Zeds Dead)We’re getting closer. This Song Is Sick tipped me off to the next level of hip hop & bass fusion. We’ve been making baby steps towards fusing the two exceptionally different genres since the late 90’s. While some of the attempts have been awful (I’m looking at you Tiesto & Three Six Mafia, don’t think we’ve forgotten), this is one of the better offerings I’ve heard this year. Omar Linx isn’t too fast, smart, and Pro Logic & Zeds Dead producing this allows for a powerful Future Hip Hop sound. The lyrical work keeps pace with the bass without ever getting too hard, too gangsta or crazy for the beat, and a good time is had by all.

Midnight Music: TastyTreat – Up Late ft. Father Dude [Future Bass/Chill Trap]

TastyTreat - Up late ft. Father Dude
This Hebinomichi compilation must be crazy, if this is what it sounds like. This stellar duo from Cali, TastyTreat collabs with Father Dude (a Gothamite) to push out a shimmering future bass track, steeped in chill trap elements. The playful chord progressions, stuttering bass and soulful call out vocals do a great job of solidifying the non-rave ground that some of the newer funky/indie tunes have been trying to capture. This is a new world and we’ve got R&B vocals hanging out with trap beats, running into some fun little irregular low end. Stuff people never thought of pushing together even a few years ago (hipsters I know, your favorite group was doing this in a basement in 2009, I know), and it’s slowly showing up in a selection of places around the globe. Can’t wait to see how this vibe injects itself into the Western Hemisphere festival scene, especially outside of Mad Decent parties. (via Stoney Roads)

Mix Of The Weekend: Spring Kiss Mix by Tinker

One day, when you’re cool, you’ll discover an underground group that shares music just like they did back in the day. Or you’ll start your own. One of the members of this group shared a new mix with me, and I couldn’t be more pleased with it. I can’t find Future Bass or Beats in any coherent offering anywhere. The odd tune I find on Reddit or other places doesn’t suffice, so when Tinker dropped this, I couldn’t have been more happy. She reached 1000 soundcloud followers, so go hit her up and blow that number up as much as you’re able. No, seriously, there’s some visionary basswork going on here, so you can either be follower 1,015 or follower 1,000,015. Whichever you’d like. You’ve been warned.
