Freak Kitchen’s New Music Video For “Freak of the Week” Is Epic.

In case you thought metal was dead, someone finally did the thing we’ve been waiting for since our Anime Music Video periods in college (Don’t play, you know what I’m talking about). This song is totally the triumphant metal some of us know and love. However it’s presented using some of the best animation I’ve ever seen for a music video. This smacks of Metalocalypse but in almost a Japanese anime kind of way. There’s a legendary feel that I really want to see as a cartoon. The singing, guitar work & power chords are all exactly what they need to be to make this song a success. The Freak of the Week idea is a great way to break into the genre and make a splash with a single. Hopefully these guys get some attention and you’re as entertained by this as I am.

Hometown Fire: The Adversary

Since this came on at the exact time I needed it during Gratitude, I’ve been meaning to update everyone on The Adversary. I first covered this sound almost a year ago, and he’s been fighting the good fight. The combination between live sounds & electronic elements is perfect for what people are looking for in Brooklyn these days, and the video is a whole lot of fire & attitude. The video work is well done and the bass is fun as hell to groove to. Ritual Dream is one of the tracks off a new EP that’s pretty quality, so I’ll be discussing my ambient thoughts about it below of course 😉

Surprisingly funky & rock filled, with a voice that needs to get more attention. The combination of strong driving chords & the sly lyrical work create a memorable sound that I’d probably expect at a bar where people cooler than me hung out.

Top Of The World pushes in a little deeper into the realm of Indie, but remains a stompy, soulful tune. The synth, reverb & delay are used appropriately here, and it gives me hope for how he’s progressing, as this is definitely more technically complicated than the EP he released last year. The vocal work is more daring, while the ideas are getting bigger and bigger. Kudos to this guy for dreaming big and swinging hard.

We Need makes me wistful thinking about a group called InnerPartySystem. The more artists that try to straddle this “live vocal + garage house bass” style, the happier I will be. This is what I assume my night will sound like if I ever have to chase a quirky exotic photographer through a crowded series of bars & parties. Or at least, what the cut montage of it would be of course.

Yoshimi is an interesting track that I’d mentioned before, but it’s quite nice. It’s essentially a Boten Anna that doesn’t suck (for anyone into Basshunter). There’s a streak of alternative vocals here with some fun anthemic guitar work that are totally welcome here. Check the thing out & hit him up if he’s in town. It’s a fun show, trust that if he earned a slot at Gratitude 2x in a row, he’s doing something right. The Adversary is performing at the Museum of Sex for their “Sex on Fifth Avenue” series on Nov. 1 at 11pm. Get tickets here since you’ve obviously been won over by this feature 😉

Happy Halloween Bushwick! Frapa Mata Wants To Say Hello!

My boy Mr. Timberwolf (Compton if you’ve earned it) collabed on this minor joint recently. It’s funny because, I wanted to give him a shout out, seeing him surrounded by other talent. Sometimes you can watch a video and see who the linchpin of the sound is, and in this case he is it. There’s an almost sizzurpy flow coming off of him and the irregular gait of the rhymes combine with the rest of the video to make it just creepy enough to be appropriate for October. It’s a great effort from these two, and while I’m not sure I want to hang out with the dude that keeps asking for a blunt (he seems like he’d be a liability at parties), Timberwolf is definitely someone I’m going to be keeping and eye on. All you hip hop heads out in Colonial Williamsburg (yes, I’m gonna keep calling Bushwick that, deal with it) need to get up on this. He’s got an album out there called Jazz & Thuggery Vol. 1 that’s a premonition of things to come. Ballad of Anubis has crazy flow, and HPSTR may need to be the anthem for Brooklyn for a little while.

The Evolution of Music As Told By Pentatonix

I’m a big fan of projects like this. I think it’s super important to know what people jammed out to a generation or 3 ago. We tend to have a stiff impression of people from the past, but I think it’s really cool to hear what the party or popular music was back then. Sometimes it’s inspiring, sometimes it’s wacky, and sometimes it’s damn applicable to the present day. Pentatonix takes us through an extensive & entertaining 4.5min of vocal glory. Some of your favorite songs come up, and I had no idea when some of these actually came out, because I don’t actually know things, I just use the Google goodly. Fun little video to help you run the workweek’s clock out, and if you need more of their acapella stylings, check out their YouTube channel here.

Midnight Music: Vicetone ft. Collin McLoughlin – Heartbeat (Rameses B Remix)

Any fan of this blog knows that I’m a huge fan of Rameses B. I think he’s one of the most talented producers out there. So, because I only blog because I like to nerd out about artists I like, and I REALLY LIKE Rameses B, I’m doing a whole week of posts featuring his music. That will include the fact that he crowd-funded a new level of gear and production equipment for himself, in a humble but effective campaign that was executed flawlessly. More on that later 😉

This is an older favorite that shows just how good of a remix artist Rameses B is. Vicetone picked up an amazing producer & vocalist by the name of Collin Mcloughlin and pushed out a quality original track. Rameses B breathes new, glittering life into it, adding his signature frisson (that shiver) inducing chillstep and sparklebass (is that a genre? can it be?). Someone needs to put this remix in front of Seven Lions, because now I really want to pay to see a Rameses B, Collin McLoughlin & Seven Lions show. Can this be a thing please? It would be the most euphoric dubstep show ever. There would be no serotonin anywhere else in the city. Ok, sorry, where was I. Yes, dope track, by Rameses B, because that dude is dope, and makes dope shit. See y’all Wednesday night with your next piece of Rameses B awesome!

Midnight Music: Fall Out Boy + Steve Aoki = Emo Pop Punk EDM Win.

A friend of mine turned me on to this track and I am so thankful. This is the type of crossover work I can respect, even though I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of either end of this collab. This heavy pop electro smacks of where a lot of that crowd that used to listen to Simple Plan or Sum 41 needs to be hearing these days. With Blink182 being essentially classic rock these days, the “fuck your ideology & aesthetic” streak within us needs to go somewhere. I’m a big fan of Fall Out Boy’s choices here, and the anthem break at 2:31 makes me really curious to see what a dance floor hearing this would do. I kind of want to see moshing ravers.

Let The Week of Rameses B Begin!

This week, I decided to celebrate one of my very favorite producers, Rameses B. This modern-day master of all things production & sonic. This tune was pushed out today, but I’m going to be spending some time going back through his discography, and posting my favorite tunes of his. This track is quintessential Rameses B. A lush soundscape, tugging on the heartstrings with soothing vocals, B knows exactly what he’s doing, and every sound in this tune is exactly where it needs to be. The broken beats that show up 50 seconds in, pull you into a delightful, minimal liquid drum & bass track. For everyone who doesn’t know, thems be my jams. Check this thing out, and make sure to show the guy some love on YouTube, Soundcloud, Facebook  & Twitter. If there is any indie, underground artist that deserves your support, it’s this guy.

And yes, check back tomorrow for my next Rameses B feature!

Someone Mashed UP Sia’s Chandelier with Star Wars. It’s Amazing.

Teddie Films thought about what would’ve happened after Captain Solo was frozen in carbonite, on the off chance Chewie took Han’s direction of “take care of Leia” a little too literally. The video is a fun, nerdy romp that will definitely put a smirk on your face. Especially after you see a random Asian dude trying to rock the Leia Cinnabon haircut. Can’t wait to see if the Leia/Chewie pair of costumes get some attention because of this. Happy Friday y’all! (Happy Saturday to Australia & Hong Kong, where it’s almost tomorrow already!)

E.A.S.Y. Blows Minds! Enferno & Shiftee Drop Crazy Live Mix Of Turn Down To Death!

From now on, any time someone wants to whine about DJs don’t make music and EDM isn’t “real” I’m just going to push this video into their face. ENFERNO & Shiftee are some of the best live performers I’ve ever seen. The reworking of “Turn Down To Death” (that SNL Digital Short lampooning Avicii & big room house from a few months ago) is exactly what I need to shut down the whole “it’s not real music” argument with extreme prejudice. The technical skill & perfect execution by the two of them is proof of what can be done by DJs that don’t just “press play” (to quote the illustrious deadmau5). This video is a must watch and make sure to check out ENFERNO & Shiftee’s other work.

Midnight Music: Eastside – Ellie (Loyal x Don’t) Coucheron Remix [Indietronica Mashup]

I’m coming at you with some officially under-the-radar shit. Coucheron, the Shia LeBoeuf of the people (I swear, that’s his Twitter description) picked up a gorgeous mashup cover of Chris Brown’s Loyal Ed Sheeran’s “Don’t.” This flip the script mashup came to me on a tip from This Song is Sick and I’ve gotta thank Nick for this, as it’s a MUST listen. Not only are the Eastside my new indie underground band to watch (they’re so new they’ve got 2 digits of twitter followers, so let’s help change that). This soothing vocalist reminds me of Daughter in the way that they take songs and bend them to their will. This track takes the original work and adds a soft, groovy chill vibe that I am digging hugely. With the rise in Tropical House, I think we’re going to be hearing a lot more of this kind of sound even when we’re not hearing a 4/4 dance beat. Coucheron is a great example of what’s possible when you don’t cling to the dance beat 3rd rail of EDM and we all benefit from it. Check out the original below and definitely hit up both the original artist & the remixer on this one. Quality all over the place.
