This is a weird one, but it’s kind of fun. While Spinning Records has had its share of brainless drops, the video for this one really makes it all acceptable. This entire video seems to have been shot at a Mortal Kombat Kosplay Konvention (that’s about as many K’s as you can have in a row). Instead of raging party people, or fucked up ravers, we’ve got…Sub Zero & Raiden. There is like 3.5 minutes of dance music silliness, with a whole lot of FATALITY! If you’re into big room jam stuff, you’ll enjoy this, but if you’re into nerds pretending to rip each other’s spines out of their bodies AND big room, get on it. (via Fresh New Tracks)
Midnight Music: Blackstreet – No Diggity (Figgy Remix) [Fidget/House]
Tonight, I’m utterly thrilled to bring you a No Diggity remix. Anyone who had ears in the 90’s remembers Blackstreet. 2:19 is one of the most delightful teases I’ve heard in months. This remix, picked up by EDMTunes, is a huge one, that not only throws back Blackstreet in a deep & respectful way, but it also does what music has stopped doing. It teases the listener. The simple extension & manipulation of the break is something you have to fight to hear in NYC these days. Absolutely wonderful remix, that harkens back to the late 90’s both in hip hop & house at the same time. Expect to hear this in some of the deeper, smoother & sexier house/tech house parties here in the city. At least, if DJs know what they’re sitting on here. This NYC local producer has done some great work here, so show some love.
Best “Every Breath You Take” Cover Ever.
So this dude Chase Holfelder is doing a series called “Major to Minor” where he transposes major/happy sounding songs into a minor/sad sounding key. This is a great exercise, but this most recent one really blew me away. This cover really brings out the inherent “creepy as fuck” aspect of the song. Which, if you’re any fan of music, you know is huuuuge. This is definitely an accomplishment, considering it looks like he did it with 2 people, 1 microphone and Pro Tools. At the end of the day, this needs to be in a soundtrack for a movie involving either a dystopian future or a jilted lover ASAP. (Via Laughing Squid)
Midnight Music: Crooked Colours – Capricious (PACES Remix) [Tropical Trap]
Is this what happens when tropical, trap & indie dance hang out? If so, I’m a fan. This track from Aussie artist Paces, is both bouncey & massive at the same time. The crooning coming in from Crooked Colours create a wistful, but energetic vibe. It’s effervescent enough that you’d be forgiven if you didn’t listen to the lyrics and missed out on the sadface topics entirely. The drop reminds us that trap can be massive without being abrasive. The steel drum remains throughout, anchoring the track in sunshine, even while the lyrics aren’t exactly positive. Great effort by PACES & can’t wait to see where they go next with this sound. My friends need to stop being awesome, cause all these Thursday night parties are killing me. InDeep has returned to NYC after the huge success of their debut event. Nora En Pure has been on the rise for a little while now and if you’re a fan of Indie Dance & Deep House, this is definitely going to be someone you need to catch. I’m always a fan of lady DJs that find their own unique sound away from what gets NERVO booked and all of that. She’s getting some backup from Alex English, a man who NYC would be noticeably less fun without. This night will be a definite surprise for the heads out in club land, so I hope you’re one of the people who gets to ask if you “were there” come Friday morning. Her latest podcast is fantastic, with superb track choices, flawless execution & really original transitions. Like, sometimes I want to hear a flute solo get me from one track to another in a deep house set.

Midnight Music: Bondax ft. Ayah Marar – Dust Funk [Funky House]
This is a match made in UK heaven. Bondax got my girl Ayah Marar to lead this new, sophisticated, funky sexy house track they’ve got out on their new Mix Album. While Ayah usually gets into some ravier, drum & bassier sounds, she’s still a Triple A vocalist that makes the back end Bondax comes through with wurk. For real girl, this is one of those “walk confidently in potent heels” kind of tracks that you associate with good looking people working/drinking/living in high rise buildings that have fancy floor to ceiling windows. It doesn’t get too crazy and the vocals stay where they need to stay, while an almost whipping around you like wind downtown. Dust Funk is a cool song that I hope to hear at cool parties. Save Tonight Remix! Eagle Eye Cherry Alert!
So, this is kind of amazing. I don’t know who was drinking what absinthe to get the idea to do this reworking, but Louis Vivet, Gavrielle & Nick Goldston have gotten me to do the impossible: want to listen to Eagle Eye Cherry. This crazy 90’s throwback is given a fun little bounce and some reimagined vocals. I know it’s kind of wacky, but I think this would kind of work especially in one of those currently awakening Australian festival sets. This kind of Spring/Summer vibe that Kygo exploits to a sublime degree makes the 1997 hit work. I’d love to hear what people think of it who have never heard the original, as that would be an entirely different experience. Do you think it works?
Mix Of The Week: Le-Saint-T – Mixtape Afterwork Electro Posé x Le Saint T x TEEMID
In the first 30 seconds, I knew this mix was special. This hour of sexy, deep house from Le-Saint-T the Electro Pose in France shows why you really can’t fuck with the French when it comes this kind of vibe. This mix is quality start to finish, and this Le-Saint-T is now officially on my radar. The mix keeps the pregaming energies up, and would provide a hot & alluring soundtrack to a hotel room micro party in case you’re into that sort of thing. The vibe coming from Timberlake, Thicke & Barkley remixes melds with a dash or two of tropical, a heavy dollop of deep & a whole lot of positivity. TEEMID is featured and does some fantastic work here. This is such a fantastic mix and the tracklist is below, in case you want to do what I did and go listen to each one of these separately after.

I Miss Classic deadmau5.
In case you missed it, deadmau5 mentioned someone who let a half-baked old school melody of his drip out onto YouTube. This is one of those tracks that made you fall in love with Joel. The ebb and flow of the synth is irrepressible. A track like this reminds us of what Strobe & I Remember used to do when they hit sets across North America. This is a reminder of an earlier time, one where Big Room wasn’t the unassailable behemoth it is, and Martin Garrix was still in…elementary school? Put this track in your face and let it bring you back to a less ADHD world, i.e. one where Joel isn’t stressed. It’s a great one, and one I’d love to see more often. (via EDMTunes)
Midnight Music: Fairchild – Stay Young (Midnight Mix)
I feel like tunes that sound like this wouldn’t have happened if music/band development didn’t happen exactly the way it did. This alt band from down under makes the best of so many influences. Rock, indie, lo-fi, EDM and a bunch of jam feels come together in a cinematic way. This really does make me hope there’s a One Tree Hill or Daria inspired network show that can pick up this mix to use at least a couple of times a season. The “triumph” vibe from it is strong, with the composition & synth chops to match. This is great work, with a great remix, Midnight, layering on top of it even more competence. (via Stoney Roads)
