Midnight Music: TheFatRat Returns! Unity Is Chippy Glitchy Gorgeous!

TheFatRat - Unity

One of my truly favorite rising star artists, TheFatRat has returned. I’d been lamenting the lack of an original release from this guy for way too long, and the waiting is finally over. There’s a scintillating competence in TheFatRat’s production that can’t be matched. The chip/glitch/electro has some serious spunk without getting too heavy or serrated. The track continues the irrepressible positivity of TheFatRat’s sound, which I could not support more. The vocals arrive when they need to, and they receive the same extravagant treatment as his beats. There’s a soul to TheFatRat that I can’t wait to see expand as people discover this MUST LISTEN track. (Artwork by jordangrimmer.deviantart.com)

Midnight Music: Flexstyle Drops 2 RaveCon Mixes Which Need To Be Heard!

Flexstyle, a little known OCRemix DJ/contributor, was let loose at Saboten Con a little bit ago, and we’re all better for it. Opening the live party mix with a PrototypeRaptor electrohouse banger, this guy immediately declared he was not fucking around. Mixing into a remix of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE level music ever, really could not win more points in my book. The Ben Briggs remix does the Flying Battery Zone (Sonic & Knuckles was a damn triumph) justice and then, there’s Bloody Beetroots! I don’t know where this kid came from, but this is the first time I’ve been convinced I wanted to go to a con in years. If the tunes sounded like this? I’d be 100% down. A particularly wonderful Green Day remix helps transition the mix into original music (but not without dropping a sweet Chemical Zone Remix, with a taunting DDR sample if I’m not mistaken) half of the mix. This is another area where Flexstyle shines. The tunes are expertly produced and pushed together. I can’t wait to hear when he starts integrating his trance & bass tracks into his live mix.

Bonus set! They let him back on the decks, which is a decision I couldn’t support more. I’m not sure how to describe this. This is Nerd Rave music. This is what I wished every chiptune show was ever. Frankly, I’d just listen to 4 hours of electro, deep house, trance & glitch remixes of video game music. If you want to play synthed out West Coast bootlegs of Sonic 3 music, I really would pay you money to do that. Is that possible? This mix even brings in electro swing, which is wonderful. I think this kind of stuff can bring a lot of introverts out of their shell. It’s easy to hear something you recognize and it’s complicated enough that it’s not doofy big room anthem shit. If Big Room is the frat in the EDM scene, this is the Anime club. And man, they look like they’re having a lot of fun.

Midnight Music: Tune Crew ft. Silver Medallion – Racecar Driver [Electro]

Tune In Crew has pushed out some surprisingly quality tunes as of late, so I wanted to take tonight and push some electro into your face. That’s right, not only is electro still around, it’s not even BroLectro these days either. This extended mix is exactly what you want from the EDM at shows. It’s got a a progressive edge to it, while maintaining a strong vocal lead. The use of male vocals continues to win all over the place, and whoever is writing their lyrics needs more work. Some of this stuff is just perfect. Check out a quote below:

You’re just a princess in Xanax land, with an uptown apartment & a master plan.
We make out on the rooftop, heartbreak and small talk, save all our change and feed it to the jukebox.

That’s some summer pop right there, infused with some potent backbeats and a 4 to the floor driving bassline that is slightly more bouncy than I thought it would be. This makes for a tune that needs buckets of support, especially in NYC/LA (via FreshNewTracks)

Just FYI, DJ Hodor’s Deep House & Electro Mixes Are Freaking Good.

So, it came out that the person who plays Hodor on Game of Thrones was also a DJ. “DJ Hodor,” or Kristian Nairn (as he’s referred to by people not being dicks about it) is actually pretty solid. The mixes he’s got up on his Soundcloud right now are definitely better than a lot of the upstarts out there. The first being a solid deep house mix that definitely keeps you moving, even when you feel you can’t go on. The second is a punch and energetic electro/progressive mix with some big room chops. It’s almost as if he can help power you through where you’re at and knows what you want, even if he can only answer in his own special way. Now that I’ve finished torturing this metaphor, check out the two mixes below and hit up his tweetery.

Midnight Music: Eclectic Method – Hodor [Hodor Electro]

Now that you’ve finished your weekly emotional manipulation at the hands of HBO & GRRM, I bring you something I can’t quite explain, or decide entirely whether I love or despise it. Eclectic Method does some amazing mashup work and has built a pretty dedicated following over the last few years. You can tell there’s a severe level of mastery when it comes to the sophistication of some of these tracks, and it seems this new one is taking the idea even further. A pumping, upbeat electro tune, made entirely from hodor-related samples. It’s one thing to make electro, it’s another thing to make electro just from “Hodor.” I’m not sure if this is more of a commentary on the genre or this guy’s insane mastery of the medium. What do you think?

Playlist Of The Weekend: Best Music 2k14 Q1 by Jaya Prime

I’ve been listening to Jaya Prime for years, and if you don’t believe me, go listen to his Dreamstep mix. He’s thrown together an hour of tracks you won’t find anywhere else, and after listening to it, you’ll be mad about that. Inventive, cutting-edge production from Dirtwire, Nick Leon, FUME, Phutureprimitive, JacM, Bluereso, K.Sabroso & more. Seriously. This list isn’t for you weekend warriors, but if you want to hear where some of the sounds you’re hearing at clubs or festivals are going, check this out. And give Jaya Prime all the love, as this guy eats big room for breakfast.

Midnight Music: Tiesto’s Uplifting Remix of Buffalo Bill By Moxie Raia

If you look up sugary anthem trance in the dictionary, right there under Robert Miles & Darude, you’d see some of Tiesto’s most successful work. The Club Life podcast has showcased his slow shift into the middle space between trance, house & electro, but this anthem gets into your head and doesn’t leave. It’s big room pixie stick progressive at its best. So if you’re fretting work tomorrow, or you had to work today, crank it and let this take you away for a few more minutes.

Midnight Music: GQMF ft. Sarah Jane – Never Gonna Let You Fall (On Bombeatz Music)

I think I’m going to start making a habit of posting intensely positive music on Monday nights. Because Mondays. Sarah Jane sings the hell out of it over some synthy, dreamy electrochip (sure, what the hell, that’s a genre-now). The use of the VG effects would seem an amateur move by most, but it works incredibly well with the tone and attitude of the song. Sarah Jane adds some fantastic, poppy, floaty vocal work with some fun lyrics that will get you to smile, even while you’re complaining the tune might be a bit sweeter than others.

Midnight Music: Audien’s Stellar Remix of “Treasure” By Bruno Mars

In celebration of the Sport Bowl that occurred today, I’m glad to say that Audien absolutely tears it up when it comes to remixing “Treasure,” one of the songs Bruno Mars performed this evening. The triumphant & heavy electro-house pushes the energy & strikes the perfectly right tone. Hit it up and hit up the comments with the first DJ you want to see perform at the Super Bowl.

If You Don't Know Who MrSuicideSheep Is, Change That. Today.

MrSuicideSheep is the best part of YouTube. One of the purely music-based channels, track after track shows up and it is always quality. Whether it’s electro, drum & bass, dubstep, ambient/chillout, experimental, indie rock and even progressive house, it’s good. The gorgeous art used in backgrounds adds to the presentation as well. Really cool person, with a great story & they deserve all the success. Mixes get added from time to time, like the chill-out one I’ve linked below. Glide into your Friday. And show that channel some love.
