Danny Stubbs ft. Issa - Voices In The Dark

I had to break up the Drum & Bass streak when I found this in my inbox. Scott Bond continues his hotstreak, pushing out a hard remix of Voices In The Dark, off of the REBOOTED label. This is my kind of trance, with Armin agreeing, dropping it on ASOT690.

The remix pack is delightful, with some quality work being done by Magnus. This smoother re-working of Danny Stubb’s fantastic original work got some love the next week on ASOT. This dreamier, softer, but still intense remix has a gorgeous build around 1:40, and it’s those types of chords I really think need to come back into trance. It’s a sound that flirts with psy, and will keep everyone on their feet.

The package, with the original & 4 remixes drops on Jan 19th, so rock it when it shows up on Beatport eh? It’s going to be a big one in trance sets for 2015, so don’t sleep on it. Especially these two remixes.

Midnight Music: Savant – 1997 [Trance] (Free Download!)

Savant - 1997Savant is exactly that. A musical font, issuing forth dozens of tracks over a relatively short period, we last visited his amazingness almost 1 year ago, when he killed the opening set for Astrix & Infected Mushroom. This track that I think he did as a joke, but it’s freaking incredible. Like, this is classic trance almost to a point. The 9min track has an ominous sample and a proper multi-minute build. With stabby synths that pluck at all the right heart strings, it seems as if he just stumbled upon a hit. To be frank, it’s one of the best vintage non-anthem trance tracks I’ve heard in years, and I don’t think he meant for it to be as dope as it as. Cause it is. Super dope. This needs as much exposure as possible, if for no reason other than hearing a Savant track on ASOT 😀 Tell your friends, and get down to the crazy hypnotic beat.

Midnight Music: Shogun – Skyfire [Trance]

For Throwback Thursday, we’re not going very far. If you listened to dance music in 2011, this track was in your head whether you liked it or not. I, loved it. This massive anthem was the perfect way to give your crowd a scintillating breather during a set, while building back into a trance drop of startling proportions. It was played everywhere, and I recently remembered the drop during one of Shogun‘s crazy sets that year, after it had been played by Armin & dozens of other DJs. That moment of “man, that is a crazy good progression” & frisson inducing chords, that was shared by thousands across the world.

As fans of Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk, Tiesto, Ferry Corsten and others can tell you, Trance has been around, but it’s been a while since it’s been at the forefront of the dance music consciousness. But how long has it been around for, and how did it get here? Broke On Holiday: Turkey Football Hate Family Weekend!

Ten Questions With Terry Gotham: Menno de Jong

1. Is Trance back now in 2014? Did it ever leave? No, it never left. People’s idea of what is popular changes with time but Trance has been around for 2 solid decades now. It may fluctuate between 140, tech, uplifting, prog and psy but it’s been one of the more consistent genres if you think about it, largely due to the very loyal fanbase!

2. Do you regret not being a label boss anymore? Intuition had some amazing gems on it. It was a golden era and a pleasure to work with guys like Jonas Steur and Airbase. Although I don’t own a label anymore I’ve been helping Black Hole Recordings out with the A&R for In Trance We Trust, where I’ve recently started to release my own music. All I can say is watch that space, some amazing artists are bringing their music to the label!

Mix Of The Weekend: The Massive Set Monoverse Dropped At Pacha.

Monoverse LIVE At Pacha, New York (11-08-14)I am delighted to bring you a fantastic local trance sensation Monoverse for this week’s mix. The driving after-hours trance set is definitely a standout after the night of epic sets that Pacha hosted last weekend. With tracks from arty, Bart Claessen, Ummet Ozcan, John O’Callaghan, Sander Van Doorn and Above & Beyond, this was a set that rewarded everyone who managed to hang around after Cosmic Gate blew the roof off of the mainstage. If you missed it, or you where somewhere else, here’s your chance to get back into it. Show Monoverse some love here & here as well, in thanks for the dope set. I’m a trancehead at heart, and when NYC locals are able to get that perfect sound, it’s a special treat.

Svenson & Gielen - Twisted (Jorn van Deynhoven Remake)

Twisted by Svenson & Gielen was one of THE Trance anthems of the 2001. Yes, people were listening to Trance in 2001. Jorn van Deynhoven pushed out this tremendous remake that made its way onto ASOT 688 last week. The track is a piece of trance history, given a significant boost on the low end for the new era. If you want to know what big room sounded like before Martin Garrix was in kindergarten, this is it. There’s a good 4 minutes reminding everyone what the classic trance vibe felt like, but with the Armin-developed huge bass sound that anthem/festival trance heads have come to expect. If you don’t know who Jorn Van Deynhoven is, get this musc into your face. It’s some of the best trance out there, and his career is exploding. Get with this before you can’t afford tickets to his shows.

(I think I squealed a little too loudly about how much I loved Scott Bond’s tracks & remixes because I’m super honored to present my interview with the Trance General, Scott Bond.)

1. What motivated you to start a new label called RΞBOOTΞD? Any specific experiences or feelings? Or just one too many big room tracks?
RΞBOOTΞD is about a return to the true, authentic nature of Trance music. I coined the name RΞBOOTΞD as I believe that it can best be defined as the act of starting over and rediscovery with the ultimate goal to surpass all perceived benchmarks or expectations. To me, authentic Trance music is very often mistaken for edm, house, big room, electro etc. and I want people to understand and appreciate that a distinction does clearly exist. Our releases will be positioned at the forefront of dance music culture and set clear, defined targets of where Trance, as a genre is at now and where it wants to be
Starting up a record label was a central part of the plan, it’s a brand for a track, a remix, an album, an event and a record label – but also a direction that we can all choose to follow. We demand consistently high standards by showcasing original artist material and content with a priority on total quality above quantity. So, in other words, we don’t want to release 1000’s of sub-standard tracks and ideally look to sign whatever packs and erupts the dance-floor with only one prerequisite, it has to be proper Trance music!

Midnight Music: New REBOOTED Release! Scott Bond & Marc Mitchell – Airfoil [Trance Rise Continues]!

I asked for it and it came! The next release from REBOOTED showed up today and I couldn’t be happier with it. The remix pack has 5 proper trance remixes of this Scott Bond/Marc Mitchell track named Airfoil. I can’t wait to hear one of these in a FSOE or a 138 set. Grab the 5pack at Beatport here!

The REBOOTED remix keeps the driving force of the label in the center ring. There’s some souring electric guitar-styled synths and a beat that is worthy of any trance DJ’s set, if they know how to handle it of course. This is a solid, punchy track with a very fulfilling break, one you have to wait like a proper trance head for.

The Simon Templar remix starts off with a bit more of a funky beat, but that pulls into some chilled vibes that bunch together into a playful remix that I’m a huge fan of. Simon Templar is just one of a half dozen artists I’ve discovered because of this label. Good on Scott Bond for this, that’s some amazing scouting. The Templar mix evokes classic Oakenfold feels that pulse through your mind playfully,  the whole thing clocking n at 9 minutes. This takes its time, like good trance should.

The Standerwick remix pulls us back into some more catchy, clubland beats that remind me of almost Voodoo & Serrano or Green Court. There’s a vintage feel that’s complimented by the solitary piano & vocal line, polished to a mirror shine. This is a track I can’t wait to hear Solarstone play live somewhere.

Just in time for Halloween, the Splattered Implant remix has a menacing, haunted twist to it. The beat is half psy-trance, half Blade 1, and I couldn’t be happier. The tune feels like it would be right at home on Planet Perfecto, but it’s here, betwixt 4 regular trance tracks, and this is the kind of forward thinking I’ve been waiting for. The tune explodes after a vocal sample that is totally unexpected and turns the track in a darker, vaguely psychedelic style.

Stephane Badey closes out the EP with a driving, hard trance rework of Airfoil. There’s a dollop of Infected Mushroom-style psy on this thing, but it packs Veracocha-style punch, so it’s not to be underestimated. It pulls back into pure vibes before building deliciously. This is definitely one of my favorite driving crescendos in years and leaves me angry I didn’t get more. A+ work all around once again, so grab it on Beatport and
