Mix of the Week: Change Will Come 2013 by MitiS

MitiS is absolutely killing it this year.

In addition to the Open Window & Born EPs that he’s dropped over the last three months, his popularity and technical skill have both been skyrocketing. I’ve featured some of his tracks over the last few months on my monthly playlists, but it’s been a while since he issued a full-length mix. And boy does he need to do so more often. At once it sounds like a better version of stuff you’ve heard everywhere else. Mixed better, less cheesy and altogether much more enjoyable, even though it’s a mashup of electro, house and some tasty wobble, a recipe lots of people try, but few succeed in.

Party of the Month: Playa Prom by Easy Village

Tickets are still available for Prom! http://easyvillage.ticketleap.com/prom/

With school out for the summer, it seems the natives have gotten restless and out of nowhere Bubbles & Bass has swung into action. With the help of a cast characters from all around the city, they’re dropping a super legit prom on a spot just south of Port Authority. The HK Lounge does well for itself, and the surroundings should work delightfully with the high class, crafty prom Kings & Queens that will fill the space to capacity on the 13th.

Earworm of the Month: Do You…(Cashmere Cat Remix) by Miguel

I’m really glad that we’re in the post-Skrillex era. There’s so much amazing music and scores of bedroom producers that are starting to produce some gorgeous stuff. We’ve finally started incorporating the ideas without the massive. Bringing elements of UK Garage, Breakbeat, Chill and the eternally reviled genre of Trap, the song crystallizes about 52 seconds in, and pulls into this wonderful melancholy. There’s this raw feeling here, an honesty that is communicated not only in the desperation of the vocal work but the tonality and the chords chosen for the harmonies.

There’s a massive breakdown that continues, much like people who are imagine when you hear the song. It’s got this “Requiem for a Dream in a bottle” feeling to it, that makes it so memorable and delightfully addictive. The comments dotting the track on soundcloud aren’t hype, it’s actually that good. When you hit 500k plays on one track on Soundcloud, you can start to celebrate, especially when it starts showing up in mixes all over the place (More on that later). But it’s more than that. There’s this central ability for this specific tune to affect you, resonate with you on an emotional level. And that’s why I can’t stop listening to it. Peep his Soundcloud and light it up. Because this cat needs to get white guy DJ famous.

Party of the Month: Party Cat – Main Event by Entwined & Blackbird

http://www.eventbrite.com/event/6670191723

One of the things that I never see enough of these days are tag-team sets. Lots of people do ridiculous sets, ostentatious work on the decks that gets the attention of the crowd, others do fun technical stuff like scratching, using 12 cdjs/turntables at the same time, and still more just press play and don’t do a damn thing. My favorite is when two people, friends or rivals, play back-to-back or tag-team. Two DJs doing some amazing work, watching each other’s backs and surprising each other with awesome tunes, sick transitions and surprises that you only get with two cooks in the kitchen. It seems the party Gods have heard my prayers, because next Friday, Entwined & Blackbird is coming together to throw one of the more creative events I’ve heard of in some time.

Old Masters, New Talent: World 1-2 Surprises & Rocks (Olde Timey Hedgehog Album Review)

(Coming at you with another guest review from Old Timey Hedgehog so get over there and take a look: http://www.amazon.com/Hedgy-Times-Issue-Magazine-ebook/dp/B00D47CEDM)

This month, I’m honored to be reviewing World 1-2, a compilation by Mohammed Taher of Koopa Soundworks, released through the GameChops label. I’m continually impressed by the enthusiasm, organization and discipline of the VGM Remix community. The combination of independent remixers and an impressive list of composers from the video game industry was a fantastic idea for this huge album, one that I hope is repeated often.

Album of the Month: Trance Essentials 2013, Volume 1

http://www.armadamusic.com/news/2013/04/trance-essentials-2013-vol-1/

Armada Music has been an institution for a decade now, bringing the best in trance, tech trance & progressive to the people. While keeping up with the 20+ hours of podcasts your favorite DJs put out each week can be exhausting, there are a number of tracks in these sets that always stand out. Armada took 50 of the best trance tracks from late last year, early this year and fired them off, ready to land in your lap and explode in an orgy of sparkle, vocals, chromatic chords, uplifting, massive & progressive bass. The first CD launches with huge tracks, with Nehalennia, The Spiritual Gateway, Kudawudashuda &  the MaRLo edit of “Perfectly” hitting your ears one after another. The Love Comes again remix, the Pure Mix edit of Seven Cities by Solarstone & the radio edit of Andrew Rayel’s Musa are gorgeous mixes of recent crowd favorites that have blown up dance floors from Dublin to Dubai & Sao Paulo to Shanghai. They keep the energy going along with a half a dozen tracks in between that you’ve probably not heard but probably should. Superfly by Jorn van Deynhoven is a spectacular hard trance track that pushes the party to a higher level, buy anyone that’s a fan of my writing can tell you that Jorn van Deynhoven can do no wrong in my eyes. The tune is one of 2 dozen that are exactly what trance needs to be right now. Anthemic, big room and explosive with the energy to push back against the forces of trouse and top 40 infused commercial chomp-back that true trance fanatics shake their heads at. New York City by Alex M.O.R.P.H. is of course a favorite and the mix that’s offered at the end of the CD is a great choice for just putting on and leaving on while you dance around in your underwear in your bedroom before hitting the town.

Party of the Month: Black & Light Ball: Enter The Golden Age

http://kostumekult.com/events/blb13/ An amazing party that starts with a Sunset…set from some stellar DJs in an amazing space. Get there early to ensure you don’t miss a second of the shenanigans.

As April showers turn into…May showers, the annual unholy alliance between Kostume Kult & DiSORIENT comes out of the gray rainy mists to dazzle the denizens of Gotham City. While DiSORIENT has pulled off amazing stuff documented around here previously, I’ve not mentioned Kostume Kult yet. They’re one of the best & most flamboyant crews in the NYC burner community. Even though the event is technically in June I’m going to be excited about it all month, so here’s the event not to miss in the next 4 weeks.

EP of the Week: “Gone, But Not Forgotten” by IniPhiles

(Another one of my reviews for Old Timey Hedgehog, which can be found in this brand spanking new iMag that you can get right here: http://www.amazon.com/Hedgy-Times-Issue-Magazine-ebook/dp/B00CLEMFTC/ Get at it, as it costs less than your cup of coffee. Or your Red Bull if you live in Manhattani interestingly.)

I’ve got a recently released chiptune phoenix for you this month. The eight track EP that was done to avenge the tragic fall of TWD Industries’ data cart has arrived. And you know, it’s pretty cool. While some chip-related producers are staying well within the borders of an increasingly crowded body of work, TWD Industries is consistently bored enough with it to go in some funky & inventive kinda ways. King Photon lends some support because obviously a 2 man party gets much farther into the dungeon than a solo adventurer.

22 Tracks You Missed in April 2013

https://soundcloud.com/terrygotham/sets/april-2013

As April showers turn to May flowers and the random weird people turning their A/Cs on way too early in the year, I’ve got 22 tracks that got put into my awareness over the last 30 days. A bunch of fun stuff as usual, with some ethereal but deep & meditative downtempo/chill stuff from LuQuS, Soular Order, Critical, Headphone Activist & Henry Saiz. ak9 drops a delightful track to round out the more calm side of things with “When You Come Home” which has become a fast favorite.

EP of the Week: Sierra Leone Remixes

Mt. Eden is one of my absolute favorite artists and almost 2 years after downloading & playing the hell out of their original tracks, they’re finally releasing some of their sick nasty goodness for purchase. Sierra Leone is a gorgeous track that was one of the first that proved that dubsteppy beats could be chilled and lovely in my mind. Saw these cats live at Webster Hall and they did not disappoint in the least. The remixes, from the likes of Araabmuzik and Tommie Sunshine do not disappoint. TaKu adds some fun garage’y beats to round out the EP. Tight, to the point and a great little reminder that Mt. Eden kills it. Can’t wait for their next NYC show.
