This kind of stuff would probably reduce aggravated assault rates if we played it on public transportation. If you’ve got a dope bass system engaged while listening to this, you’d appreciate that it’s as gentle of a stone massage as you can get from the genre. This isn’t done by accident, so appreciate how perfect his choices are. And don’t forget to give it up to Liquicity for giving Flite the stage he deserves.

Alert! The BROS Need Our Help.
This is really important. The Baltimore Rock Opera Society (yes, it’s real) is trying to go legit and make the ridiculously amazing art they make, as a real boy…I mean company. But essentially, what this means, is a bunch of insanely talented puppeteers, choreographers, performers & other miscellaneous artists have to become a coherent 501c3 and grow into the ridiculous orgy of creativity & authenticity that I know they can become. They’re doing really well, and when it comes to how this is related to my blog, I’ll tell you.
These guys are not only throwing out satire about partying, community and what it means to be a Bro, literally infusing it into their entire being/performance, but they’re doing it on their own. There’s no Diet Coke or VitaminWater sponsorship here yet, nor are they playing by the grace of the Koch Brothers. And it’s actually good! This is real art, made with blood, sweat, tears & pizza. Lots of pizza. So honestly, get into it. I’m picking up some pins myself at least. Because Charm City will always hold a piece of my heart. They’ve got 24hrs, so let’s really help. Tell your friends if you can’t drop loot.
Midnight Music: Tielman Brothers – Rollin Rock [Indonesian Rockabilly]
For #tbt, we’re going way back. I present to you the classic rockabilly sound of the Tielman Brothers. This is performance like you don’t see anyone on stage really attempt anymore. Granted, they had way fewer sounds to make back then, and you had to make them all sequentially without messing up. Like at 2:55, when the frontman plays his guitar behind his back, while standing on the bass…that is being played at the same time. Drum solos, bass solo while lying down, a whole lot of talent here. These guys are legends, trust me, go ask your parents. So put the oldest of school into your face, then get annoyed when a bunch of low-effort DJs can’t even get into their sets this weekend.
The Prodigy Keep It Going With The Day Is My Enemy & Wild Frontier.
Because I’m your favorite internet music celebrity, I’ve got not one, but two new Prodigy singles for you. Wild Frontier brings in a classic amen break driven breakbeat track that screams remix. I’d make one myself if I wasn’t too busy shaking my ass to it. The Prodigy are certainly no strangers to hyping a new release, but these are my favorite kind of bread-crumbs. The Day Is My Enemy has a perfect mix of vintage Prodigy sounds and modern production values. You can almost hear The Glitch Mob in their vocal sampling, which could an homage to the way new producers are pushing being angry with female vocals these days. The red fox returns for a feature spot on the official video for The Day Is My Enemy, but in a different style than their first single. The music remains massive and if you told me The Prodigy paid to work with a drumline from a marching band I’d believe you. The drum work is perfect, backing up the syrupy smooth vocals in a way only The Prodigy can.
Midnight Music: Mistabishi – From Memory (Matrix Remix) [Soulful Drum & Bass]
Mistabishi really can do great work when he puts his mind to it. This track from a while ago, really encapsulates what the genre of drum & bass can be. The Matrix remix of From Memory and the music video created for Hospital Records is equally good. Watching the creativity of a human drain away from them while they work their lives away have become one of the central stories of the Western world in the modern age. This video is no exception, and frankly, especially at this point, I think we need to be reminded to do it more. Especially when there are no guarantees of job security even if you play by all the rules. The idea that his mixer & system are in a box labeled “old stuff” and he’s still rocking an old CRT monitor really give the video a little bit more authentic resonance than you’d expect. The vibe here is almost hopeful, which is shocking for a UK release, I know.
The Crystal Method Mashed Up With Ice-T Is Kind Of Wonderful.
Got this from a friend and I’ve gotta say, I can’t wait to see what else she posts up for us. I am always a fan of people breaking out the classic dopeness for me, and she’s given us a delightful present. A vintage re-edit of The Crystal Method, using a 7″ of I’m Your Pusher, a 12″ copy of Busy Child & a whole bunch of Fender action. This getting pushed into a DJM909, with a whole lot of Jupiter 6 work. For anyone under the age of 35, all of those words and numbers probably made no sense. But suffice it to say, two different kinds of physical media and a closet full of hardware was needed to make this. I know, that doesn’t make any sense, since you could just bomp it all on a laptop now, but this was before laptops. When DJs who wanted to make beats had to walk 10 miles in the snow, up hill both ways to the record shop. This kind of breakbeat sound isn’t something you hear outside of Vitamin B here in NYC, but boy oh boy is it wonderful. Get at it and show Ms. Mancrack some love.
Midnight Music: Ibeyi – River
Hey now, new awesomeness. This twin-sister duo of French-Cuban ladies by the name of Ibeyi push out some of the best live production I’ve heard in a while. This is a fantastic combination of sounds, with a severe dose of feels. The vibe has a moody intensity that feels like what would happen if trip hop, a competent drum circle and some blues hung out. It doesn’t need to be in English to get the point across. This is a really fresh sound, even though it seems to have a vintage flare to it. I think there’s a lot that artists can do in this space, so I’ve gotta give it up to the Joy of Violent Movement blog for pushing this kind of stuff out. The post has a bunch more info on the artist, so if you’re into it, get into it.
Music I’ve Forgotten About: Jurgen Vries feat. CMC – The Opera Song (Brave New World)
Holy crap this song. I totally forgot this existed until this classic trance post that showed up on my RSS feed. This classic trance JAM is proof of what we all used to listen to when you had to go to Virgin Records or Tower to listen to tracks off a CD from the UK or Holland that costs $19.99 for some reason. This is the era where we really had no idea what we were doing when it came to dance music videos. But then again, trance like this was seen as the real “anthem” end of the genre. So both ends of this seem crazy enough to mash together. While this reboot-looking video has enough stupid in it to explain my point, I want to note to all the younglings, this is what big room sounded like before proglectro & dubstep. And yes, it was silly as fuck. This was main-room Ministry of Sound ish. Granted, the bass was a little higher than on the wack YouTube rip, but you get my point. Be glad you live in the future. And don’t make me bust out the shitty acid house or happy hardcore to make my point. (via Stoney Roads)
E.A.S.Y. Comes Around Again With Coming Around Again.
The Dynamic Duo is back! E.A.S.Y. have returned (that title kinda kills it from an SEO perspective right?) with a new live remix. This time, they’re busting out all the stops and there’s a giant table of turntables, buttons, keys & knobs for them to use. They blow into good form and push into a point that I really needs to start being made about live production. Like, this kind of trick performance is stuff that we don’t see outside of the turntablism competition, but I think if we’re going to get out of the shallow end of the “EDM isn’t music” critique, we need to start adding some performance with the knob twisting. There are plenty of ways to make dance music a LIVE experience, and we’ve seen it from A-Trak, The Glitch Mob, Ratatat and plenty of others. Time to add E.A.S.Y. to the mix.
Taylor Swift + NIN = High School Forever.
Someone needs to tell Trent Reznor, because this is all kinds of wonderful. It throws that sour, black mood we had at one point or another in sharp relief. Ms. Swift does a brilliant job as a foil to The Perfect Drug from way back when. The punks & gen X’ers know what I’m talking about, but you’ve gotta admit, it looks kind of crazy now. We’ve come far since it was all the rage, and I wonder if Trent is mad or amused by this mashup. Someone find him and show this to him on their phone. You know you want to.
