Haven is blowing me away. This track got picked up by Insight Music, this splendid little chillstep, downtempo, ambient, future garage & bass label out of the UK I follow. Their monthly compilations are a dreamy mix of up & coming underground artists always has something interesting. This one made me stop what I was doing and pay attention. The massive low end & heart-wrenching vocals scream for this to be played live on a significant system to give it the sternum-vibrating live experience we all know it can deliver. I really want to hear more from this guy. Haven is from Stockholm, which is apparently where Dream Bass is made of. This is a cloud of emotion being vibrated by a subwoofer. It understands you, doesn’t judge, and may cry with you if you start. This is a track I want to make a music video or a party concept around. See someone walk through a crazy, dreamy party experience with this in the background, or a chill space with this kind of aural & visual aesthetic. What do you say? Would you come? Apparently he works in NYC, so I kind of want to hire them to spin an afterparty now.

People travel the globe for a good house breakdown. The Armand Van Helden remix of Tori Amos was the first one of these pop reworkings, but every major pop, indie, alt & vocal heavy track worth its salt has been remixed by some of the most talented producers out there. Some hit the mark, some pratfall really hard, as you find out from that one weird guy who keeps sending you YouTube links. I found Imogen Heap’s remix offerings to be kind of lacking in general. There was a gorgeous simplicity to the original that most producers really couldn’t stay true to, plus it’s really embarassing when your vocalist has better production values than you do. However, JPOD’s remix won me over almost immediately. The funky breakdowns mesh with the synthy vocals & inspire thoughts of dancing to it at a trendy, tiny bar on Rivington somewhere. This is one for the Manhattan & Brooklyn nights if I’ve ever heard one. Dub Scout is a transcendently talented & hard working producer you probably haven’t heard of yet. He’s one of the most creative innovators in the electronic space right now, and yet, he doesn’t just kill it on the beats. This crushingly beautiful acoustic cover of The Spiritual by Jukebox The Ghost made me sit up in my chair. This is the singer/songwriter cover that I’ve been looking for. People ask whether I listen to acoustic music, and when it sounds like this, the answer is absolutely.  If you’re a fan of a voice , a melody, harmony and a beat, you’ll be right at home here. Take a couple of minutes and enjoy.

Earworm Of The Month: Tielsie – Hueboy (DJ Clap Remix) [Chip Footwork]

Tielsie - Hueboy (DJ Clap Remix)Music that makes me sit up in my chair, music that’s different than anything I’ve heard before, that’s what I’m here for. Tielsie does some amazing work in what I can only describe as the future footwork space. This kind of stuff isn’t for the faint of heart, but it’s some of the most inventive post-hardcore sounds I’ve heard in a long time. DJ Clap (aka John Luke) adds his own signature chipcore sound to a tune from Tielsie called Hueboy. It starts off soothing, but then ramps up in energy to the point where it’s essentially vibrating. 1:40 to 2:11 is the future footwork that is unmatched by any. However, 2:11 exceeds even that, giving me the sonic equivalent of running inside of a Mega Man X cartridge. This is so frenetic it’s almost downright soothing. When things got too crazy or frenetic over the past month, I’ve thrown this into my face & drifted away. Everything else melts away. Steel yourself for June!

Major Lazer x DJ Snake ft. MO - Lean On (Kamil Remix)Kamil from Azerbaijan continues to earn my respect from thousands of miles away. His jovial, hopeful outlook has given him success in remixing a lot of tracks where others fail. I’m now going to specifically wait for Kamil remixes when new dope anthems get dropped, because I know that there’s going to be some fun, funky remix coming. Something not too serious, that wears colors other than black & you can dance to. This is a strong competitor for the best DJ Snake mix I’ve ever heard, so if diplo, Major Lazer, DJ Snake or Mo want to discover this guy and get him on a Mad Decent tour that would be excellent. Get at the rest of his tracks, especially the stupendous Disclosure remix.   

Midnight Music: Jaymes Young & Phoebe Ryan – We Won’t [Vocal Indie]

Jaymes Young is the He Man to Phoebe Ryan’s She-Ra in the Eternia that is Indie Soundcloud. Now that we’ve put that exceptionally tortured metaphor behind us, this track is exquisite. Phoebe Ryan joins Jaymes for one of the best duets since that summer we were all singing about “now you’re just somebody that I used to know.” This skill when it comes to lyrical genius and tonal perfection from both singers is second to none, and I really do believe both of these artist need solo pop careers. Each has been featured on this site before, Jaymes earning an Earworm of the Month tip, with Phoebe being my Valentine’s Day release. The mastering is second to none as usual, so I really hope this goes le viral.

TACHES - Prints Of Whales (ft. PB Kaya)I don’t post a lot of Deep House on this blog. It’s not because I dislike the genre, as you’ll see me at deep & tech house parties pretty much weekly in Gotham. When it comes to house, I prefer sets & I don’t much keep up with individual tracks. I had to make an exception when I came across this. TÂCHES creates a soothing, spacey house track that needs to be purchased by every DJ friend of mine in the city. The deep, modern vibe is exactly what I needed to keep chugging through this week and if you need a pick me up, I know this will help.  If I don’t hear this at least once in the next month at Verboten, I’m going to be seriously disappointed. Midnight Music: The Chainsmokers – Let You Go (Thero Remix) [Tropical]

While good Tropical is getting few & far between, I am really digging this remix by Thero. The Chainsmokers have had the Midas touch for a while now. No matter how much you pretend to dislike Selfie, they’re everywhere, and definitely deserve it. Thero takes their latest hotness and re-envisions it as an airy, future chill track that I like more each time I listen to it. There’s a whole lot of reverb put to good use here, making the track a bit harder than most tropical tunes. This is a huge step in the right direction for a genre that seemed to be spinning its wheels a bit. The heavier throb & beat structure give the track some oomph that gives it more versatility & range. I hope he’s entering it into The Chainsmokers remix contest on Beatport, cause this kind of dope shit just might win.

Midnight Music: Nightcall – Reverie [Euphoric Synth Metal]

Nightcall - ReverieNightcall is one of the few moody, dark triumphant groups that get an instant listen whenever they put out new work. Their explosion 2min in is one of mastery and could best be described as “viking metal without guitars.” There’s a powerful dark future sound here, while staying true to the fundamentals of a genre of music that ISN’T DANCE MUSIC. This is straight up some progressive metal that is being made with a keyboard, or some crazy synth work. If this is coming out of a laptop, which, is likely at this point, I think we’ve seen the tip fellas. Like, this means that all genres are on the take when it comes to this, as my longstanding love of indietronica helps to reinforce. If you can take the best of what’s coming out of laptop production & throw it into some pre-existing musicality/vibe/whatever, bang. And we’re all better for it. This is the kind of work that needs to be happening across genres to really find the sweet spot that bands need to sound unique in an ever increasingly crowded marketplace.

Rudimental - Never Let You GoRudimental is back and all is right with the world. The soulful, triumphant feel that the world fell in love with is back. The rollicking good time that hits up 45sec in is the signature sound that if they keep making, I’ll keep hyping. To know what the potential of this music is and not see it in wider American release kills me. This is the sound of a generation and we’re all better off for them being so good & well received we’re getting a 2nd album. If you’re like me, that album is already getting you hyped. The full album should be out this summer and if it’s anything like Home, we’re in for a treat. Live drum work, great vocals, throbbing bass & quality production, what more could you ask for in your drum & bass? Oh right, live trumpet! Because Rudimental does that 😀
